Book excerpt: Bear Rock No. 2 Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 760 feet long with a maximum height of about 42 feet from the downstream toe and a crest width of about 6 feet. The crest and upstream and downstream faces of the dam are covered with riprap. The flood discharge facilities of the dam consist of a 33-ft. rectangular stone masonry overflow spillway located on the left abutment (looking downstream). The spillway is 33 feet wide and about 4 feet deep at the control section and uniformly converges into the spillway discharge channel. The spillway discharge channel is a stone masonry chute, which terminates at a plunge pool. A dike along the right side of the spillway discharge channel is provided to prevent flow towards the toe of the dam. The outlet facilities consist of a 16-inch cast-iron blow-off pipe and a 12-inch cast-iron supply pipe. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Bear Rock No. 2 Dam is considered to be unsafe/nonemergency. The structural condition of the embankment is considered to be good. The spillway capacity was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and was found to pass 30 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Bear Creek Lake Dam NDI ID Number PA 00545 DER ID Number 40 47 Delaware River Basin Bear Creek Luzerne County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Bear Creek Lake Dam NDI ID Number PA 00545 DER ID Number 40 47 Delaware River Basin Bear Creek Luzerne County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by O'BRIEN AND GERE ENGINEERS INC PHILADELPHIA PA JUSTIN AND COURTNEY DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bear Creek Lake Dam is a rock filled timber crib structure approximately 325 feet long and 17 feet high at its maximum section. An ungated drop spillway with an 158-foot long sharp crested weir is located approximately 60 feet from the right abutment (looking downstream). The 80 acre lake is used for recreation by the residents of Bear Creek Village. It is unknown when the dam was constructed. In the state inspection report of April, 1915 it is stated, 'This dam was constructed a great many years ago, but it has been repaired from time to time, so that more than likely none of the original structure is now in existence.' Examination of the results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the drop spillway is capable of passing 11 percent of the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) without overtopping of the embankment. Failure of the dam would significantly increase the hazard to loss of life downstream of the dam. Therefore, the capacity of the drop spillway is classified as 'seriously inadequate.' The dam is considered to be 'unsafe (non-emergency).'

Book National Dam Inspection Program Doverspike Number 2 Dam NDI I D PA 00810 DER I D 33 57 Ohio River Basin Caylor Run Jefferson County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Doverspike Number 2 Dam NDI I D PA 00810 DER I D 33 57 Ohio River Basin Caylor Run Jefferson County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Andersen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The condition of Doverspike No. 2 Dam is considered to be good, except that the dam has no outlet works and no formally engineered spillway facilities. A low spot on the crest of the dam located at the junction of the embankment and the right abutment appears to be the intended spillway overflow section. On the dates of inspection, the pool level was found to be approximately 5 feet below the low spot on the crest of the dam, and as reported by the representative of the owner, the pool is normally maintained at that level by seepage and evaporation losses from the reservoir. According to the recommended criteria, intermediate size dams in the significant hazard category are required to pass from 50 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) to full PMF. In view of the downstream damage potential, the lower limit of the recommended range is considered to be applicable to this dam. The flood discharge capacity was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and the dam was found to impound less than 20 percent of the PMF without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, the flood discharge capacity of the dam is classified to be inadequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Little Blue Run Dam NDI ID Number PA 917 DER ID Number 4 49 Ohio River Basin Little Blue Run Beaver County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Little Blue Run Dam NDI ID Number PA 917 DER ID Number 4 49 Ohio River Basin Little Blue Run Beaver County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions on March 14 and April 16, 1979, the condition of Little Blue Run Dam is considered to be good. No conditions were noted at this time that would significantly affect the structural performance of the dam. The flood discharge facilities for the dam were designed to pass the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, according to the recommended criteria, the flood discharge facilities of the dam are adequate. Presently, the pool elevation is approximately 170 feet below the dam crest level. The pool elevation is expected to reach spillway crest level in about the year 2010. The following recommendations should be implemented on a continuing basis: (1) The cracking observed on the crest should continue to be evaluated by the design engineers. Also, attention should be given to the slump and seepage observed on the left abutment. Erosion ditches on the right abutment should be filled; and (2) A formal warning system should be developed to alert the downstream residents in the event of emergencies.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Big Brown Dam Susquehanna River Basin Browns Run Cambria County Pennsylvania NDI I D Number PA 00502 DER I D Number 11 1 Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Big Brown Dam Susquehanna River Basin Browns Run Cambria County Pennsylvania NDI I D Number PA 00502 DER I D Number 11 1 Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Andersen and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Brown Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 290 feet long with a maximum height of approximately 37 feet from the downstream toe, and a crest width in the range of 8 to 11 feet. The downstream slope of the dam is 1-1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical and is protected with well-established grass. The upstream slope is protected by riprap extending to the crest level of the dam. The flood discharge facilities for the dam consist of a primary spillway incorporated into the outlet facilities and an open channel emergency spillway located on the right abutment. The outlet facilities consist of a 20-inch cast-iron supply line and a 20-inch cast-iron blow-off pipe. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Big Brown Dam is considered to be poor. Extensive swampy areas were observed along the toe of the dam. This condition, together with the steep downstream slope of the embankment raises concern as to the continued stability of the embankment. The flood discharge capacity of the dam was found to be at the lower limit of the recommended spillway capacity range of 50 percent to full PMF relative to the size and hazard classification of the dam.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galion Bay Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 400 feet long with a maximum height of 37 feet from the downstream invert of the outlet conduit and a crest width of 20 feet. Galion Bay Dam is one of the three dams which impound Lake Rene. The other two dams are Wolf Creek Dam, located at the west end of Lake Rene, and Lake Rene Dam, located on the east side of the reservoir. Lake Rene Dam, which was constructed in 1955, was the original dam at the site. Galion Bay Dam and Wolf Creek Dam were constructed in 1971 in conjunction with the enlargement of Lake Rene. The flood discharge facilities for Lake Rene consist of primary and emergency spillways associated with Galion Bay and Wolf Creek dams. The Galion Bay Dam flood discharge facilities are comprised of a drop inlet primary spillway located at the center of the embankment and an emergency spillway on the right abutment (looking downstream). The primary spillway structure consists of a single-stage reinforced concrete riser, a 36-inch-diameter reinforced concrete conduit, and a plunge pool at the downstream end of the outlet pipe. The emergency spillway is a 30-foot-wide trapezoidal earth channel excavated into the right abutment. The reservoir outlet pipe for the dam consists of a 15-inch steel pipe extending from the upstream toe of the dam to the drop inlet structure.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, operational history, and available engineering data, Heritage Reservation Dam is considered to be in excellent condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and the hazard classification is considered to be high. In accordance with the recommended guidelines, the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is considered to be the PMF (Probable Maximum Flood). Results of the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis indicate that the facility is capable of passing and/or storing the PMF without overtopping the dam or dike. Consequently, the spillway is considered adequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Storage Dam NDI I D Number PA 388 DER I D Number 24 47 Ohio River Basin Whetstone Branch of Little Toby Creek Elk County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Storage Dam NDI I D Number PA 388 DER I D Number 24 47 Ohio River Basin Whetstone Branch of Little Toby Creek Elk County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Lawrence D. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storage Dam consists of an earth embankment approximately 500 feet long with a maximum height of 36 feet from the downstream toe and a crest width of approximately 15 feet. The appurtenant structures of the dam consist of a combined primary and emergency spillway located on the left abutment (looking downstream) and outlet works near the right abutment. Based on the evaluation of the existing conditions, the condition of Storage Dam is considered to be good. Numerous seeps were observed along the left abutment, but these seeps are not considered to be a threat to the integrity of the embankment. However, a slump and an associated wet area were observed along the toe of the dam near the left abutment. This condition should be investigated and necessary repairs performed. The flood discharge capacity of the Storage Dam spillway was evaluated according to the recommended procedure and it was found to be 40 percent of the probable maximum flood (PMF) without overtopping the embankment. Therefore, according to the recommended criteria, the flood discharge capacity of the dam is classified to be inadequate.

Book National Dam Inspection Program PA 657 Dam Acme Dam NDI I D Number PA 00828 PennDER I D Number 65 133 Ohio River Basin Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program PA 657 Dam Acme Dam NDI I D Number PA 00828 PennDER I D Number 65 133 Ohio River Basin Jacobs Creek Westmoreland County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by Bernard M. Mihalcin and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a visual inspection, past performance, and available engineering data, the facility is considered to be in good condition. The size classification of the facility is intermediate and the hazard classification is considered to be high. The emergency spillway is capable of discharging the peak inflow resulting from a storm of PMF intensity and is, therefore, considered adequate. It is recommended that the owner: (a) Repair the damaged pond drain gate control and replace the missing manhole cover atop the service spillway riser. Consideration should be given to redesigning the gate control mechanism to protect it from future vandalism. (b) Consult with the U.S.D.A., Soil Conservation Service, to assess the erosion on the upstream slope in the area of the service spillway riser and implement any remedial measures deemed necessary. (c) Curtail the unauthorized vehicular travel across the embankment and repair and reseed any damaged (bare) areas. If control of unauthorized travel is not practical, some provision should be made to protect the embankment from rutting and erosion by placing a layer of gravel or stone across the crest. (d) Develop a formal operation and maintenance manual to ensure the continued proper care of the facility. In addition, a formal warning system should be implemented which provides detailed procedures to protect the lives and property of downstream residents. Included in the plan should be provisions for around-the-clock surveillance of the facility during periods of unusually heavy percipitation.

Book National Dam Inspection Program Bigby Run Dam NDI ID Number PA 226 DER ID Number 56 21 Ohio River Basin Bigby Creek Somerset County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report

Download or read book National Dam Inspection Program Bigby Run Dam NDI ID Number PA 226 DER ID Number 56 21 Ohio River Basin Bigby Creek Somerset County Pennsylvania Phase I Inspection Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of Bigby Run Dam is based upon visual observations made at the time of inspection, review of available records and data, hydraulic and hydrologic computations and past operational performance. The Bigby Run Dam appears to be in fair condition. Maintenance is considered fair. The concrete spillway is deteriorating with marked deterioration on the right spillway wall. Minor seepage was observed at the toe of the dam, adjacent to the left abutment contact. Seepage was estimated at 2 to 5 gallons per minute. The seepage should be monitored. The Bigby Run Dam is a high hazard-small size dam. The recommended Spillway Design Flood (SDF), for a dam of this size and classification, is in the range of 1/2 PMF to PMF. Since the Bigby Run Dam just meets the minimum criteria; and since the dam is located in a rural area suggesting only appreciable economic loss; compliance with the current practice of the Baltimore District Corps of Engineers leads to the selection of the 1/2 PMF as the Spillway Design Flood (SDF).
