Book Thai Peasant Personality

Download or read book Thai Peasant Personality written by Herbert P. Phillips and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers interested in the psychology of non-Western peoples will find this volume provocative in both descriptive and theoretical detail. The first book-length study of Thai psychological life, Thai Peasant Personality describes the members of a peasant community whose dominant personality traits are aimed at the maintenance of their individuality, privacy, and sense of self-regard. In addition, it offers suggestions for handling many of the theoretical and technical problems crucial to cross-cultural personality research. Basing his research on two years of fieldwork in the Central Plain community of Bang Chan, Herbert P. Phillips offers a systematic analysis and comparison of two kinds of data: observations of the villagers’ overt behavior in workaday social encounters, and their subjective responses to a special psychological test. Readers will find particular value in his discussion of the design, translation, and implementation of psychological research methods in non-Western cultures. Phillips analyzes the central role of affability and play in the villagers’ daily contacts, their use of politeness as a “social cosmetic,” and the implications of this cosmetic for the inner lives of the Thai. He examines the villagers’ readiness to become involved with others and the links that tie them together over time. He demonstrates how the individualistic tendencies of the Thai intrude on the stability of interpersonal relationships and how all social interactionin Bang Chan is set within a framework of cosmic unpredictability, with human volition only one of several indeterminate and uncontrollable factors in life. This “loosely structured” system of social relationships is seen to have its roots in early childhood, with strong support from both Hinayana Buddhist doctrine and the sociologically simple and undifferentiated nature of Bang Chan society. In presenting the psychological test results, the author examines the villagers’ attitudes toward authority, dependency, and aggression; their anxieties and reactions to crises; and their dominant drives and wishes. These various issues are linked to the theoretical problem of conformity and to the basic human need for privacy and psychological isolation. Book excerpt: The Book Develops Two Major Themes. The First Theme Attempts To Understand The Sources Of Value Orientation Of The Thai People, And Their Individual And Group Behaviour. To This End The Study Examines Three Major Value Systems And Their Institutions, As Well As Their Mutual Relationship And Interaction. As The First Value System, The Study Examines The Theravada Buddhism As Founded By The Buddha, Then Focuses On Its Application In Thailand, On Buddhist Ethics And Morality, On The Conflicts Between Some Aspects Of Buddhism And The Rapidly Changing Society And, Finally, On Various Movements Attempting To Reform Buddhism In That Country. As The Second Major Value System, The Study Examines The Role Which Animism And The Spirit Worship Play In The Daily Life Of The Thai People, Their Symbolism, And Their Fusion With Buddhism And Its Values And Institutions At The Grassroot Level Of The Society. As The Third Value System, The Study Discusses Various Theories Which Attempt To Explain The Psycho-Cultural Values And Attitudes Of The Thai People, How These Interact With Buddhism And Animism, And How They Add Another Dimension To The Already Complex Pattern Of Social Behaviour. These Three Value Systems Interact And Define The Parameters Within Which All Aspects Of The National Life Political, Cultural, Economic And Others Are Actualized. The Second Major Theme Of The Book Concentrates On The Position Of Women In Thailand. It Begins With The Explanation Of The Attitudes Which The Buddha Himself Held Towards The Women, Examines The Status Of Women In Early Buddhist Societies And Of Those Women Who Chose To Renounce The World And Join The Buddhist Order To Seek Personal Salvation, As Well As The Role Of The Lay Women In A Buddhist Society At That Time. The Book Then Focuses On The Position Of Women In The Thai Society Through Various Stages Of Its History, And Culminates In The Discussion Of The Legal Position Of Women Today And The Attempts To Improve Their Status. However, In Treating The Latter Subject The Study Is Descriptive Rather Than Prescriptive, Leaving It To The Thai Women Themselves To Decide Which Remedies To Pursue To Improve Their Position.

Book Materializing Thailand

Download or read book Materializing Thailand written by Penny Van Esterik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand has become well known throughout the world for wonderful cuisine, great package holidays, sumptuous temples and textiles. Noticeably absent from glossy tourist brochures but equally well known throughout the Western world is Thailand's seedier side - the world of child exploitation, rampant prostitution and AIDS. Thailand maintains its appeal by slipping the ugly and painful out of sight and by promoting women as exotic visual icons through beauty contests, state rituals and the sex trade. This book explores the construction of gender in Thailand and in particular the role Bangkok plays in establishing gender relations for the whole of the country. It examines the historical and cultural processes underlying Thai public culture, including historical theme parks. The author demonstrates how the materiality of the Thai world shapes gender relations and how Buddhism discourages essentialisms, including fixed binary gender identities. Throughout the book, appearances are shown to be critically important, and the essentialism of gender is maintained through display, public presentations, and everyday material practices. Anyone wishing to understand the complexity of Thailand will find this book provides a highly readable and insightful analysis.

Book Business Groups and the Thailand Economy

Download or read book Business Groups and the Thailand Economy written by Natenapha Wailerdsak and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business Groups and the Thailand Economy examines the role of business groups, specifically state, local, and foreign capitals in the economic development of emerging economies and highlights why business groups are essential in helping a country break out of the middle-income trap. Wailerdsak reviews Thailand’s industrial and economic growth strategies through the local and international investors and explains why business groups are one of the key drivers of economic advancement and why they help to avoid the middle-income trap. The author also examines their business power expansion methods, including selection and specialization, political influence, mergers and acquisitions, outward FDI and business alliances. The book concludes with policy recommendations of how the government can engage business groups to accelerate high-tech industrialization and create jobs. The middle-income trap issue faced by Thailand would be of interest to many emerging economies, especially scholars and policymakers researching on Asian business and management, Asian economies, developmental economics, political economy, policy studies, corporate governance, entrepreneurship, and private company strategic management in emerging countries.

Book Ideology and Revolution in Southeast Asia 1900 1980

Download or read book Ideology and Revolution in Southeast Asia 1900 1980 written by Clive J Christie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of 'Asian Values' has recently been emphasized by East and South East Asian political leaders. These leaders have argued that European political values have exercised an unhealthy hegemony over the international system, not only because of global influence exercised by European ideas during the colonial period, but because of 'Anglo-Saxon' dominance over the world orders that were set up in the aftermath of both the First and Second World Wars. This book considers the interaction between indigenous ('Asian') values and European ideology and the influence this relationship had on the nationalist and revolutionary movements of Southeast Asia that dominated the political systems of Southeast Asia in the period 1945-1975.
