Book Health and the National Health Service

Download or read book Health and the National Health Service written by John Carrier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NHS came into existence in an atmosphere of conflict centred on the strong ideological commitment of the Post-war Labour Government and the opposition of the Conservative Party of that time to the idea of a universally available and centrally planned medical care service. There was also opposition from some sections of the medical establishment who feared the loss of professional autonomy. Setting health policy in both an historical and modern context (post 1997) Carrier and Kendall weigh up the successes and failures of the National Health Service and examine the conflicts which have continued for over sixty years, in spite of efforts to solve financial problems in the NHS through increases in funding as well as structural and organisational change. After looking at recent responses to supposed failures of the NHS, they conclude that the NHS has successfully faced the challenges before it and is likely to continue to meet the changing health needs of the population. Financial stresses, concerns about the quality of care and demographic change, with consequent issues for the elderly and the chronically ill, continue to be urgent and politically contentious issues. This book is appropriate for a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate students studying health policy and the NHS.

Book Supporting People with Dementia at Home

Download or read book Supporting People with Dementia at Home written by David Challis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supporting People with Dementia at Home details a groundbreaking study of an intensive care management scheme designed for older people with dementia that are at risk of entry into residential care. The authors use a quasi-experimental approach to compare how the individuals on the mental health team in one community were matched to a similar community without the service. They analyze the evidence focusing on the eventual placement of the individual suffering, the quality of care they receive, and also the needs of their carers. This book offers valuable evidence about the factors which can maximize the independence and well being of older people with dementia, from the perspective of older people and their carers. For those who commission services, it is highly relevant to service models for the National Dementia Strategy in England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, this book explains why so many people suffer behavioural changes in later life; how this affects those around them; the services that exist to assist older people and those who work with them and how such services can be profitably used. A recurring theme is the interaction of the different varieties of mental illness with one another and with physical, emotional, social and personality factors. The book provides detailed guidance for social workers caring for the elderly on such topics as how an assessment of a mentally disturbed older person can be made; procedure for removal from home under a court order and compulsory admission to hospital; ways of communicating with elderly people and gauging the needs of relatives and carers.

Book Supported Housing

Download or read book Supported Housing written by Yoric Irving-Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the history of supported housing provision in the context of the broader political and theoretical considerations of the time in which the respective policies were being implemented. The book takes an historical perspective using path dependency as an analytical framework. Particular attention is paid to the critical junctures in the path of supported housing provision and how these limited and continue to limit the policy choices available. The book concludes with a look at the current state of supported housing policy with a view to making recommendations for how policy in this area could be carried forward. The hope is that readers of this book learn the lessons of previous policy initiatives in this area and, by looking at the philosophical underpinning for supported housing can make recommendations for how it can be funded and provided in the future. This book provides a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners seeking to both provide and influence policy in this area. It is also a useful source for students studying housing and urban policy.
