It examines the extent to the power of words matters when a region tries to break away to become a nation state. Using discourse analysis, this book examines how the process of secession affects internal ethnic relations and analyses how politicians interpret events and present arguments with the intention to mobilize their constituencies for independence. With in-depth case studies on the Slovenian, the Croatian and the Montenegrin independence movements, and by looking at cases from Indonesia and Spain, the author investigates how rhetoric affect internal ethnic relations during secession and how events and debate shape each other. The author demonstrates how in some cases of self-determination elites push for a higher level of sovereignty in the name of economic advancement, whereas in other cases, self-determination movements refer to ethnic identity and human rights issues. Book excerpt: Nationalism, National Identity and Movements begins by presenting an examination of how forced migratory movements, although seeming to question traditional national principles of the sovereign state as well as undermining or even eroding nationalist value systems, ended up strengthening the power of the nation-states during the period after the Second World War. In particular, it will investigate how different waves of refugees contributed to the consolidation of one specific type of nationalism: the ethnic one.Next, the authors analyse the role of national narratives in the development of national identity. This interdisciplinary approach offers a more complete and analytical understanding of how narratives of national identity are produced, transmitted and finally consumed by the members of a nation.Also in this book, detailed theoretical rationale for the relationships between identification and threat perceptions is presented, exploring the issues related to causal direction and links to attitudes toward immigrants and immigration policies. Although having a national identity on its own is not troubling, possessing an inflated sense of national identity, referred to as national group narcissism, may lead to biased perceptions of intergroup relations.Following this, the authors describe three different types of artworks and the identities associated with each artist in order to reveal the complex process through which Korean identity is formed. This research identifies the first type of artist as one who left South Korea as an adult in order to be deterritorialized from the given territory, and the individual's Koreanness has been one rediscovered by dialectical play with the Other.Usage of the colonial discourse is proposed as a way to represent social relationships, providing additional opportunities for the analysis of the political situation in Russia. Thus, the work of contemporary intellectuals who identify themselves as "Russian nationalists" is analyzed. Conclusions are made regarding the fundamental conflictual nature of intellectuals.The construction of a unified Mexican national identity is depicted in the concluding chapter, in a territory originally divided by adversarial ethnic groups into one nation glued by a common language and history. The authors conclude that nationalism in Mexico must be understood within educational, historical and contextual influences to assess costs and benefits.

There is wide variation, but on average older Whites are healthier than older Blacks and tend to outlive them. But Whites tend to be in poorer health than Hispanics and Asian Americans. This volume documents the differentials and considers possible explanations. Selection processes play a role: selective migration, for instance, or selective survival to advanced ages. Health differentials originate early in life, possibly even before birth, and are affected by events and experiences throughout the life course. Differences in socioeconomic status, risk behavior, social relations, and health care all play a role. Separate chapters consider the contribution of such factors and the biopsychosocial mechanisms that link them to health. This volume provides the empirical evidence for the research agenda provided in the separate report of the Panel on Race, Ethnicity, and Health in Later Life.

Participants and presenters focused on elements identified from the history and sociology of social change movements and how such elements can be applied to present-day efforts nationally and across communities to improve the chances for long, healthy lives for all. The idea of movements and movement building is inextricably linked with the history of public health. Historically, most movements - including, for example, those for safer working conditions, for clean water, and for safe food - have emerged from the sustained efforts of many different groups of individuals, which were often organized in order to protest and advocate for changes in the name of such values as fairness and human rights. The purpose of the workshop was to have a conversation about how to support the fragments of health movements that roundtable members believed they could see occurring in society and in the health field. Recent reports from the National Academies have highlighted evidence that the United States gets poor value on its extraordinary investments in health - in particular, on its investments in health care - as American life expectancy lags behind that of other wealthy nations. As a result, many individuals and organizations, including the Healthy People 2020 initiative, have called for better health and longer lives.

Although the violence in the Middle East has been dominating world politics for some time now, European governments have had their share of ethnic violence to contend with as this volume demonstrates. And as the case studies show, ranging as they do from the Basque Country to Chechnya, from Northern Ireland to Bosnia-Herzegovina, this applies to western Europe as much as to eastern Europe. However, in contrast to other parts of the world, instances where political struggles for power and social inclusion between minorities and majorities lead to full-fledged inter-ethnic warfare are still the exception; in the majority of cases conflicts are successfully de-escalated and even resolved. In a comprehensive conclusion, the volume offers a theoretical framework for the development of strategies to deal with violent ethnic conflict.

These concepts include not only images of the nation itself, but also images of other peoples. Although the construction of ethnic stereotypes during the "long" nineteenth century initially had other functions than simply the homogenization of the particular culture and the exclusion of "others" from the public sphere, the evaluation of peoples according to criteria that included "level of civilization" yielded "rankings" of ethnic groups within the Habsburg Monarchy. That provided the basis for later, more divisive ethnic characterizations of exclusive nationalism, as addressed in this volume that examines the roots and results of ethnic, nationalist, and racial conflict in the region from a variety of historical and theoretical perspectives.

Book excerpt: In this comparative study of Muslim nation-building and the so-called 'ethnic conflicts' the author reveals stunning parallels between the collapse of Tito's Yugoslavia and the ethno-national separation of colonial India. In both cases Muslims ended up in a nation state of their own without the majority of them wanting one. There were no mass movements that demanded a new 'homeland', which contradicts modernisation-theory approaches of nationalism. Wieland digs below the surface and sketches historic developments that triggered the construction and instrumentalisation of 'ethnic groups' in both cases. He concludes that the term ethnicity has lost its academic value because it suffers from inconsistencies and strong political implications. 'Ethnicity' is not an existing group of people but a concept of action and political resource detached from any historic context. The 'ethnocentre' varies. In both the Yugoslavian and the Indian case it was religion around which secondary features were added as contrast boosters. Bosnia and Pakistan were founded under the strong influence of political elites and external political actors, like the colonial power or the international community, who themselves through within the ethno-national paradigm and acted accordingly. This helped to create Muslim nation states despite considerable contradictions between the political action group and the 'ethnic group' they claimed to represent. While delivering convincing facts and new perspectives, this book is a passionate appeal for the deconstruction of 'ethnic' camps.

Contemporary nationalist movements can quickly attract fervent followings, but they can just as rapidly lose support. In Constructing Grievance, Elise Giuliano asks why people with ethnic identities throw their support behind nationalism in some cases but remain quiescent in others. Popular support for nationalism, Giuliano contends, is often fleeting. It develops as part of the process of political mobilization—a process that itself transforms the meaning of ethnic identity. She compares sixteen ethnic republics of the Russian Federation, where nationalist mobilization varied widely during the early 1990s despite a common Soviet inheritance. Drawing on field research in the republic of Tatarstan, socioeconomic statistical data, and a comparative discourse analysis of local newspapers, Giuliano argues that people respond to nationalist leaders after developing a group grievance. Ethnic grievances, however, are not simply present or absent among a given population based on societal conditions. Instead, they develop out of the interaction between people’s lived experiences and the specific messages that nationalist entrepreneurs put forward concerning ethnic group disadvantage. In Russia, Giuliano shows, ethnic grievances developed rapidly in certain republics in the late Soviet era when messages articulated by nationalist leaders about ethnic inequality in local labor markets resonated with people’s experience of growing job insecurity in a contracting economy. In other republics, however, where nationalist leaders focused on articulating other issues, such as cultural and language problems facing the ethnic group, group grievances failed to develop, and popular support for nationalism stalled. People with ethnic identities, Giuliano concludes, do not form political interest groups primed to support ethnic politicians and movements for national secession.
