Book Academic Reading Second Edition

Download or read book Academic Reading Second Edition written by Janet Giltrow and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reader has been designed to accompany Giltrow’s Academic Writing, one of the key principles of which is that there is a close connection between the processes of reading and of writing academic prose. Each reading is preceded by introductory commentary, questions, and suggestions for discussion, and the book also includes a brief general introduction. As with Giltrow’s Academic Writing, her Academic Reading is a challenging text. At its core are examples of actual academic writing of the sort that students must learn to deal with daily, and to write themselves. As newcomers to the scholarly community, students can find that community’s ways of reading and writing mysterious, unpredictable and intimidating. Academic Reading demystifies the scholarly genres, shedding light on their discursive conventions. Throughout, Academic Reading respects the student writer; it engages the reader’s interest without ever condescending, and it avoids entirely the arbitrary and the dogmatic. The second edition is expanded to include twenty-one selections, nineteen of which come from scholarly publications, and more than half of which are new to this edition.

Book excerpt: "Rich and detailed, Carter's world and characters live with an energy that makes it hard to believe this is his debut novel!" —Staci Olsen, Author of Falling through Stars “Hits the ground running, and feels like an epic saga from the opening paragraphs. Carter's characters are vivid and complex, often morally ambiguous, and completely engaging. Description and action are handled with balance and eloquence, with crackling dialogue that fully fleshes out each character.” —Darin Miller, Author of The Dwayne Morrow Mysteries “Page turner through and through. This book swept me away on an adventure I could never forget. Magical systems and emotions that hit home, with characters developing before my eyes. Carter instantly became one of my favorite authors.” —Haley Anna Marie, Author of the Elementas Series Thirty feet of rope bridge is all that keeps Nevin from escaping an abusive home life, but fear proves stronger than pain. When a lapse in memory and a bloody canteen coincide with the arrival of the Baron's constabulary, Nevin unwillingly goes on the run. Wherever he hides, fire and soldiers follow. But why does it feel like it's him they're looking for? The inferno chasing him casts a long shadow, and from that darkness emerges a covetous presence. Is he hallucinating, or is it his sins made manifest? With the flames driving him farther and farther from home, will he finally be able to muster the will to take control of an unraveling life, or will the strengthening shadows threaten the lives of foe and friend alike? 'Sparking the Inferno' is an enigmatic and moving tale of unfortunate circumstances and the responsibility of choice that plunges readers into an exciting journey across the troubled world of Stragus.

Book Bad Call

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harry Collins
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2017-09-01
  • ISBN : 0262534444
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Bad Call written by Harry Collins and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How technologies can get it wrong in sports, and what the consequences are—referees undermined, fans heartbroken, and the illusion of perfect accuracy maintained. Good call or bad call, referees and umpires have always had the final say in sports. Bad calls are more visible: plays are televised backward and forward and in slow motion. New technologies—the Hawk-Eye system used in tennis and cricket, for example, and the goal-line technology used in English football—introduced to correct bad calls sometimes get it right and sometimes get it wrong, but always undermine the authority of referees and umpires. Bad Call looks at the technologies used to make refereeing decisions in sports, analyzes them in action, and explains the consequences. Used well, technologies can help referees reach the right decision and deliver justice for fans: a fair match in which the best team wins. Used poorly, however, decision-making technologies pass off statements of probability as perfect accuracy and perpetuate a mythology of infallibility. The authors re-analyze three seasons of play in English Premier League football, and discover that goal line technology was irrelevant; so many crucial wrong decisions were made that different teams should have won the Premiership, advanced to the Champions League, and been relegated. Simple video replay could have prevented most of these bad calls. (Major League baseball learned this lesson, introducing expanded replay after a bad call cost Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game.) What matters in sports is not computer-generated projections of ball position but what is seen by the human eye—reconciling what the sports fan sees and what the game official sees.

Book Chappaquiddick

Download or read book Chappaquiddick written by Leo Damore and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An achievement of reportorial diligence, this book tells a story that the most imaginative crime novelist would have been hard put to invent. It is a tale of death, intrigue, obstruction of justice, corruption and politics." —People Magazine A young woman leaves a party with a wealthy U.S. senator. The next morning her body is discovered in his car at the bottom of a pond. This is the damning true story of the death of campaign strategist Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick and of the senator—37-year-old Senator Ted Kennedy—who left her trapped underwater while he returned to his hotel, slept, and made phone calls to associates. It is the story of a powerful, privileged American man who was able to treat a woman's life as disposable without facing real consequences. And it is the story of a shameful political coverup involving one of the nation's most well-connected families and its network of lawyers, public relations people, and friends who ensured Ted Kennedy remained a respected member of the Senate for forty more years. Originally published in 1988 under the title Senatorial Privilege, this book almost didn't make it into print after its original publisher, Random House, judged it too explosive and backed out of its contract with author Leo Damore. Mysteriously, none of the other big New York publishers wanted to touch it. Only when small independent publisher Regnery obtained the manuscript was the book's publication made possible and the true story of the so-called "Chappaquiddick Incident" finally told. This new edition, Chappaquiddick, is being released 30 years after the original Senatorial Privilege to coincide with the nationwide theatrical release of the movie Chappaquiddick starring Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, Ed Helms, Bruce Dern, and Jim Gaffigan.

She isn't totally innocent though, as she helps smuggle a couple into the United States. If that's not bad enough, both people turn out to be the parents of an internationally wanted terrorist. Of course, he gets sucked in all the way to help her. Some really nasty mercenaries have arranged this smuggling in order to draw out the terrorist. They hope to capture him for a multimillion-dollar bounty, and they have no qualms about innocent deaths along the way. They've killed many times before. When Jenny is kidnapped and her life is threatened, it gets personal for Lance. Though the local cops are willing to help, these mercenaries are way beyond their capabilities. Lance only sees one way to end this: find the terrorist himself and make life safe again. Lives hang in the balance.

  • Author : Lawrence Lariar
  • Publisher : Open Road Media
  • Release : 2019-02-05
  • ISBN : 1504056396
  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Death Paints the Picture written by Lawrence Lariar and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frist in a series: A comic book artist is drawn into an elaborate game of murder when he visits an isolated country estate in Woodstock. Lawrence Lariar was one the most popular cartoonists of the twentieth century. But from the 1940s through the 1960s, he also crafted a line of lean and mean detective and mystery novels under his own name as well as the pseudonyms Michael Stark, Adam Knight, Michael Lawrence, and Marston La France. Lariar now gets his due as a leading artist in hardboiled crime fiction. A graphic artist and true crime buff, Homer Bull is always looking for a good murder for his syndicated comic strip. He just never expects to be invited to one—courtesy of his old pal Hugo Shipley, a wealthy illustrator who’s notorious for his practical jokes. But when Shipley himself drops dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, it’s no laughing matter. Not that the other guests have a sense of humor. Among them, a dry tobacco magnate, a dull-witted gangster, a libelous newspaper reporter, and Homer’s ex-wife, a shallow doll who dumped him for a career in modeling. All but Homer are quick to accept the suicide bunk. Maybe that’s because all but Homer have their own sordid secrets and motives. And not one of them is leaving Shipley’s isolated estate before Homer finds his friend’s killer. Death Paints the Picture is the 1st book in the Homer Bull & Hank MacAndrews Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.
