Book excerpt: Lovers of the printed book, arise! Thirty of today’s top writers are here to tell you you’re not alone. In Bound to Last,an amazing array of authors comes to the passionate defense of the printed book with spirited, never-before-published essays celebrating the hardcover or paperback they hold most dear—not necessarily because of its contents, but because of its significance as a one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable object. Whether focusing on the circumstances behind how a particular book was acquired, or how it has become forever “bound up” with a specific person, time, or place, each piece collected here confirms—poignantly, delightfully, irrefutably—that every book tells a story far beyond the one found within its pages. In addition to a foreword by Ray Bradbury, Bound to Last features original contributions by:Chris Abani, Rabih Alameddine, Anthony Doerr, Louis Ferrante, Nick Flynn, Karen Joy Fowler, Julia Glass, Karen Green, David Hajdu, Terrence Holt, Jim Knipfel, Shahriar Mandanipour, Sarah Manguso, Sean Manning, Joyce Maynard, Philipp Meyer, Jonathan Miles, Sigrid Nunez, Ed Park, Victoria Patterson, Francine Prose, Michael Ruhlman, Elissa Schappell, Christine Schutt, Jim Shepard, Susan Straight, J. Book The Nashville Number System Fake Book

Download or read book The Nashville Number System Fake Book written by Hal Leonard Corp. and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Fake Book). The Nashville Number System is the standard way for a professional country musician to notate a song. The system has been around since the 1950s, and it rapidly became widespread within the country music community because of how efficiently it can represent music. In essence, a Nashville number chart conveys the harmony, key, meter, rhythm, phrase structure, instrumentation, arrangement, and form of a song all on a single piece of paper. An introduction is included that thoroughly explains how to use the book. Lyrics are not included. This valuable resource gathers together 200 country standards from yesterday's favorites to today's chart-topping hits, including: Achy Breaky Heart (Don't Tell My Heart) * Act Naturally * All the Gold in California * Always on My Mind * Amazed * Battle of New Orleans * Before He Cheats * Before the Next Teardrop Falls * Behind Closed Doors * Bless the Broken Road * Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain * Boot Scootin' Boogie * A Boy Named Sue * Breathe * Coal Miner's Daughter * Could I Have This Dance * Crazy * The Dance * Delta Dawn * The Devil Went down to Georgia * Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue * Elvira * Folsom Prison Blues * Friends in Low Places * The Gambler * God Bless the U.S.A. * He Stopped Loving Her Today * Hey, Good Lookin' * I Hope You Dance * I Walk the Line * I Will Always Love You * In Color * Jesus Take the Wheel * King of the Road * Live like You Were Dying * The Long Black Veil * Lucille * Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love) * Mean * Need You Now * On the Road Again * Redneck Woman * Springsteen * Stand by Your Man * This Kiss * You're Still the One * Your Cheatin' Heart * and more!

Book Nashville s Streetcars and Interurban Railways

Download or read book Nashville s Streetcars and Interurban Railways written by Ralcon Wagner and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nashville's 150-year public transportation heritage is a rich and colorful one that began in 1866 when two private companies, the McGavock and Mount Vernon Horse Railroad Company and the South Nashville Street Railroad Company, commenced operation. The first cars were mule powered. During the 1880s, as streetcar routes became longer and too strenuous for animal power, steam dummy lines were introduced. On April 30, 1889, Nashville became one of the earliest cities served by electric street railways, developing a 70-mile system by 1915. In addition to its advanced streetcar system, Nashville was also served by two interurban railway systems. Over time, improved roads and affordable cars caused ridership on public transportation to drop rapidly. By February 1941, buses had replaced the last of the city's aging streetcars. The traction era had come to an end.

Book excerpt: “Perfectly captures the spirit of Music City . . . An incredible collection of recipes that makes you want to spend as much time as possible in Nashville” (Sean Brock, chef and author of Heritage). If it seems like Nashville is everywhere these days—that’s because it is. GQ recently declared it “Nowville,” and it has become the music hotspot for both country and rock. But as hot as the music scene is, the food scene is even hotter. In Nashville Eats, more than one hundred mouthwatering recipes reveal why food lovers are headed south for Nashville’s hot chicken, buttermilk biscuits, pulled pork sandwiches, cornmeal-crusted catfish, chowchow, fried green tomatoes, and chess pie. Author Jennifer Justus whips up the classics—such as pimento cheese and fried chicken—but also includes dishes with a twist on traditional Southern fare—such as Curried Black Chickpeas or Catfish Tacos. And alongside the recipes, Jennifer shares her stories of Nashville—the people, music, history, and food that make it so special. “A love letter to the working-class cooking of Nashville . . . Nashville Eats by Jennifer Justus is a well-honed cultural passkey to one of America’s great culinary cities.” —John T. Edge, coeditor, The Southern Foodways Alliance Community Cookbook
