Book A Narrative of the Life and Adventure of Venture

Download or read book A Narrative of the Life and Adventure of Venture written by Venture Smith and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture (1798) is an autobiography by Venture Smith. Written while Smith was living in freedom on his own farm in Connecticut, A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture is recognized by scholars as a pioneering work of African American nonfiction and one of the earliest known slave narratives in American history. Born the son of Saugnm Furro, a prince of Dukandarra, Smith was captured as a boy and sold into slavery on the Gold Coast of Africa. Brought to Barbados by way of the Middle Passage, Smith was eventually sold to Robinson Mumford, a landowner from Rhode Island. Upon arrival in the British colony, Smith was put to work in the Mumford household, gaining the trust of his enslaver while enduring the abuses of Mumford’s young son. At 22, he married Meg, a fellow enslaved woman, and was soon swept up in an escape attempt with an Irish indentured servant. Betrayed at Montauk Point by the Irishman, Smith was forced to capture him and return to Rhode Island, where he was sold to Thomas Stanton in Connecticut. Separated from his wife and daughter, subjected to worse abuses than before, Smith sought to gain his freedom by any means necessary. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Venture Smith’s A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture is a classic of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Twenty Eight Years a Slave

Download or read book Twenty Eight Years a Slave written by Thomas L. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas L. Johnson's remarkable life, wherein he was born into slavery before going on to a successful career as a minister and missionary, is told here in his own words. Until the age of twenty-eight, Johnson lived under the yolk of his slave masters. As a servant he was subject to abuse for trivial matters, such as not knowing the difference between right and left. Sold on by his master whilst still a teenager, the author had already self-taught himself rudiments of literacy from letters and newspapers left around his master's house. Luckily, his new master's son was kind, and helped Johnson with vocabulary and letters. This knowledge helped Johnson keep aware of developments - the abolitionist movement, which sought freedom for all slaves, was of particular interest, as were the politics of Britain, which had already outlawed slavery. Significantly, Thomas also became interested in religion, learning many words, expressions and lessons from the Bible. After emancipation, this knowledge spurred him on to join the priesthood. He travelled to New York, and soon discovered his natural talent for speaking. A black preacher so soon after emancipation was an unusual sight; it wasn't long before Johnson had made friends and began to contemplate further travels to spread God's word. Sure enough, his talents saw him permanently resettle in England, and embark upon travels even farther afield.

Book The Odyssey of an African Slave

Download or read book The Odyssey of an African Slave written by Sitiki and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2009-09-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently discovered as a hand-written document in the Buckingham Smith Collection at the New York Historical Society, this remarkable first-person narrative traces the life of Sitiki, whose name was changed to Jack Smith after his enslavement in America. Captured and sold into slavery in Africa as a five-year-old, Sitiki traveled to America as a cabin boy. Eventually sold by the ship's captain to Josiah Smith of Savannah, Georgia, he lived there and in Connecticut with his new master. Captured by the British during the War of 1812, he was returned to the Smiths, to be freed only after the Civil War. He went on to become the first black Methodist minister in St. Augustine, Florida, where he established his own church. Patricia Griffin does not leave the story at the conclusion of the slave narrative, but explores Sitiki's experiences and places them in clear and valuable context. She presents the narrative unencumbered, allowing Sitiki’s authority, compassion, and personality to speak for itself.

The boy passed from hand to hand and after a short time came to Virginia to a plantation owner, who in turn sold him to an English naval officer named Henry Pascal. As a personal servant, he participated in the Seven Years' War in America from 1757 to 1762. In 1762 he was resold to a plantation owner and returned to the West Indies. Here he was able to buy his own freedom, but remained with his former slave owner, the Quaker Robert King. In 1773, he participated in an exploratory voyage to the Arctic. Book American Slaves and African Masters

Download or read book American Slaves and African Masters written by C. Sears and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether by falling prey to Algerian corsairs or crashing onto the desert shores of Western Sahara, a handful of Americans in the first years of the Republic found themselves enslaved in a system that differed so markedly from nineteenth century U.S. slavery that some contemporaries and modern scholars hesitate to categorize their experiences as 'slavery.' Sears uses a comparative approach, placing African enslavement of Americans and Europeans in the context of Mediterranean and Ottoman slaveries, while individually investigating the system of slavery in Algiers and Western Sahara. This work illuminates the commonalities and peculiarities of these slaveries, while contributing to a growing body of literature that showcases the flexibility of slavery as an institution.
