Book excerpt: Nancy Prince is an African American woman who writes about her personal and professional life, including her marriage and travels abroad to Russia and Jamaica. It's a vivid account of the events that would shape her business and legacy. Little is known about Nancy Prince's early years. She was born in Massachusetts to a seaman and mother who remarried multiple times. Despite an unstable homelife, Nancy helped to support the family any way she could. She worked as a servant before marrying Nero Prince, a foot soldier and cofounder of the Prince Hall Freemasons. They eventually moved overseas where Nero held multiple positions in the Russian Courts. Nancy became a successful businesswoman, establishing a boarding school, giving lecturers and working as a seamstress. A Narrative of the Life and Travels of Mrs. Nancy Prince explores the author's unconventional path to success. She surpassed expectations to become a respected figure among her peers. As an entrepreneur, she provided a vital service and opportunities to those who needed them most. Book Sentimental Confessions

Download or read book Sentimental Confessions written by Joycelyn Moody and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentimental Confessions is a groundbreaking study of evangelicalism, sentimentalism, and nationalism in early African American holy women’s autobiography. At its core are analyses of the life writings of six women--Maria Stewart, Jarena Lee, Zilpha Elaw, Nancy Prince, Mattie J. Jackson, and Julia Foote--all of which appeared in the mid-nineteenth century. Joycelyn Moody shows how these authors appropriated white-sanctioned literary conventions to assert their voices and to protest the racism, patriarchy, and other forces that created and sustained their poverty and enslavement. In doing so, Moody also reveals the wealth of insights that could be gained from these kinds of writings if we were to acknowledge the spiritual convictions of their authors--if we read them because (not although) they are holy texts. The deeply held, passionately expressed beliefs of these women, says Moody, should not be brushed aside by scholars who may be tempted to view them as naïve or as indicative only of the racial, class, and gender oppressions these women suffered. In addition, Moody promotes new ways of looking at dictated narratives without relegating them to a status below self-authored texts. Helping to recover a neglected chapter of American literary history, Sentimental Confessions is filled with insights into the state of the nation in the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: In 'Thirteen Years of a Busy Woman's Life' by Mrs. Alec-Tweedie, the reader is taken on a captivating journey through the daily life and experiences of a woman in the late 19th century. The book is written in a detailed and descriptive style, providing insight into the challenges and triumphs of a woman navigating societal expectations and personal ambitions. Through anecdotes and observations, the author offers a unique perspective on the role of women during this period, shedding light on both the limitations and opportunities they faced. The book's literary context is rooted in the tradition of memoirs and autobiographies, offering a firsthand account of a lesser-known aspect of history. Mrs. Alec-Tweedie's thoughtful reflections and engaging storytelling make this book a compelling and informative read for anyone looking to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of women in the past.

Book Published by the Author

Download or read book Published by the Author written by Bryan Sinche and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publication is an act of power. It brings a piece of writing to the public and identifies its author as a person with an intellect and a voice that matters. Because nineteenth-century Black Americans knew that publication could empower them, and because they faced numerous challenges getting their writing into print or the literary market, many published their own books and pamphlets in order to garner social, political, or economic rewards. In doing so, these authors nurtured a tradition of creativity and critique that has remained largely hidden from view. Bryan Sinche surveys the hidden history of African American self-publication and offers new ways to understand the significance of publication as a creative, reformist, and remunerative project. Full of surprising turns, Sinche's study is not simply a look at genre or a movement; it is a fundamental reassessment of how print culture allowed Black ideas and stories to be disseminated to a wider reading public and enabled authors to retain financial and editorial control over their own narratives.

Book The Most Beautiful

Download or read book The Most Beautiful written by Mayte Garcia and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the one-year anniversary of his death, legendary musician Prince's first wife shares a uniquely intimate, candid, and revelatory look inside the personal and professional life of one of the world's most beloved icons. In The Most Beautiful, a title inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story, Mayte Garcia for the first time shares the deeply personal story of their relationship and offers a singular perspective on the music icon and their world together: from their unconventional meeting backstage at a concert (and the long-distance romance that followed), to their fairy-tale wedding (and their groundbreaking artistic partnership), to the devastating losses that ultimately dissolved their romantic relationship for good. Throughout it all, they shared a bond more intimate than any other in Prince's life. No one else can tell this story or can provide a deeper, more nuanced portrait of Prince -- both the famously private man and the pioneering, beloved artist -- than Mayte, his partner during some of the most pivotal personal and professional years of his career. The Most Beautiful is a book that will be returned to for decades, as Prince's music lives on with generations to come.
