Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of Captain James Fawckner's Travels on the Coast of Benin, West Africa The Narrative commences from the 28th of June, 1825, (the period of my leaving Bad agry, ) but it will be necessary perhaps to inform the reader, that for some time previous to this I had-been engaged on the coast of Africa. I therefore subjoin a brief account of what transpired from the period of my leaving England up to the time of the commencement of the Narrative, the loss of the ship, &c. After leaving England, the vessel I had the command of, the Nymph, was frozen up in Amsterdam for three months; at length we sailed with a cargo of general goods for the Cape of Good Hope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of a Voyage From Boston to the West Coast of Africa: With a Full Description of the Manner of Trading With the Natives on the Coast In presenting this volume to the public, I deem it necessary to state that some years since, and subsequently to two voyages to the West Coast of Africa, I was induced, by the request of sev eral friends, to give a brief account from personal obwrvation of our intercourse with the sable na tives of that great quarter of the globe. For this purpose I prepared several numbers for the press entitled Recollections of Africa. These having been favorably received, as they were issued through the columns of a Boston newspaper, led me to write out in detail the minutiae of a traffic with the numerous and various tribes of Africans, extending through an extent of country, along the shore, of nearly fifteen hundred miles. Book Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries

Download or read book Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries written by David Livingstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of an Expedition to the Zambesi and Its Tributaries: And of the Discovery of the Lakes Shirwa and Nyassa, 1858-1864 But the main object of the Portuguese. Government is not geographicah It is to bolster up that pretense to power which has been the only obstacle to the establishment of lawful commerce and friendly relations with the native in habitants of Eastern Africa. The following work contains abundant confirmation of all that was advanced by me at the Bath meeting of the British Association; and I may here add that it is this unwarranted assumption of power over 1360 miles of coast - from English River to. Cape Delgado, where the Portuguese have, in fact, little real authority - which per petuates the barbarism of the inhabitants. The Portuguese interdict all foreign commerce except at a very few points where they have established custom-houses, and even at these, by an exaggerated and obstructive tariff and differential du ties, they completely shut out the natives from any trade ex cept that in slaves.
