Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Voyage to the Polar Sea, Vol. 1 of 2: During 1875-6 in H. M. Ships 'Alert' and 'Discovery' In the following narrative I have endeavoured to give a plain and faithful account of the voyage of H.M. ships 'Alert' and 'Discovery' to and from the Polar Sea; together with the results of the explorations which were made along its shores, and over the ice in the direction of the North Pole, by means of sledging. I have written for the information of future Arctic explorers; and also under a feeling of duty to the many, both in this country and abroad, whose earnest good wishes and kind sympathies were with us during our absence. As the expectations which were entertained regarding our reaching the North Pole were not realized, I must, in justice to the gallant men whom I commanded, express my firm conviction that it was due solely to the fact that the North Pole is unattainable by the Smith Sound route. Ships 'Alert' and 'Discovery' Anxiety About Aldrich's Party - Lieutenant May Sent to Relieve Him Geese and Ducks Arrive - Return of Aldrich - Commencement of Thaw - Extracts From Lieut. Aldrich's Official Report. Commander Markham's men raised serious apprehensions regarding the health of the western division of travellers. They were due at the Joseph Henry depot on the 13th, but as Aldrich's last accounts informed me that the provisions he had saved would enable him to prolong his journey six or seven days, and not expecting that his men would be called upon to undergo much more severe labour than former Arctic travellers had successfully combated, I was not greatly alarmed about him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea, in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22 It;will be seen, in the course of the Narrative as well as in the Appendix, how much reason I had to. Be satisfied with, and how great my obligations are to, all the Gentlemen who were associated with me 'in the Expedition, whose kindness, good conduct, and cordial, co-operation, have made an impression which can never be effaced from my mind. The unfortunate death of Mr. Hood is the only drawback which I feel from the otherwise unalloyed pleasure I derived from reflecting on that cordial unanimity which at all times prevailed among us in the days of sunshine, and in those of sickness and sorrow.
