Book excerpt: The author, an editor of Campaigns Magazine for ten years, has written a groundbreaking new study of Napoleon's disasterous Russian campaign of 1812. In doing this, he has employed primary sources never before translated from the German and Russian. He points out the real reasons for Napoleon's defeat which had nothing to do with cold weather but rather were a complex combination of faulty logistics, bureaucratic mismanagement and Napoleon's own but uncharacteristic indecision and bad choices.

Book Napoleon s Russian Campaign of 1812 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Napoleon s Russian Campaign of 1812 Classic Reprint written by Edward Foord and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Napoleon's Russian Campaign of 1812 During recent years the history of most of Napoleon's great campaigns has been given to the world, with the notable exception of that of the catastrophic Russian expedition of 1812. Apart from compilations, I have met only one original work on the subject, in the English language, during the ten years the present work has been in preparation. The publication of thousands of documents dealing with the struggle from the French side by the Historical Section of the French War Office, has rendered easily accessible an immense mass of material for the earlier period of the campaign. A beginning in this respect has also been made by the War Office at St. Petersburg, and some interesting light is thereby thrown upon the preparations on the Russian side, as well as upon the personalities of the Russian leaders. There are also many documents from private sources which have been collected and published. My aim has been simply to relate the history of the terrible campaign in straightforward fashion, without obscuring the narrative by too much digression. I believe that, as matters stand, a better service will thus have been rendered to the cause of history than by the composition of a huge essentially technical work - for which, indeed, there is no place in this country. Book The Russian Campaign Of 1812

Download or read book The Russian Campaign Of 1812 written by Carl Von Clausewitz and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the enormous oeuvre of Clausewitz the best-known work, by far, is the unfinished magnum opus On War. His works include many excellent writings on military history, of which The Campaign of 1812 in Russia is, assuredly, the masterpiece. This book is a superb first-hand account and analysis of the military disaster of 1812 and the characters who played a significant role in it. An eyewitness and participant in the war, Clausewitz' writing remains the most serious source on that campaign. Napoleon's campaign of 1812 against Russia was a crucial event in the Napoleonic history. At the beginning of 1812, Napoleon was at the peak of his glory. On the eve of the Russian campaign the majority of European diplomats thought that Napoleon would emerge victorious. The campaign, however, proved to be disastrous for the French Grand Arme. The Battle of Borodino, with heavy causalities on both sides, was probably the hardest fought battle of the Napoleonic era. Victory at Borodino gained Napoleon entry to Moscow only to end in catastrophe and the retreat of the French army in fall of the same year. The campaign of 1812 against Russia marked the beginning of the end of Napoleon's rule in Europe. Clausewitz is more than a military historian in the traditional sense. His concrete and objective analysis enables him to appreciate the situation in all its political, diplomatic and military ramifications. The Russian Campaign of 1812 will be of interest to historians, political scientists, and students of military history and strategy.

Book Human Voices of the Russian Campaign of 1812

Download or read book Human Voices of the Russian Campaign of 1812 written by Arthur Chuquet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few French historians of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period have the stature of Arthur Chuquet, his copious writings on the era are most penetrating and accurate. He was also a master of infusing them with a character of the men that shaped the age; this was possible only by his encyclopaedic knowledge of the memoirs and letters of the combatants, diplomats, generals of the European powers. In this translation of one of his volumes, he focusses on the experiences of the men of the Grande Armée as they march into Russia, a march that would cost so many of their lives. The vivid pictures drawn from the memoiralists are elucidated by Chuquet’s notes and his tight incisive editing. Not a campaign history, but snapshots of the experiences of the high and low of the French and Allied forces; from Napoleon’s aide-de-camp de Narbonne to lowly paymaster Guillaume Peyrusse. An excellent collection of memoirs. Author — Arthur Chuquet (1853-1925)

Book Napoleon s Invasion of Russia 1812

Download or read book Napoleon s Invasion of Russia 1812 written by Eugene Tarlé and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) is one of the most illustrated political and military figures of the last two millennia. He has remained in the memory of the world as a legend that the passage of the years has failed to blur. On the contrary, Napoleon Bonaparte widely continues to be considered the personification of human genius. Originally published in this English translation in 1942, leading Russian historian Evgeny Tarle details Napoleon’s military campaign to invade Russia in the early nineteenth century. “The campaign of 1812 was more frankly imperialistic than any other of Napoleon’s wars; it was more directly dictated by the interests of the French upper middle class. The war of 1796-7, the conquest of Egypt in 1798-9, the second Italian campaign, and the recent defeat of the Austrians could still be justified as necessary measures of defence against the interventionists. The Napoleonic press called the Austerlitz campaign ‘self-defence’ against Russia, Austria, and England. The average Frenchman considered even the subjugation of Prussia in 1806-7 no more than a just penalty inflicted on the Prussian court for the arrogant ultimatum sent by Frederick-William III to the ‘peace-loving’ Napoleon, constantly harried by troublesome neighbours. Napoleon never ceased to speak of the fourth conquest of Austria in 1809 as a ‘defensive’ war, provoked by Austrian threats. Only the invasion of Spain and Portugal was passed over in discreet silence. “The War of 1812 was a struggle for survival in the full sense of the word—a defensive struggle against the onslaughts of the imperialist vulture.”—E. V. Tarle
