Book Napoleon s Commentaries on the Wars of Julius Caesar

Download or read book Napoleon s Commentaries on the Wars of Julius Caesar written by and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While in exile on St Helena, Napoleon dictated a commentary on the wars of Julius Caesar, later published in 1836. In each chapter he summarized the events of one campaign, then added comments from the standpoint of his own military knowledge. Over the nearly two millennia between Caesar and Napoleon some aspects of warfare had changed, notably the introduction of firearms. But much remained the same: the rate of movement of armies (at the foot pace of horse or man); human muscle power as the main source of energy for construction work; some military techniques, notably bridge construction; as well as the actual territory fought over by Caesar and later by Napoleon. Napoleons commentary thus provides a fascinating and highly authoritative insight into Caesars wars, as well as providing a window into Napoleons own thinking and attitudes. Napoleon in places detects mistakes on the part of Caesar and his enemies, and says what they should have done differently. Remarkably, this is thought to be the first full English translation of Napoleon's work.Napoleon Bonaparte was born to an obscure Corsican family but rose through the ranks of the French army to become Emperor of France, conqueror of most of Europe and acknowledged military genius. He wrote this book while in exile on St Helena. The translator. RA Maguire, is a former civil engineer with a long-standing interest in military and ancient history.

Book excerpt: For the first time ever, Napoleon's "Chronicles of Caesar's Wars" ("Prcis des guerres de Csar") is available in English.Dictated by Napoleon to Count Marchand, his valet, while in exile on St. Helena, Chronicles of Caesar's Wars explores Caesar's rise, his campaigns in Europe and North Africa, and the plot that killed him. Napoleon, who had a lifelong obsession with Caesar, wrote this book in one of his last acts. The work relaxed him, "tossing a few flowers on the path that was leading to the tomb," as Count Marchand's preface recalls.Napoleon passionately explores Caesar's battles in Gaul and during the Civil War. He concludes each chapter with observations, sometimes providing details, sometimes veering away from praise towards criticism, applying the insights of a military career and a healthy ego to explain what he would have done better. Napoleon ends the book with a remarkable defense of Caesar's dictatorship. He takes apart his assassins' justifications and the fault-finding of "good Plutarch the libeler" with such fervor that one can scarcely believe a gulf of two millennia stood between the two eminent men. In a sense, though, it was also a defense of his own government.Attached to the book are previously untranslated essays in which Napoleon takes on the role of literary critic and philosopher. He criticizes Virgil's Aeneid for butchering Homer's Iliad, and Voltaire for unflatteringly depicting Mohammad, another of Napoleon's heroes. He explores in another essay whether a man has the right to kill himself, an act we now know he had personally attempted.

Book Commentaries on the Gallic War

Download or read book Commentaries on the Gallic War written by Julius Caesar and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2019-04-29T22:52:51Z with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentaries on the Gallic War describes the conflicts between Rome and the region of Gaul in western Europe, as well as the Germanic peoples who lived to the east of the river Rhine, and Britain to the north, in the later years of the Roman republic. Despite being written in the 3rd person, the commentaries are the memoirs of Julius Caesar himself, and offer a unique insight into these events. Before the Gallic war began, the Romans had already conquered the region known as Provincia Nostra (literally: “our province”), which is now Languedoc and Provence in the south of France. Julius Caesar had been one of the two consuls elected in the year 59 BC. The consuls held the highest political office in the Roman republic, but their terms only lasted a year. When his consulship came to an end, Caesar retained power through the position of proconsul, governing Provincia Nostra and two other provinces. This provided Caesar with the necessary command to conduct the military campaigns in Gaul. Caesar’s victories in Gaul had huge repercussions on the future of Rome: the related work, Commentaries on the Civil War, documents the ensuing conflict between Caesar and Pompey that ultimately led to the end of the Roman republic and the beginning of the Roman empire. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two great commentaries of Julius Caesar - the Gallic War and the Civil War - are united in this superb hardcover edition. The commentaries were devised by Julius Caesar as a means of gaining support amongst the plebiscite, securing his position against his cunning political enemies in Rome. The Gallic War details both the battles and the merits of imperialist expansion: together with fierce accounts of bloody warfare, we hear arguments for the advantageous nature of conquest in terms of gaining cultural influence and new resources. Caesar's Civil War offers his perspective on the chaos which engulfed Rome following the conclusion of the Gallic campaigns. The factional conflict, wherein Caesar was pitted against his former friend and ally Pompey, lasted five years and was the precursor to the creation of the Roman Empire. Translated to English by classics scholar W. A. McDevitte, this version of Caesar's Commentaries remains as authoritative and well-regarded today as when first published in 1915.
