Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naomi: A Dramatic Poem; And Other Pieces Authors have generally taken a spiritual view of this fine subject, and the writer of these lines is deeply indebted to a literary friend of acknowledged learning and abilities for much information on this head; but conscious that such a view of the case requires deep, important, and devoted reflection, she confines herself to temporal facts, fearing she might tread too lightly on "holy ground." Among the many beautiful and interesting characters of scripture, there are none more attractive than the exemplary Naomi, and the amiable Ruth. The former is a model of maternal love - the latter of dignified humility, unshaken firmness, and filial tenderness. Those who cannot follow the destiny of this sweet character with intense interest, weep at her youthful trials, and rejoice in the elevation which rewarded her exalted virtue, must be dead to the best feelings of enlightened minds. Many of the busy actors on life's busy stage, and some amid those who tread the velvet avenue of affluence, are unmindful how frequently the same touching scenes might appear to them, were they not too busy, or too careless to observe, and too negligent of their duty to assist. Yet, grateful remembrance must add, there are in the highest ranks of life, those who delight to smooth the rugged path of adversity, and to cheer the gloom of affliction by the sunlight of kindness. Book Early American Women Dramatists 1780 1860

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. Although contemporary feminist criticism has mainly focused upon American women playwrights of the twentieth century-women, there is evidence that a feminist tradition rooted deep in the nationalistic and democratic impulses of the American nation existed more than a hundred years before these women started writing. It may come as a surprise to some readers that a significant but overlooked number of women playwrights vitally contributed to the development of early American drama. This study covers the period between 1775 and 1860, a time when American men and women struggled to define themselves and their place in response to the radical economic and institutional transformations which characterized that period. Based on the assumption that women's experience of the world differs from men's, the author tries to show that the plays of my study are sites of gender inscriptions as well as collective evidence that late-eighteenth and nineteenth-century men and women were affected differently by the economic, political, and social changes that were taking place in America at that time.

Book excerpt: Nominated for the National Book Award in 1952, Naomi Replansky's first book Ring Song dazzled critics with its candor and freshness of language. Here at long last is the new and collected work of a lifetime by a writer hailed as "one of the most brilliant American poets" by George Oppen. Replansky is a poet whose verse combines the compression of Emily Dickinson, the passion of Anna Akhmatova, and the music of W.H. Auden. These poems, which Marie Ponsot calls "sixty years of a free woman's song," are Replansky's hymns to the struggle for justice and equality and to the enduring beauty of life in our dangerous world.

Book An Infusion of Violets

Download or read book An Infusion of Violets written by Nancy Naomi Carlson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the same musical sense of language she applies to her translations, Nancy Naomi Carlson masterfully interprets herself in An Infusion of Violets. The sometimes erotic, sometimes melancholy landscapes she creates as the self-appointed sitar's "ragged throat, pitched / between here and when, / caught in quartertones," take our breath away. Carlson describes an interior world where tears can produce "so much salt a body floats away," where "music tuned to loss descends with rain," and where hope is placed in the "kill-cure." Here we encounter Carlson's ex-husbands and luminaries such as Rachmaninoff and Monet, among others. Filled with striking images and sensuous language, An Infusion of Violets is an evocative mix of formal and free-verse poems.
