Book excerpt: Maggie Jordan can’t wait to convert an historic Nantucket home into a B&B and move on to her next project. However, her intention to flip it for a sizeable profit is something she must keep to herself if she hopes to win the acceptance of islanders and popularize the business. She can’t afford to grow attached to the house, or succumb to Nantucket’s quaint charms, and definitely must not fall in love. But neither can Maggie resist the conundrum that is Ellis Chilton, a reserved, solitary islander and mariner since childhood. Seemingly content being attached only to her boat and the ocean, Ellis projects a refreshing air of independence, an aura of conviction and grit that tugs Maggie ever closer to a decision that will alter both their lives.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With photography, line drawings, and stories, this book captures the architectural history of Nantucket Island, on the East Coast. From its days when the Quakers gained a stronghold on the island, distinguishing their homes with an aesthetic of simplicity and superb craftsmanship, Nantucket has been shaped by the character and tradition of those who have designed and inhabited the tiny island. Today, Nantucket's significant cache of historic buildings - from simple lean-to houses to Federal-style mansions to clapboard Victorian summer cottages - are the subject of a preservation movement that serves to protect the island's rich cultural tradition for generations to come." "The book draws upon primary sources, diaries, oral histories, and archived photographs to examine the rich architectural heritage of this designated national treasure. Sea Captains' Houses is a study of the homes that have come to characterize this culturally rich island, making this book appealing to not only Nantucket homeowners but also visitors to the island and all those who admire America's architectural heritage."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: "The queen of beach reads" (New York Magazine) and #1 New York Times bestselling author delivers an immensely satisfying page-turner in this tale about a summer of scandal at a storied Nantucket hotel. Fresh off a bad breakup with a longtime boyfriend, Nantucket sweetheart Lizbet Keaton is desperately seeking a second act. When she's named the new general manager of the Hotel Nantucket, a once Gilded Age gem turned abandoned eyesore, she hopes that her local expertise and charismatic staff can win the favor of their new London billionaire owner, Xavier Darling, as well as that of Shelly Carpenter, the wildly popular Instagram tastemaker who can help put them back on the map. And while the Hotel Nantucket appears to be a blissful paradise, complete with a celebrity chef-run restaurant and an idyllic wellness center, there's a lot of drama behind closed doors. The staff (and guests) have complicated pasts, and the hotel can't seem to overcome the bad reputation it earned in 1922 when a tragic fire killed nineteen-year-old chambermaid Grace Hadley. With Grace gleefully haunting the halls, a staff harboring all kinds of secrets, and Lizbet's own romantic uncertainty, is the Hotel Nantucket destined for success or doom? Filled with the emotional depth and multiple points of view that characterize Hilderbrand's novels (The Blue Bistro, Golden Girl) as well as an added dash of Roaring Twenties history, The Hotel Nantucket offers something for everyone in this compelling summer drama.

Book The Historical Archaeology of Shadow and Intimate Economies

Download or read book The Historical Archaeology of Shadow and Intimate Economies written by James A. Nyman and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing the important social relationships that form among people who participate in small-scale economic transactions, contributors to this volume explore often-overlooked networks of intimate and shadow economies—terms used to describe trade that takes place outside formal market systems. Case studies from a variety of historical contexts around the world reveal the ways such transactions created community and identity, subverted class and power relations, and helped people adapt to new social realities. In Maine, woven baskets sold by Native American artisans to Euroamerican consumers supported Native strategies for cultural survival and agency. Alcohol exchanged by Scandinavian merchants for furs and skins enabled their indigenous trading partners to expand social webs that contested colonialism. Moonshine production in Appalachia was an integral part of economic exchanges in isolated mountain communities. Caribbean and American plantations contain evidence of interactions, exchanges, and attachments between enslaved communities and poor whites that defied established racial boundaries. From brothel workers in Boston to seal hunters in Antarctica, the examples in this volume show how historical archaeologists can use the concept of intimate economies to uncover deeply meaningful connections that exist beyond the traditional framework of global capitalism.
