Book Beyond Birds and Bees

Download or read book Beyond Birds and Bees written by Bonnie J. Rough and published by Seal Press. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative inquiry into how we teach our children about bodies, sex, relationships and equality -- with revelatory, practical takeaways from the author's research and eye-opening observations from the world-famous Dutch approach Award-winning author Bonnie J. Rough never expected to write a book about sex, but life handed her a revelation too vital to ignore. As an American parent grappling with concerns about raising children in a society steeped in stereotypes and sexual shame, she couldn't quite picture how to teach the facts of life with a fearless, easygoing, positive attitude. Then a job change relocated her family to Amsterdam, where she soon witnessed the relaxed and egalitarian sexual attitudes of the Dutch. There, she discovered, children learn from babyhood that bodies are normal, the world's best sex ed begins in kindergarten, cooties are a foreign concept, puberty is no big surprise, and questions about sex are welcome at the dinner table. In Beyond Birds and Bees, Rough reveals how although normalizing human sexuality may sound risky, doing so actually prevents unintended consequences, leads to better health and success for our children, and lays the foundation for a future of gender equality. Exploring how the Dutch example translates to American life, Rough highlights a growing wave of ambitious American parents, educators, and influencers poised to transform sex ed -- and our society -- for the better, and shows how families everywhere can give a modern lift to the birds and bees. Down to earth and up to the minute with our profound new cultural conversations about gender, sex, power, autonomy, diversity, and consent, Rough's careful research and engaging storytelling illuminate a forward path for a groundbreaking generation of Americans who want clear examples and actionable steps for how to support children's sexual development -- and overall wellbeing -- from birth onward at home, in schools, and across our evolving culture.

Book Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer

Download or read book Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer written by Tammy Gold and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-01-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Childcare Bible—A Must-Have Whether You Have Occasional Sitters or a Full-Time Nanny Finding the right caregiver can be one of the most life-changing decisions a parent makes. Whether it's a kindly neighbor for the weekday latchkey hours, a teenage babysitter one night a week, or a full-time professional nanny, the right caregiver can enrich a child's world and literally grow her brain. Hire the wrong one, and this person could cause developmental delays and stress for the entire family. In her groundbreaking new book, Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer: A Practical Guide for Finding and Achieving the Gold Standard of Care for Your Child, nationally recognized parenting expert Tammy Gold draws from her extensive background in child developmental psychology, social work, and family therapy to offer the first childcare bible for parents. Knowing the impact caregivers have on children coupled with the unregulated often unknown world of in-home childcare workers, Gold has devoted her professional career, and now this book, to helping parents navigate through this important--and woefully overlooked--process. She arms parents with invaluable tools, tips, and insider secrets to finding the perfect caregiver-family match. Gold's Family Needs Assessment helps parents identify the traits and conditions that are "must-haves," added "pluses," or nonnegotiable "deal breakers." Parents can then use this list of qualities to quickly weed out unqualified candidates. She also details what to ask over the phone and in a face-to-face interview, how to structure a trial run (which she deems essential), and what to spell out in a Nanny-Family Work Agreement--another essential tool included in the book. Readers learn her "Nanny Speak 1-2-3" technique to help clarify and resolve issues with the caregiver in a productive, positive way. In addition to saving hours and energy, Parents will also discover as much about parenting as they will about finding a nanny. Secrets of the Nanny Whisperer is chock-full of parenting gems about children's developmental stages, ways to nurture and stimulate the child, and essential strategies for maintaining harmonious and high-functioning parent-child-caregiver relationships. This book is a must read for parents who want to create a happier, healthier and safer childcare experience for their child.

Book Keep Calm and Parent On

Download or read book Keep Calm and Parent On written by Emma Jenner and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a modern-day Mary Poppins and the former star of TLC’s Take Home Nanny comes a holistic and guilt-free approach to parenting children ages seven and under. Emma Jenner lives, teaches, and nannies by this philosophy: if parents are in control, they can enjoy their children more. And what could be more enjoyable than well- behaved, respectful, healthy, thriving kids? Keep Calm and Parent On effectively places parenting expert Emma Jenner on your shoulder, helping you see your child’s behavior from an objective standpoint that puts you firmly in charge. Each chapter opens with a checklist of questions to ask yourself when you run into a specific problem, whether it’s sleeping, nutrition, communication, manners, consequences, or self-esteem. Jenner then breaks down each checklist, explaining how bad behavior is really just a habit that needs to be corrected. By connecting the dots in all areas of your child’s life, you can understand why he or she is acting out—and how to fix it. For example, the best discipline techniques in the world won’t work if a child is sleep-deprived, and a child will not demonstrate good manners if communication is faulty and he doesn’t understand what’s expected of him. Each chapter also features handy sidebars, as well as instructive and memorable quizzes. A strong proponent of raising our expectations, Jenner shows how parents can do more by doing less for their children. With an interactive format and straightforward solutions, this invaluable guide is designed to give parents bite-size takeaways they can use immediately with their children. Jenner’s blend of British and American parenting styles is more than advice; it is proof that all children are capable of behaving—and that you have the keys to unlocking their potential.

Book Other People s Children

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Wrigley
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 1996-04-04
  • ISBN : 9780465053827
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Other People s Children written by Julia Wrigley and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1996-04-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When parents hire nannies, housekeepers, or au pairs, most think they are getting the best child care money can buy. But are they? When parents become employers, what does it mean for them, their children, and the nannies themselves? While parents may dream of Mary Poppins, seldom do they hire professional British nannies. Instead, most hire untrained women who have few other career options. Coming from different worlds, middle-class parents and their children's caregivers may not share a language - either literally or figuratively. Most parents do not know what their caregivers truly think about them, their young charges, or American child-rearing practices. Based on more than 150 interviews with caregivers and parents, this book explores the hidden side of caregiving relationships. Julia Wrigley asks how parents learn to be employers and why some fail at the task. The book is an unsparing examination of the poignant situations and conflicts that can arise when parents and caregivers share child rearing but little else. In their own words, caregivers tell of working long hours in aching isolation and boredom, asked to invest emotionally in children yet lacking any real authority over their charges. Parents tell of caregivers who disappear without warning or who define their jobs as "watching" children but not playing with them or helping them learn. The book examines parents' strategies to ensure that their children are raised according to their own values, even in their daily absence from the home. No strategy, however, can overcome all the problems created by unequal relationships within households. The book makes a compelling argument that professionally run child care centers better meet the needs of children and parents alike.

Book Narratology beyond the Human

Download or read book Narratology beyond the Human written by David Herman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To what extent, and in what manner, do storytelling practices accommodate nonhuman subjects and their modalities of experience, and how can contemporary narrative study shed light on interspecies interactions and entanglements? In Narratology beyond the Human, David Herman addresses these questions through a cross-disciplinary approach to post-Darwinian narratives concerned with animals and human-animal relationships. Herman considers the enabling and constraining effects of different narrative media, examining a range of fictional and nonfictional texts disseminated in print, comics and graphic novels, and film. In focusing on techniques such as the use of animal narrators, alternation between human and nonhuman perspectives, the embedding of stories within stories, and others, the book explores how specific strategies for portraying nonhuman agents both emerge from and contribute to broader attitudes toward animal life. Herman argues that existing frameworks for narrative inquiry must be modified to take into account how stories are interwoven with cultural ontologies, or understandings of what sorts of beings populate the world and how they relate to humans. Showing how questions of narrative bear on ideas of species difference and assumptions about animal minds, Narratology beyond the Human underscores our inextricable interconnectedness with other forms of creatural life and suggests that stories can be used to resituate imaginaries of human action in a more-than-human world.
