Download or read book History of Namibia written by Marion Wallace and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990 Namibia gained its independence after a decades-long struggle against South African rule--and, before that, against German colonialism. This book, the first new scholarly general history of Namibia in two decades, provides a fresh synthesis of these events, and of the much longer pre-colonial period. A History of Namibia opens with a chapter by John Kinahan covering the evidence of human activity in Namibia from the earliest times to the nineteenth century, and for the first time making a synthesis of current archaeological research widely available to non-specialists. In subsequent chapters, Marion Wallace weaves together the most up-to-date academic research (in English and German) on Namibian history, from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. She explores histories of migration, production and power in the pre-colonial period, the changes triggered by European expansion, and the dynamics of the period of formal colonialism. The coverage of German rule includes a full chapter on the genocide of 1904-8. Here, Wallace outlines the history and historiography of the wars fought in central and southern Namibia, and the subsequent mass imprisonment of defeated Africans in concentration camps. The final two chapters analyse the period of African nationalism, apartheid and war between 1946 and 1990. The book's conclusion looks briefly at the development of Namibia in the two decades since independence. A History of Namibia provides an invaluable introduction and reference source to the past of a country that is often neglected, despite its significance in the history of the region and, indeed, for that of European colonialism and international relations. It makes accessible the latest research on the country, illuminates current controversies, puts forward new insights, and suggests future directions for research. The book's extensive bibliography adds to its usefulness for scholar and general reader alike.

Book Imagining the Post Apartheid State

Download or read book Imagining the Post Apartheid State written by John T. Friedman and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In northwest Namibia, people’s political imagination offers a powerful insight into the post-apartheid state. Based on extensive anthropological fieldwork, this book focuses on the former South African apartheid regime and the present democratic government; it compares the perceptions and practices of state and customary forms of judicial administration, reflects upon the historical trajectory of a chieftaincy dispute in relation to the rooting of state power and examines everyday forms of belonging in the independent Namibian State. By elucidating the State through a focus on the social, historical and cultural processes that help constitute it, this study helps chart new territory for anthropology, and it contributes an ethnographic perspective to a wider set of interdisciplinary debates on the State and state processes.

Book Democracy and Education in Namibia and Beyond

Download or read book Democracy and Education in Namibia and Beyond written by M. Amukugo and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Namibian constitution makes full provision for education as a fundamental human right and freedom. Three years into independence, as part of the governments educational policy, the Education for All Policy was launched as a stepping stone to free quality education. However, inequities have become widely pronounced within the Namibian educational system. Democracy and Education in Namibia and beyond debates the educationdemocracy nexus in Namibia and the southern African context. It defines and explores the meaning of democracy and related concepts. It also looks at what democracy means in the context of human rights and access to education. The ten chapters in this collection interrogate the strengths and limitations of education as an instrument of social change and question whether or not the Namibian educational objectives and practices do develop and help to sustain a democratic culture in Namibia. The authors in the collection have drawn material from their own teaching and research experience across the fields of education and social science in Namibia and beyond, and present their findings in a pedagogical framework suitable as a challenging text for tertiary students. At a time when education is in crisis, especially in South Africa where strident calls for free tertiary education and Africanisation of the curriculum are spreading like wildfire, this book gives scholarly insight into the history and social conditions that gave rise to our current predicament.

Book International Law and the Protection of Namibia s Territorial Integrity

Download or read book International Law and the Protection of Namibia s Territorial Integrity written by S. Akweenda and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International law is not static; it develops constantly. Namibia is classic case, illustrating the changing law of nations. International Law and the Protection of Namibia's Territorial Integrity: Boundaries and Territorial Claims demonstrates this with an analysis of the legal and factual elements present in the creation, boundaries and territorial claims of Namibia, and the determinations of the League of Nations and the political organs of the United Nations which developed and clarified the rules of international law. Nambia's unique international status and diplomatic history requires the consideration of a large number of different topics within public international law. Some of these issues are very complex and technical, as they involve major questions of international law and politics. Through the use of primary sources, case law, state practice and the opinions of eminent jurists, the author addresses these challenging and revealing issues. Anyone interested in public international law, international relations, political science, history, or geography will appreciate the way that this work covers the interesting and informative changes in this revealing nation.
