Book Nag Hammadi Codices III 3 4 and V 1 with Papyrus Berolinensis 8502 3 and Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 1081 Eugnostos and the Sophia of Jesus Christ

Download or read book Nag Hammadi Codices III 3 4 and V 1 with Papyrus Berolinensis 8502 3 and Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 1081 Eugnostos and the Sophia of Jesus Christ written by Parrott and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugnostos and The Sophia of Jesus Christ (SJC) are two closely related tractates from the Nag Hammadi Coptic Gnostic Library and Papyrus Berolinensis 8502 (only SJC). Here they are presented parallel with each other because they are literarily related, i.e. most of Eugnostos is also found in SJC. Eugnostos is printed in its two Coptic copies (too close to be versions), plus the fragmentary remains of a Greek copy (all with translations). This the first publication of the edited text of Eugnostos from Nag Hammadi Codex V and the first time that all these texts have been presented in one volume. Eugnostos is a non-Christian speculative cosmogony that begins with the primal invisible One, moves on to the structuring of the invisible and visible aeons and concludes at the point where the creation of this world would occur. SJC is a revelation discourse of Christ with his disciples which makes use of the bulk of Eugnostos, and adds new emphases: e.g. the special role of Christ as revealer and savior, the imprisonment of the divine element in flesh, opposition in sexual intercourse, and the commissioning of the disciples. While Eugnostos lacks essential elements of the gnostic world-view, SJC is unquestionably gnostic. If one assumes the priority of Eugnostos, these tractates provide the clearest textual evidence available of a non-gnostic and non-Christian speculative system being transformed into a system that is both gnostic and Christian. An introduction, textual notes and indices are included.

Book Nag Hammadi Texts and the Bible

Download or read book Nag Hammadi Texts and the Bible written by C.A. Evans and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume places in synoptic form parallel texts from Nag Hammadi and from the Bible. This will enable scholars of Coptic Gnosticism, as well as scholars concerned with early Christian biblical interpretation, to make the comparisons necessary to determine relationships and what dependence, if any, there may be between these two bodies of material. This volume should facilitate the discussion concerning the origin, antiquity, and relationship of Gnosticism to Christianity. The volume also contains an extensive bibliography of materials relevant to this topic. Finally, a Scripture index will make it possible for the reader to find quickly any desired passage.

Book P Beatty III P47 The Codex Its Scribe and Its Text

Download or read book P Beatty III P47 The Codex Its Scribe and Its Text written by Peter Malik and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient works were preserved by means of handwritten copies, critical enquiry into their texts necessitates the study of such copies. In P.Beatty III (P47): The Codex, Its Scribe, and Its Text, Peter Malik focuses on the earliest extensive copy of the Book of Revelation. Integrating matters of palaeography, codicology, and scribal practice with textual analysis, Malik sheds new light on this largely neglected, yet crucially important, early Christian papyrus. Notable contributions include a new proposed date for P47, identification of several previously unreported scribal corrections, as well as the discovery of the manuscript’s close affinity with the Sahidic version. Significantly, Malik’s detailed, data-rich analyses are accompanied by a fresh transcription and, for the first time, high-resolution colour photographs of the manuscript.

Book The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis Book II and III

Download or read book The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis Book II and III written by Epiphanius of Salamis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epiphanius, bishop of Salamis on Cyprus from about 367 until 402, was a witness to and participant in the troubled era after the Council of Nicaea. His Panarion, or "Medicine Chest," is an historical encyclopedia of ideas and movements he considered heretical, and of the replies Christians ought to make to them. Book II and III deal with the Trinity, the Person of Christ, the divinity and personality of the Holy Spirit, Manichaeism, penance, matrimony and celibacy, monastic regulations, the Christian Calendar, all hotly contested topics in the fourth century. Book I, issued by Brill in 1987, concerns Gnosticism and Jewish Christianity. Together, the two volumes are the only complete translation of the Panarion in a modern language.

Book Proclus and the Chaldean Oracles

Download or read book Proclus and the Chaldean Oracles written by Nicola Spanu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the discussion of the Chaldean Oracles in the work of Proclus, as well as offering a translation and commentary of Proclus’ Treatise On Chaldean Philosophy. Spanu assesses whether Proclus’ exegesis of the Chaldean Oracles can be used by modern research to better clarify the content of Chaldean doctrine or must instead be abandoned because it represents a substantial misinterpretation of originary Chaldean teachings. The volume is augmented by Proclus’ Greek text, with English translation and commentary. Proclus and the Chaldean Oracles will be of interest to researchers working on Neoplatonism, Proclus and theurgy in the ancient world.
