Book excerpt: Since their discovery, the taxonomy and systematics of Australia's myxomycetes, an important yet cryptic group of microorganisms, not been published in Australia in a comprehensive manner, until now. Myxomycetes are now considered to be profoundly different from the 'true' fungi and recent publications place them within their own group. Slime Moulds: Myxomycetes of Australia is a synthesis of knowledge that provides a broad scale overview of virtually all of the approximately 340 currently described species of Australia's myxomycetes, including their life cycle, morphological features, distribution, ecology and history of research. Individual chapters provide dichotomous keys, descriptions, illustrations and photos for numerous taxa.

Book The Myxomycetes of Britain and Ireland

Download or read book The Myxomycetes of Britain and Ireland written by Bruce Ing and published by University of Chester. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic work and the first to comprehensively study this interesting life form, which has an important role in decomposing plant material. Myxomycetes (slime moulds) were once considered a special group of fungi. However they are now grouped within Amoebozoa as unicellular protists that adopt a multicellular aggregate form in certain conditions. Introductory chapters cover life-history, structure, ecology, distribution, how to find and collect material, bark culture techniques, microscopic examination, and herbarium storage of ‘slime-moulds’. The detailed accounts cover identification, keys, descriptions and illustrations. They also include notes on differences from other similar species. This is a reprint of the enlarged 2020 edition with a 20-page supplement including new species, together with 54 colour photos. It is a guide to the British and Irish species, including keys, descriptions, and illustrations showing the diagnostic features along with introductory chapters on life history, structure, ecology and distribution, collecting, techniques, and preservation.

Book excerpt: This densely-packed book introduces the fascinating world of myxomycetes, the acellular slime moulds. It describes their intriguing life cycle and important ecological roles as decomposers, nutrient recyclers and food for numerous invertebrates. And it reveals their exquisite evocative forms through microscope and camera, along with time lapse images that capture the dramatic changes in colour and shape as the fruiting bodies mature. The past ten years has seen a burgeoning interest in slime moulds by photographers, students and enthusiasts who are captivated by their singular beauty. This popular and informative book-now in its fourth edition-is an aid to their identification, an illustrated glossary, and an account of a passion for slime moulds that has led to the discovery of a wealth of species inhabiting a tall wet eucalypt forest in central north Tasmania.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neither plants, nor animals, nor fungi, the myxomycetes are a surprisingly diverse and fascinating group of organisms. They spend the majority of their life out of sight as single-celled amoeboid individuals in leaf litter, soil or decaying wood, foraging for bacteria and other simple life forms. However, when conditions are right, two individual cells come together to give rise to a much larger, creeping structure called a plasmodium, which produces the even more complex and often beautiful fruiting bodies. Indeed, the fruiting bodies of myxomycetes are often miniature works of art! Their small size (usually only a few millimetres tall) and fleeting fruiting phase mean that these organisms, although ubiquitous and sometimes abundant, are overlooked by most people. However, recent research by a few dedicated individuals has shown that Australia has a very diverse myxomycete biota with more than 330 species, the largest number known for any region of the Southern Hemisphere. This comprehensive monograph provides keys, descriptions and information on the known distribution for all of these species in addition to containing introductory material relating to their biology and ecology. Many species are illustrated, showing the diversity of their fruiting bodies, and greatly facilitating their identification. This book will give naturalists a new insight into an often overlooked group of organisms in addition to providing an incentive to search for the many species which have undoubtedly thus far escaped notice.

Book Systematics and Evolution

Download or read book Systematics and Evolution written by David J. McLaughlin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes treatments of systematics and related topics for both fungi and fungus-like organisms in four eukaryotic supergroups, as well as specialized chapters on nomenclature, techniques and evolution. These organisms are of great interest to mycologists, plant pathologists and others, including those interested in the animal parasitic Microsporidia. Our knowledge of the systematics and evolution of fungi has made great strides since the first edition of this volume, largely driven by molecular phylogenetic analyses. Consensus among mycologists has led to a stable systematic treatment that has since become widely adopted and is incorporated into this second edition, along with a great deal of new information on evolution and ecology. The systematic chapters cover occurrence, distribution, economic importance, morphology and ultrastructure, development of taxonomic theory, classification and maintenance and culture. Other chapters deal with nomenclatural changes necessitated by revisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants, including the elimination of separate names for asexual states, as well as methods for preservation of cultures and specimens, character evolution and methods for ultrastructural study, the fungal fossil record and the impact of whole genomes on fungal studies.

Book Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture

Download or read book Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture written by Andrew Adamatzky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The slime mould Physarum polycephalum was a source of explosive growth of bioengineered hybrid sensing and computing devices in the past decade. Being in its vegetative state, the plasmodium, the slime mould configures its protoplasmic network to optimize its geometry with relation to patterns of attractants and repellents. The slime mould’s adaptability, polymorphism and aestheticism inspired artists and architects. The slime mould has been seen as a self-conscious liquid form continuously changing its shape in response to external stimulation and due to interactions of thousands of micro-oscillators in its body. Elusiveness is a magic feature of the slime mould. One moment the slime mould gives you a solution to a mathematical problem by a shape of its body, next moment it changes its shape and the solution ,disappears.Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture presents a set of unique chapters written by leading artists, architects and scientists, which resulted from creative translations of the slime mould behaviour into forms and sounds, unconventional investigations and sensorial experiences and the slime mould ability to remove boundaries between living and artificial, solid and fluid, science and arts. The book gives readers unique tools for designing architectural forms and creative works using the slime mould, understanding how pro-cognitive living substrates can be used in everyday life, it sparks new ideas and initiates further progress in many fields or arts, architecture, science and engineering.
