Book Wigwam Stories Told by North American Indians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wigwam Stories Told by North American Indians Classic Reprint written by Mary Catherine Judd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wigwam Stories Told by North American Indians These stories, told by and about the Indians, have been gathered from various sources. They show, among other interesting facts, that the love of the beautiful, and also of the humorous, dwells in the heart of the wild Indian. There are no adaptations from Longfellow's poem of Hiawatha, but the compiler has gone directly to the works of Schoolcraft, whose writings were Longfellow's inspiration. Schoolcraft's Journal states his belief that Menabozho and Hiawatha were one and the same person, the latter name being preferred as more musical. Hence, Longfellow chose it as the name of his Indian hero. Horatio Hale and other authorities on Iroquois history differ strongly from Schoolcraft on this point, and maintain that the name of Hiawatha, or Hey-anwatha, refers only to an Iroquois statesman or deity. Menabozho, or The Foolish One, is very real to the Chippewa or Ojibway Indian of Minnesota. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Algonquin Legends of New England

Download or read book The Algonquin Legends of New England written by Charles G. Leland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Algonquin Legends of New England: Or Myths and Folk Lore of the Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot Tribes This work, then, contains a collection of the myths, legends, and folk-lore of the principal Wabanaki, or Northeastern Algonquin, Indians; that is to say, of the Passamaquoddies and Penobscots of Maine, and of the Micmacs of New Brunswick. All of this mate rial was gathered directly from Indian narrators, the greater part by myself, the rest by a few friends; in fact, I can give the name of the aboriginal authority for every tale except one. As my chief object has been simply to collect and preserve valuable material, I have said little of the labors of such critical writers as Brinton, Hale, Trumbull, Powers, Morgan, Ban croft, and the many more who have so ably studied and set forth red Indian ethnology. If I have rarely ventured on their field, it is because I believe that when the Indian shall have passed away there will come far better ethnologists than I am, who will be much more obliged to me for collecting raw material than for cooking it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Algic Researches, Vol. 1 of 2: Comprising Inquiries Respecting the Mental Characteristics of the North American Indians; First Series, Indian Tales and Legends Sir, The position taken by you in favour of the literary susceptibilities of the Indian character, and your tasteful and meritorious attempts in imbodying their manners and customs, in the shape of poetic fiction, has directed my thoughts to you in submitting my collection of their oral fictions to the press. Few have given attention to the intellectual traits and distinctive opinions of these scattered branches of the human family, without finding the subject interesting and absorbing. But in an age of multifarious excitement, in which topic after topic, and invention after invention, have poured in upon us with an almost overwhelming rapidity, the interest felt on the subject, and the tribes themselves, and their strong claims to attention, have been thrown into the background and nearly lost sight of.
