This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining philosophy, science, and literature, Mythic Worlds and the One You Can Believe In examines lingering misconceptions of world history as a continuing source of international tension. Awareness of the natural continuum, currently gauged at some 13.8 billion years overall, disarms sectarian zealotry and, in retrospect, explains some of the difficulties the literary and philosophical traditions have had in accommodating their beliefs to what undeniably exists. To this day, beliefs incompatible with natural history continue to intensify nationalism and support terrorist movements. As a work mainly in natural philosophy, this book uses the consensus natural continuum to critique the more prominent and durable misconceptions.

Book White Mythic Space

  • ISBN : 3110729369

Download or read book White Mythic Space written by Stefan Aguirre Quiroga and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fall of 2016 saw the release of the widely popular First World War video game Battlefield 1. Upon the game's initial announcement and following its subsequent release, Battlefield 1 became the target of an online racist backlash that targeted the game's inclusion of soldiers of color. Across social media and online communities, players loudly proclaimed the historical inaccuracy of black soldiers in the game and called for changes to be made that correct what they considered to be a mistake that was influenced by a supposed political agenda. Through the introduction of the theoretical framework of the ‘White Mythic Space’, this book seeks to investigate the reasons behind the racist rejection of soldiers of color by Battlefield 1 players in order to answer the question: Why do individuals reject the presence of people of African descent in popular representations of history?

Book Material Mystery

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karmen MacKendrick
  • Publisher : Fordham University Press
  • Release : 2021-08-17
  • ISBN : 0823294560
  • Pages : 135 pages

Download or read book Material Mystery written by Karmen MacKendrick and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Mystery considers three apparently anthropocentric myths that are central to Abrahamic religions—those of the primal human, the incarnated and possibly divine redeemer, and the resurrected body. At first glance, these stories reinforce a human-centered theology and point to a very anthropomorphic God. Taking them seriously seems to ignore the material turn in the humanities entirely, with the same sort of willful ignorance that some of our politicians show in declaring that their myths count as facts, or that the point of the rest of the world is to further human consumption. But it is possible, Karmen MacKendrick shows, to read these figures through a particular tradition that emerges from the Hebrew Bible, the tradition of Wisdom as a creative force. Wisdom texts are common across the ancient Near East. As the idea of creative Wisdom develops from antiquity into the middle ages, it gathers philosophical influences from a range of philosophical traditions. This exuberantly promiscuous impurity—intellectual, artistic, and theological—generates new interpretive possibilities. In these interpretations, each human-like figure opens up onto the world''s matter, as an interdependent part of it, and matter is thoroughly mixed with divinity. Such mythic readings complement our factual, scientific understanding of the material world, to engage wider kinds of knowing and affective attention—particularly Wisdom''s combination of care and delight.

Book Transforming World Politics

Download or read book Transforming World Politics written by Anna M. Agathangelou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical understanding of contemporary world politics by arguing that the neoliberal approach to international relations seduces many of us into investing our lives in projects of power and alienation. These projects offer few options for emancipation; consequently, many feel they have little choice but to retaliate against violence with more violence. The authors of this pioneering work articulate worldism as an alternative approach to world politics. It intertwines non-Western and Western traditions by drawing on Marxist, postcolonial, feminist and critical security approaches with Greek and Chinese theories of politics, broadly defined. The authors contend that contemporary world politics cannot be understood outside the legacies of these multiple worlds, including axes of power configured by gender, race, class, and nationality, which are themselves linked to earlier histories of colonizations and their contemporary formations. With fiction and poetry as exploratory methods, the authors build on their ‘multiple worlds’ approach to consider different sites of world politics, arguing that a truly emancipatory understanding of world politics requires more than just a shift in ways of thinking; above all, it requires a shift in ways of being. Transforming World Politics will be of vital interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Political Science, Postcolonial Studies, Social Theory, Women's Studies, Asian Studies, European Union and Mediterranean Studies, and Security Studies.

Book Mythic Discourses

  • Publisher : Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura
  • Release : 2012-12-31
  • ISBN : 9522227633
  • Pages : 487 pages

Download or read book Mythic Discourses written by Frog and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mythic discourses in the present day show how vernacular heritage continues to function and be valuable through emergent interpretations and revaluations. At the same time, continuities in mythic images, motifs, myths and genres reveal the longue durée of mythologies and their transformations. The eighteen articles of Mythic Discourses address the many facets of myth in Uralic cultures, from the Finnish and Karelian world-creation to Nenets shamans, offering multidisciplinary perspectives from twenty eastern and western scholars. The mythologies of Uralic peoples differ so considerably that mythology is approached here in a broad sense, including myths proper, religious beliefs and associated rituals. Traditions are addressed individually, typologically, and in historical perspective. The range and breadth of the articles, presenting diverse living mythologies, their histories and relationships to traditions of other cultures such as Germanic and Slavic, all come together to offer a far richer and more developed perspective on Uralic traditions than any one article could do alone.

Book Writing Tricksters

Download or read book Writing Tricksters written by Jeanne Rosier Smith and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Brilliant. Smith shows us how to bridge and link authors into an understanding of contemporary American literature that occupies shared ground, yet she insists on the imperative of educating ourselves in many U.S. traditions. The result is a book that meets the extremely difficult challenge of working multiculturally without either erasing or overdetermining difference. This discussion will have applications well beyond the group of authors discussed here."--Elizabeth Ammons, coeditor of Tricksterism in Turn-of-the-Century American Literature: A Multicultural Perspective "Transcultural and thoroughly documented, this study of contemporary ethnic texts by women is comparative in the most scholarly sense. No reader of modern American fiction could argue against its trickster premises: the power to laugh at old worlds, and invent new ones."--Kenneth Lincoln, author of Indi'n Humor: Bicultural Play in Native America "Communicates keen insights on fictional techniques and cultural themes in clear, elegant and jargon-free language. I believe that this study will serve as an excellent model for future multicultural literary criticism."--Bonnie TuSmith, author of All My Relatives "Highly accessible to a diverse audience, Writing Tricksters forces readers to examine the power of storytelling traditions to cultural and individual survival. Smith's cross-cultural discussion of the trickster is right on the cusp of an important, evolving analytical direction."--Alanna Kathleen Brown, Montana State University "Few scholars have attempted to find the lines of contact and connection between ethnic writers. Writing Tricksters is fresh and original, an important addition to the growing corpus of truly multicultural critical texts."--Joseph Skerrett, coeditor of Memory, Narrative, and Identity
