Download or read book Hasidism as Mysticism written by Rivka Schatz Uffenheimer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offered here for the first time in English translation, Hasidism as Mysticism is a classic in its field. Using the tools of phenomenology, Rivka Schatz Uffenheimer places Hasidism squarely in the context of religious studies. Hasidism's theoretical texts have been largely ignored by historians of the movement, but Schatz Uffenheimer analyzes these materials fully, disclosing the mystical, quietistic tendencies that existed alongside Hasidism's more activist, popular elements. The author carefully reviewed this translation of her work; it includes a revised introduction with much new material, two new chapters, and an appendix containing a translation, history, and literary analysis of one of the few extant texts attributed to the Baal Shem Tov. Schatz Uffenheimer's inquiry covers the full gamut of Hasidic life and thought, embracing such topics as the emphasis on joy and the concomitant ban on sadness and regret in Hasidism, the focus on contemplative rather than petitionary prayer, the subordination of the mizvot (commandments) to the spiritualistic goal of devequt (attachment to God), and the anarchic elements of Hasidism's approach to life within society. Also discussed are the problematic role of Torah study resulting from this spiritualistic emphasis, the movement's neutralization or internalization of the traditional concept of a historical messiah, and the transformation within Hasidism of traditional concepts borrowed from Kabbalah. The author's illuminating hints as to the affinity between Hasidism and Christian Quietism should be of particular interest to scholars in the field. Rivka Schatz Uffenheimer (1927-1992) was the Edmonton Community Professor of Jewish Mysticism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. One of the outstanding students of Gershom Scholem, she forged her own path in the world of scholarship. Her research encompassed a wide range of areas: Zohar and Lurianic Kabbalah, Sabbatianism, Hasidism, and the typology of Jewish messianism. In addition, she was deeply involved in the ongoing discussion concerning the major spiritual and existential issues confronting contemporary Judaism and the State of Israel. Book Chassidism a Resum of Modern Hebrew Mysticism

Download or read book Chassidism a Resum of Modern Hebrew Mysticism written by Isaiah Wassilevsky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chassidism a Resumé of Modern Hebrew Mysticism Everyone acknowledges, though few acknowledge quite willingly, the services rendered to European culture, in modern times, by the Jewish race. Dispersed through many countries, and subject in some of them to grave disabilities, the Modern Jew, using English, French, German, Russian, or the universal language of music or of marble, has impressed himself upon western civilisation with an energy and success almost directly in proportion to the rigour of the legal and social obstacles placed in his path. To a vast number of Englishmen and Frenchmen today, Heine stands for German poetry. If any injustice be done to the immense and varied contributions of the Jewish intellect to our science, our literature, our erudition, or our art, it is not that they are overlooked, but rather that they are insisted on with an excessive and malicious emphasis. There is one aspect of modern Jewish activity, however, which has so completely escaped this general recognition that for the mass of educated Europeans it hardly exists at all. The singular aptitude with which the Jew masters the usages as well as the languages of the Gentiles, and the sordid and unlovely qualities - one must add - which he often develops in the process, easily blinds us to the richness and beauty of the traditions which he inherits as a member of the Jewish community itself. Heine's Prinzessin Sabbath and the Mordicai scenes in Daniel Deronda cast a gracious and tender revealing light upon the Jewish home. But no George Eliot has given the Gentile world at large any adequate impression of the extent and significance of the literature written in modern times by Jews, in their own language, for one another. Hebrew - a language of ritual - is also, and has never ceased to be, a living speech, actively cultivated, in prose and verse, by distinguished scholars, journalists, novelists, and poets, especially in Germany and Russia. Book Phenomenology and Mysticism

Download or read book Phenomenology and Mysticism written by Anthony J. Steinbock and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the first-person narratives of three figures from the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic mystical traditions—St. Teresa of Avila, Rabbi Dov Baer, and Rūzbihān Baqlī—Anthony J. Steinbock provides a complete phenomenology of mysticism based in the Abrahamic religious traditions. He relates a broad range of religious experiences, or verticality, to philosophical problems of evidence, selfhood, and otherness. From this philosophical description of vertical experience, Steinbock develops a social and cultural critique in terms of idolatry—as pride, secularism, and fundamentalism—and suggests that contemporary understandings of human experience must come from a fuller, more open view of religious experience.
