Book Mining the Asteroid Belts

  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Mining the Asteroid Belts written by Martin K Ettington and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First of all, why is the title of this book about mining Asteroid Belts? When we learned about the Asteroid Belt when studying the Solar System in school there was only one Asteroid Belt. The one in orbit between Mars and Jupiter. With the discovery of the Trojan Asteroids in Jovian orbit and in orbit ahead and behind of the planet Jupiter, we now have more than one belt of asteroids around the Sun. If we include the Kuiper Belt out beyond Pluto, there are many additional thousands of asteroids to consider. There are also near Earth Asteroids which orbit close to and sometimes hit our planet. So there are many thousands of Asteroids in the Solar System and this book is focused on how do we get to them, live on them, and mine them. There are several known types of Asteroids, and the metal ones have the most promise to provide rare materials to fuel Earth's industries. Also, how would these metals be processed and sent back to Earth? What would traveling to and living on Asteroids be like? And what life support systems would be needed?

Book Mystery of the Moon s Origin

Download or read book Mystery of the Moon s Origin written by Abubakr Hassan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant theory of the moon's origin is the Giant Impact Hypothesis, which states that the moon formed when a Mars-sized object - named Theia - impacted the proto-Earth early in the solar system's formation, with the resulting material contributing to the formation of the Moon. Using models of planetary development and the solar system's formation, we attempt to answer where the impactor - Theia - might have originated from. We conclude that the Asteroid belt is a likely location for Theia's formation, and we find that the parameters associated with this point of origin may help advance other models of the Moon's formation.

Book The Mars Mystery

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham Hancock
  • Publisher : Crown
  • Release : 2010-08-11
  • ISBN : 0307557790
  • Pages : 472 pages

Download or read book The Mars Mystery written by Graham Hancock and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An asteroid transformed Mars from a lush planet with rivers and oceans into a bleak and icy hell. Is Earth condemned to the same fate, or can we protect ourselves and our planet from extinction? In his most riveting and revealing book yet, Graham Hancock examines the evidence that the barren Red Planet was once home to a lush environment of flowing rivers, lakes, and oceans. Could Mars have sustained life and civilization? Megaliths found on the parched shores of Cydonia, a former Martian ocean, mirror the geometrical conventions of the pyramids at Egypt's Giza necropolis. Especially startling is a Sphinx-like structure depicting a face with distinguishable diadem, teeth, mouth and an Egyptian-style headdress. Might there be a connection between the structures of Egypt and those of Mars? Why does NASA continue to dismiss these remarkable anomalies as "a trick of light"? Hancock points to the intriguing possibility that ancient Martian civilization is communicating with us through the remarkable structures it left behind. In exploring the possible traces left by the Martian civilization and the cosmic cataclysm that may have ended it, The Mars Mystery is both an illumination of our ancient past and a warning--that we still have time to heed--about our ultimate fate.

Book Seven Wonders of Asteroids Comets and Meteors

Download or read book Seven Wonders of Asteroids Comets and Meteors written by Ron Miller and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From earliest times, humans have wondered about the sky above them and have studied all visible objects. People began to identify differences between stars and planets, and as technology advanced with telescopes and space probes, they sought deeper understanding of the millions of bits of debris rocketing through the solar system. Scientists determined that most of these objects are left over from the creation of the planets and their moons. They classified these leftovers into categories such as asteroids, comets, and meteors. In this book, we'll explore seven wonders of asteroids, comets, and meteors. Ceres is a huge mountain-sized asteroid that orbits with other asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. Other marvels include Ganymede, the largest asteroid in the group called Earthgrazers or Near-Earth Objects, and Halley's comet, a ball of ice, that passes Earth every seventy-five or so years. We'll also explore the amazing impact that space debris can have on planets and moons. The Borealis Basin, a wondrous crater more than 5,000 miles across, formed when an asteroid collided with Mars in the ancient past. Then we will travel to the far-off Kuiper belt, where as many as 200 million icy bodies orbit, and wonder at the mystery of planetlike objects, such as Pluto and Charon. Finally, we’ll can experience a space wonder firsthand by standing outside on a night in August to watch the spectacular Perseid meteor shower fill the sky.

Book Cosmic Impact

  • Author : Andrew May
  • Publisher : Icon Books
  • Release : 2019-02-07
  • ISBN : 1785784943
  • Pages : 116 pages

Download or read book Cosmic Impact written by Andrew May and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As end-of-the-world scenarios go, an apocalyptic collision with an asteroid or comet is the new kid on the block, gaining respectability only in the last decade of the 20th century with the realisation that the dinosaurs had been wiped out by just such an impact. Now the science community is making up for lost time, with worldwide efforts to track the thousands of potentially hazardous near-Earth objects, and plans for high-tech hardware that could deflect an incoming object from a collision course – a procedure depicted, with little regard for scientific accuracy, in several Hollywood movies. Astrophysicist and science writer Andrew May disentangles fact from fiction in this fast-moving and entertaining account, covering the nature and history of comets and asteroids, the reason why some orbits are more hazardous than others, the devastating local and global effects that an impact event would produce, and – more optimistically – the way future space missions could avert a catastrophe.
