Book excerpt: There are mysteries in the woods of the Hudson Valley of New York and northern New Jersey. Download or read book Strange Stones written by Peter Hessler and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full of unforgettable figures and an unrelenting spirit of adventure, Strange Stones is a far-ranging, thought-provoking collection of Peter Hessler’s best reportage—a dazzling display of the powerful storytelling, shrewd cultural insight, and warm sense of humor that are the trademarks of his work. Over the last decade, as a staff writer for The New Yorker and the author of three books, Peter Hessler has lived in Asia and the United States, writing as both native and knowledgeable outsider in these two very different regions. This unusual perspective distinguishes Strange Stones, which showcases Hessler’s unmatched range as a storyteller. “Wild Flavor” invites readers along on a taste test between two rat restaurants in South China. One story profiles Yao Ming, basketball star and China’s most beloved export, another David Spindler, an obsessive and passionate historian of the Great Wall. In “Dr. Don,” Hessler writes movingly about a small-town pharmacist and his relationship with the people he serves. While Hessler’s subjects and locations vary, subtle but deeply important thematic links bind these pieces—the strength of local traditions, the surprising overlap between apparently opposing cultures, and the powerful lessons drawn from individuals who straddle different worlds.

Book The Lost City of the Monkey God

Download or read book The Lost City of the Monkey God written by Douglas Preston and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller, named one of the best books of the year by The Boston Globe and National Geographic: acclaimed journalist Douglas Preston takes readers on a true adventure deep into the Honduran rainforest in this riveting narrative about the discovery of a lost civilization -- culminating in a stunning medical mystery. Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change everything: lidar, a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but an enigmatic, lost civilization. Venturing into this raw, treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful wilderness to confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, disease-carrying insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. But it wasn't until they returned that tragedy struck: Preston and others found they had contracted in the ruins a horrifying, sometimes lethal-and incurable-disease. Suspenseful and shocking, filled with colorful history, hair-raising adventure, and dramatic twists of fortune, THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD is the absolutely true, eyewitness account of one of the great discoveries of the twenty-first century.

Book A Wirral Megalithic Mystery

  • Author : David Gregg
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2018-01-02

  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book A Wirral Megalithic Mystery written by David Gregg and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an ancient mystery story. The Wirral peninsula in the county of Cheshire, just north of ancient Chester, is well known for its Viking and Roman history but artifacts going back to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, such as ritual stone axes and flint arrow heads are also known.Yet no other signs of these early occupants have been recognised...until now.Professor Gregg following clues found by students of old maps, has discovered that at three sites these people designed and constructed great circles and arrays of standing stones using geometrical rules familiar from later European medieval cathedrals. At Saxon Overchurch the ancient chapel stands on a raised platform of earlier date. The platform in turn is surrounded by a great circle, 8 stones of which still survived in the 19th century. That circle is over 1100 ft across and hosted an inscribed hexagon. The professor shows that the probability of chance creating this geometry is minute. Here is the mystery: the position and dimensions of the Saxon and later Norman and medieval church are simply related to the design of the platform and to the great stone circle. There appears to be continuity of design from the Neolithic to the medieval period. The professor explains why this is not so unexpected. Even more remarkable a little to the south at Arrowe Park there once stood two larger concentric circles involving a dozen stones. The inner circle which also hosted a hexagon, was over 2000 ft across. As at Overchurch the proportions of the circles show familiar patterns involving prime roots, phi and pi.Again the professor shows that a chance explanation is out of the question. The geometry is so striking that he investigates the possibility of a 19th century hoax by a Druid obsessed antiquarian landowner. He shows that a hoax is very unlikely. These results are so surprising the skeptical reader may require further evidence. To provide it the professor analyses a third Wirral site. Near the ancient village of Bidston he describes a regular, organised array of 42 stones over 1250 ft long by 800 ft wide. The array has interesting and familiar geometry and as at Overchurch and Arrowe Park that geometry leads to alignments involving 3 or more stones which point to rising and setting points of the Sun and Moon on the local horizon. Major events such as midsummer sunrise are marked by several alignments. Also notable are markers for the pagan cross quarter day festivals of Imbolc, Beltain, Lughnasadh and Samhain which were adopted by the Christian church. It is this continuity of calendrical events from pagan through to Christian times which explains the strange design links at Overchurch spanning the millennia.Professor Gregg reminds us that Pope Gregory the Great himself instructed St. Augustine to adopt the temples of the heathens and rededicate them to Christ and the saints. Overchurch may be a classic example of the results of that policy in Britain. The three ancient sites described in this short book, if the analyses here are confirmed by further field work and research, may be as important as Stonehenge and Avebury. The Arrowe Park circles, for example, far exceed Avebury and all other known stone circles in diameter. The sites are currently unprotected and have already suffered from housing and road developments. It is time to take action to save what may remain.

Book Spirits in Stone

Download or read book Spirits in Stone written by Glenn Kreisberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking study of ceremonial stone landscapes in Northeast America and their relationship to other sites around the world • Features a comprehensive field guide to hundreds of megalithic stone structures in northeastern America, including cairns, perched boulders, and effigies • Details the Wall of Manitou, the Hammonasset Line, landscape astronomy along the Hudson River, and a several-acre area in Woodstock, NY, with large, carefully constructed lithic formations • Analyzes the archaeoastronomy, archaeoacoustics, and symbolism of these sites to reveal their relationships to other ceremonial stone sites across America and the world Presenting a comprehensive field guide to hundreds of lost, forgotten, and misidentified megalithic stone structures in northeastern America, Glenn Kreisberg documents many enigmatic formations still standing across the Catskill Mountain and Hudson Valley region, complete with functioning solstice and equinox alignments. Kreisberg provides a first-person description of the “Wall of the Manitou,” which runs for 10 miles along the eastern slopes of the Catskill Mountains, as well as narratives about related sites that include animal effigies, reproductive organs, calendar stones, enigmatic inscriptions, and evidence of alignments. Using computer software, he plots the trajectory of the Hammonasset Line, which begins at a burial complex near the tip of Long Island and runs to Devil’s Tombstone in Greene County, New York. He shows how the line runs at the same angle that marks the summer solstice sunset from Montauk Point on Long Island, and, when extended, intersects the ancient copper mines of Isle Royal in Upper Michigan. He documents a several-acre area on Overlook Mountain in Woodstock, New York, with a grouping of very large, carefully constructed lithic formations that together create a serpent or snake figure, mirroring the constellation Draco. He demonstrates how this site is related to the Serpent Mount in Ohio and Ankor Wat in Cambodia and reveals how all of the vast, interlocking sites in the Northeast were part of an ancient spiritual landscape based on a sophisticated understanding of the cosmos, as practiced by ancient Native Americans. While modern historians consider these sites to be colonial era constructions, Kreisberg reveals how they were used to communicate with the spirit world and may be remnants of a long-vanished civilization.

Book excerpt: Mythical Ireland embodies the search for a soul among Ireland's ancient ruins, and is an attempt to retrieve something of deeper import from 5,000-year-old megalithic monuments and their associated myths. The book represents a fascinating and engaging journey through time, landscape and the human spirit. Dealing with archaeology, interpretive mythography, cosmology and cosmogony, the book attempts to grapple with a core meaning, something beyond the functional interpretations of academia. In this revised and expanded edition, Anthony Murphy delves further into the many enthralling aspects of this journey. Just how much knowledge did locals have of the secrets of Newgrange before it was excavated? Who is the Cailleach, the ancient hag goddess whose image is ubiquitous in the ancient landscape? What happened to make Ireland's Stonehenge disappear from the landscape? Who were the first kings of Tara? What were the indigenous Irish myths about the Milky Way? Did someone try to steal the Tara Brooch? Why are there myths in Ireland about flooded towns and cities? Lavishly illustrated with exquisite photographs of the Irish landscape and ancient monuments, Mythical Ireland represents a personal and yet universal journey, a quest to reimagine the shrines as empowering and transformative sacred places. Murphy invokes the druids and poets of the Boyne and thus the sídhe of the ancient texts are reawakened for a modern and turbulent world.
