Book Myrtle and Myrrh Classic Reprint

Download or read book Myrtle and Myrrh Classic Reprint written by Ameen Rihani and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-18 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Myrtle and Myrrh The stranger at thy gate, hailing from the Orient, holds out to thee a gaunt and tatooed hand. This hand has often made mud-pies from earth that might have once mapped out the stars; or, in a drunken vision, heard the grum blings of a god and made of them a captivating creed: the brain of an ancient Assyrian astron omer; the spine of a Semitic sage; the cheeks of a Jezebel or a St. Takla; the heart of a slave that added beauty and horror to the chariot of a Babylonian king or a Roman conqueror: any or all of these might have besmeared this hand. Wilt thou take it? The hand of a personified illusion, of an exiled dream, of an Oriental who makes himself thy guest. He comes not to preach Buddhism to thee; nor Mohammedanism; nor Babyism; nor any other ism made picturesque and alluring by red caftans, white turbans, blue sashes and amber gris-scented lies. The only message he brings from his vine crowned and pine-girdled Mother to bewitch ing and enriching America is that of love and longing and lacrimal. He came from the Mountains of Lebanon, from under the shadow of the Acropolis of Baalbak, to learn from the Yankees the way to do things - the way to rise and ourish and expand; or, as they put it, the way to get there and be it - from a mundane point of view, of course. It has been observed. However, that the spots of a leopard are irre movable; and so is the lethargy of an Oriental. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountains of Myrrh: Reflections on the Sacred Passion These pages, treating in a simple meditative manner of the sufierings of our Blessed Saviour, have already appeared in The Messenger of the Sacred Heart. They are now published in per manent form with the hope of increasing a love for the Sacred Passion. Spiritual writers tell us that the ordinary food of the fervent soul is a devotion to our Lord's sufferings; while the author of The Following of Christ says that there are more lovers of our Lord in His glory on Mount Thabor than in His agony and humili ation on Mount Calvary. In any case we can rest assured that in moments of pain and anguish, -and truly there are many such in all lives, - nothing can be more helpful, nothing more consoling, than to know and remember that our Blessed Master endured pain and sorrow for our sake; and that pain and sorrow bravely and patiently borne make us more and more like. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When celebrated mahjar writer Ameen Rihani returned to his native Lebanon from his long stay in New York, he set out on nine journeys through the Lebanese countryside, from the rising mountains to the shores of the Mediterranean, to experience and document the land in intimate detail. Through his travelogue The Heart of Lebanon, Rihani brings his readers along by foot and by mule to explore rural villages like his childhood home of Freike, the flora and fauna of massive cedar forests, and archaeological sites that reveal the history of Lebanon. Meeting goatherds, healers, monks, and more along the way, Rihani offers more than vivid descriptions of the country’s sweeping scenery. His candid and often humorous narration captures what he sees as the soul of Lebanon and its people. Allen’s fluid translation transports English-language readers to an early twentieth-century rural Lebanon of the writer’s time in a way that only Rihani’s firsthand account can accomplish.

Book Judah Halevi and His Circle of Hebrew Poets in Granada

Download or read book Judah Halevi and His Circle of Hebrew Poets in Granada written by Ann Brener and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the greatest Hebrew poet since biblical times, Judah Halevi (ca. 1075-1141) is best-known for his “Songs of Zion,” written late in life. But when Halevi first appeared on the stage of history, he was just a young man, incredibly talented - and completely unknown. This study focuses on Halevi’s earliest period of creativity within a circle of Hebrew poets centering on the Muslim city-kingdom of Granada. Part One examines the lure of Muslim Spain for an up-and-coming young poet and the poems paving his way thither; Part Two, the social setting in which this circle of poets flourished and the dynamics behind many of its poems. A number of poems are brought in translation, many for the first time.

Download or read book Luxury Arts of the Renaissance written by Marina Belozerskaya and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2005-10-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries. The author analyzes how luxury arts went from being lofty markers of ascendancy and discernment in the Renaissance to being dismissed as “decorative” or “minor” arts—extravagant trinkets of the rich unworthy of the status of Art. Then, by re-examining the objects themselves and their uses in their day, she shows how sumptuous creations constructed the world and taste of Renaissance women and men.
