Book Travels and Experiences in Canada the Red River Territory

Download or read book Travels and Experiences in Canada the Red River Territory written by Peter O'Leary and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels and Experiences in Canada, the Red River Territory: And the United States I am confident, therefore, that my work, if not found wanting in other respects, will receive, in spite of my rough and ready style, favourable consideration at the hands of my readers. In dedicating this work (by permission) to the Governor General of Canada, I have neither considered his Excellency's politics, nor his exalted rank, but have dedicated it to Earl Dufferin because I firmly believe, that he is the right man in the right place, fully understanding his duties and responsibilities, and ever ready and anxious to perform them with credit to himself and benefit to the Canadian people. Nothing can exceed the courtesy extended by him to all classes of the community; he has ever manifested an earnest desire to assuage injurious dissensions, to unite clashing interests, and to firmly consolidate the union of the various sections of the Canadian Confederation. I cannot refrain from noticing in this place the generous and patriotic conduct of Mr. James Mulligan, of St. James, Fort Gary, Manitoba, who, during my stay there, deposited 100 in the Merchant's Bank of the City of Winnipeg, in the names of Mr. Boyle, Editor of the Irish Canadian, Toronto; Mr. M. P. Hyan, M.P., Montreal; and Mr. P. F. Johnson, Kanturk, Ireland, as trustees for the assistance of such Irish emigrants to Manitoba as may arrive in that province during the next two years. Book Reconquering Canada

Download or read book Reconquering Canada written by Andre and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen Quebec federalists dare to re-imagine the province and its defining role within a stronger Canada Quebecers have been debating their future relative to Canada since before Confederation, though the discussions have been most heated during the past four decades. In this time the debate has gone around in circles. Now, instead of presenting the often-repeated theme of Quebecois as constantly victimized by Canada, 14 Quebec personalities come together to propose a new vision which affirms Quebec's autonomy and includes it in building a strong, federal Canada. Eschewing traditional arguments which they claim prevent modern Quebec from advancing, lead to sterile debates, allow Quebecers to shirk responsibility and feed their victim complex, the contributors to this volume draw on their varied professional backgrounds as politicians, militants, intellectuals to invite Quebecers (and other Canadians) to rediscover the extraordinary potential of a well-crafted and properly realized federalism. Among the arguments, former provincial justice minister Martin Cauchon analyzes the evolution of the Constitution, discusses how Quebecois have used it as a tool to feed political debate and makes the argument that Quebec should acknowledge that the document reflects diversity and sign it, the sooner the better. Law professor Jean Leclair refutes the claim that nationality is exclusive, urging Quebecois to consider themselves both Quebecois and Canadian. UNESCO ambassador Marie Bernard-Meunier critiques the existing Canadian federal structure which she claims denies the provinces an institutionalized role at that level and suggests that an elected Senate and a commitment to unity might solve the problem. Although it was largely ignored by the French Canadian media when it was first published in French in 2007, The Reconquest of Canada is a breath of fresh air in the ongoing debate regarding Quebec's position relative to Canada. In this important book, the authors deliver a strong message that federalism provides Quebecers with the opportunity not only to find autonomy but to participate in the building of a united Canada. It is a clear, conciliatory treatise that paves the way for fresh voices and constructive discussion about the future of Canadian politics.

Book Journey to the Edge of the World

Download or read book Journey to the Edge of the World written by Billy Connolly and published by Headline Book Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To have Billy Connolly as a personal tour guide through some of the world's most dramatic landscapes in the vast wilderness of the Arctic is to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience only he can offer. In his own quintessential way, this much-loved Scottish comedian, actor, musician and self-proclaimed 'citizen of the world' takes us zig-zagging from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean via Newfoundland, Canada, the Yukon and the Northwest Passage in an epic adventure only recently made possible through global warming. With his infectious enthusiasm and idiosyncratic humour, Billy goes searching for the beauty of ordinariness and bumps into all manner of weird and wonderful people along the way. He learns how to be a bear whisperer, pans for gold with prospectors, learns how to square dance, kayaks through ice floes between fishing trips, runs bare-assed into a sweat lodge, and attempts the finer complexities of the Inuit language. He jams with fiddlers, kisses a cod, goes hunting for Big Foot, and invokes the spirit of the ancients while iceberg-harvesting. With as many laugh-out-loud moments as they are poignant ones, Journey to the Edge of the World is more than just an informative and entertaining travel guide - it is time spent exclusively in the company of an irascible national treasure.

Book This Is My Country What s Yours

Download or read book This Is My Country What s Yours written by Noah Richler and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2007 B.C. Award for Canadian Non-fiction A Globe and Mail Best 100 Book (2006) National Post Best Books (2006) A bold cultural portrait of contemporary Canada through the work of its most celebrated novelists, short story writers, and storytellers. Stories are the surest way to know a place, and at a time when the fabric of the country seems daily more uncertain, Noah Richler looks to our authors for evidence of the true nature of Canada. He argues why fiction matters and seeks to discover — in the extra-ordinary diversity of communities these writers represent — what stories, if any, bind us as a nation. Over two years, Richler has criss-crossed the country and interviewed close to one hundred authors — a who’s who of Canadian literature, including Wayne Johnston, Michael Crummey, Alistair MacLeod, Gil Courtemanche, Jane Urquhart, Joseph Boyden, Miriam Toews, Yann Martel, Fred Stenson, Douglas Coupland, and Rohinton Mistry — about the places and ideas that are most meaningful to their work. The result is a journey through the reality of Canada and its imagination at a critical point in the country’s evolution. Within thematic chapters he exposes our “Myths of Disappointment” and considers the stories of our native peoples, the rise of the city, and how our history as a colony shapes our society and politics even today. This Is My Country, What's Yours? is an impassioned literary travelogue and a vivid portrayal of our society, the work of Canadian authors, and the idea of writing itself. This Is My Country, What's Yours? is based on Noah Richler’s ten-part documentary of the same name originally broadcast on CBC Radio’s flagship Ideas program in spring 2005.
