Book My War

Download or read book My War written by Tracy Sugarman and published by Random House (NY). This book was released on 2000 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 7, 1941, when the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor, Tracy Sugarman was a young man studying to be an illustrator--and falling in love with a tawny-haired girl named June. But for Tracy, as for all Americans, everything changed that December dawn. Two years later, now married to June, Tracy was on a troopship bound for England, part of the massive Allied buildup for the liberation of Europe. On D-Day he landed on Utah Beach, one young ensign in the greatest military invasion in history. But Tracy Sugarman was not only a sailor. He was also an artist, who chronicled every aspect of his war in watercolors and sketches and in more than four hundred letters to his wife, who carefully saved everything her new husband sent her. Fifty years later, June Sugarman astonished her husband by showing him his long-forgotten pictures and words: lush watercolors and pen-and-ink drawings set down with breathtaking immediacy in the midst of war, and letters in which the young man poured out his feelings--about the terror and tedium of battle, his own ideals and hopes . . . and, always, his love for his wife. Here, selected from this treasure trove, are the drawings and watercolors that best portray the war Tracy Sugarman experienced. Interspersed throughout are excerpts of his loving and poignant letters home and, as the capstone of this extraordinary book, the single surviving letter from June to her husband. My War is a luminous, powerful account of a world at war--and a beautifully touching love story.

Book Drawing on Walls

Download or read book Drawing on Walls written by Matthew Burgess and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Burgess describes Haring discovering Robert Henri’s The Art Spirit in college (“He felt as if the book was speaking directly to him”), encountering the large paintings of Pierre Alechinsky (he was “blown away”), and recognizing a common impulse in dancers at the West Village’s Paradise Garage (“For Keith, drawing and painting were like dancing. He called it ‘mind-to-hand flow’”). Cochran uses a thick black line to suggest Haring’s creations, and renders figures in a Haring-esque style without seeming gimmicky. Of interest to young readers are Haring’s frequent efforts to involve children in mural-making projects. The story, including a respectful acknowledgement of Haring’s death from AIDS, makes the subject seem immediate and real—and presents a compelling vision of answering the call to create." —Starred Review, Publishers Weekly I would love to be a teacher because I love children and I think that not enough people respect children or understand how important they are. I have done many projects with children of all ages. —Keith Haring Truly devoted to the idea of public art, Haring created murals wherever he went. From Matthew Burgess, the much-acclaimed author of Enormous Smallness, comes Drawing on Walls: A Story of Keith Haring. Often seen drawing in white chalk on the matte black paper of unused advertising space in the subway, Haring’s iconic pop art and graffiti-like style transformed the New York City underground in the 1980s. A member of the LGBTQ community, Haring died tragically at the age of thirty-one from AIDS-related complications. Illustrated in paint by Josh Cochran, himself a specialist in bright, dense, conceptual drawings, this honest, celebratory book honors Haring’s life and art, along with his very special connection with kids.

But before that, he was a little boy who saw art everywhere: in poetry books and museums, in games and in the words that we speak, and in the pulsing energy of New York City. Now, award-winning illustrator Javaka Steptoe's vivid text and bold artwork echoing Basquiat's own introduce young readers to the powerful message that art doesn't always have to be neat or clean--and definitely not inside the lines--to be beautiful.

Book Walks in My New York A Story in Paintings Photographs and Text

Download or read book Walks in My New York A Story in Paintings Photographs and Text written by Eva Hage Personaleudvikling and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about New York City, as seen through the eyes and sensibilities of Danish architect and artist Mikael Olrik. The combination of watercolor, photograph and text offers the reader an original, multi-dimensional experience of a city so well known and yet still to be discovered, still mystifying. Trained to identify both what is important and what is distinctive, Olrik is gifted, with an intuitive sense of what to capture, what is abiding and totemic about a particular place. While one might anticipate the pastoral Central Park scenes and such landmarks as the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge, the images of Soho tenements and Williamsburg street scenes serve as stark reminders that New York may very well be the most complex city in the world, a city Mikael Olrik respectfully refers to as a living organism. After many extended stays there, he is comfortable in New York; always ready to process its changes and embrace its surprises, but never complacent or jaded.'Walks in My New York" is just that - a strolling, personal tour of New York City and parts of four of its boroughs. Thoughtful guide, Mikael invites you to join him. Positioning you at each stop, he gives you the broad view of an architect, the specificity of an artist, the straight-forwardness of a photographer, and the companionable text of a diarist. You are drawn in and made complicit in the experience. As a bonus, small maps accompany each entry and act as a sort of 'GPS' in print. Mikael Olrik sees to it that you have everything you need to explore a great and restless city abounding in sights and stories. Everything, that is, except a pair of sturdy walking shoes!

Book Drawing Telling Bible Stories

Download or read book Drawing Telling Bible Stories written by Thomas David Burleigh and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone loves hearing a good story. Even better than a told story, however, is one that unfolds before your eyes. I noticed that if I read a story from the Bible, the children in my Sunday school class were often not listening. However, if I told the story while drawing it out cartoon-style, on a large sheet of paper taped to the wall, the kids were riveted to the story. These are the drafts of the Bible stories that I used to teach the children in Sunday school. I would start the drawing with the background, hills or buildings in the first panel, and then I would add the characters in the foreground as they are introduced to the story. This idea for drawing the Bible stories while telling them is from a book I read many years ago. I have not been able to find that book again. Therefore, I am providing these sketches in hopes that someone else can use them. The stories are listed in the same order as they are in the Bible. Kids of all ages benefit by knowing the Bible stories.

Book The Silver Drawing Test and Draw a Story

Download or read book The Silver Drawing Test and Draw a Story written by Rawley Silver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art can be an invaluable means of communication. It can bypass language and impairment and allow for the expression of thoughts or feelings too difficult to communicate with words. In The Silver Drawing Test and Draw a Story, Rawley Silver draws on her years of experience using therapeutic art with hearing-impaired children, stroke patients, and others with learning disabilities or emotional disturbances. The book’s original art assessments use stimulus drawings to elicit responses that provide access to a patient’s emotions and attitudes toward themselves and others, while also testing for the ability to solve problems and convey ideas. Offering tools to assess cognitive skills that often escape detection on verbal tests of intelligence or achievement, the book helps in identifying those at risk for violent behavior or masked depression. Thoroughly updated from Silver’s earlier works, this new book includes techniques to assess aggression and depression that may lead to violence in schools and suicide among children and adolescents. It also addresses important gender and age differences, incorporating new information and updated studies, and it offers an in-depth look at the developmental procedures involved in these art assessments. As education for mental health professionals now includes art therapy more regularly, Silver has provided an invaluable resource for assessing emotional and cognitive content.
