Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-year-old Lexie, five-year-old Amelie and thirteen-year-old Leo come to Maggie after Leo confesses to a teacher that his mother's addiction problems and her latest violent relationship has left him as the sole carer to his younger sisters. Maggie welcomes the three children into her home, and is touched by the gentle care Leo shows to the two little girls. It is clear that Lexie and Amelie adore their big brother, and rely on him for comfort and reassurance. But Leo has experienced the neglect and abuse of his mother and her partner for far longer than his sisters, and is struggling with an eating disorder and showing signs of OCD. When Social Services begin to look at adoptive families for the children, Maggie is horrified when they suggest that the two angelic little girls will have a much better chance of being adopted without their damaged older brother. Knowing the impact that losing his sisters forever will have on vulnerable Leo, they face the ultimate dilemma. Should the children stay together and dash the hope of them ever having a forever family? Or do they sacrifice the close bond between the siblings to give the girls a chance to be adopted? A true story of hope from Sunday Times bestselling author Maggie Hartley, a foster carer for over 20 years. 'An exceptional and inspiring read' 5* Amazon reader review

Book Voice Lessons

Download or read book Voice Lessons written by Cara Mentzel and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voice Lessons is the story of one younger sister growing up in the shadow of a larger-than-life older sister—looking up to her, wondering how they were alike and how they were different and, ultimately, learning how to live her own life and speak in her own voice on her own terms. As Cara Mentzel, studied, explored, married, gave birth (twice) and eventually became an elementary school teacher, she watched her sister, Idina Menzel, from the wings and gives readers a front row seat to opening night of Rent and Wicked, a seat at the Tonys, and a place on the red carpet when her sister taught millions more, as the voice of Queen Elsa in the animated musical Frozen, to “Let It Go.” Voice Lessons is the story of sisters—sisters with pig tails, sisters with boyfriends and broken hearts, sisters as mothers and aunts, sisters as teachers and ice-queens, sisters as allies and confidantes. As Cara puts it, “My big sister is Tony-Award-Winning, Gravity-Defying, Let-It-Go-Singing Idina Menzel who has received top billing on Broadway marquees, who has performed for Barbra Streisand and President Obama, at the Super Bowl and at the Academy Awards. The world knows her as 'Idina Menzel', but I call her 'Dee'.” Voice Lessons is their story.

Book excerpt: * SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2021 COSTA BOOK AWARDS: BIOGRAPHY * 'If her moving, engrossing, elegantly written memoir does not win prizes, there really is no justice in the literary world.' Lucy Atkins, Sunday Times All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. When Arifa Akbar discovered that her sister had fallen seriously ill, she assumed there would be a brief spell in hospital and then she'd be home. This was not to be. It was not until the day before she died that the family discovered she was suffering from tuberculosis. Consumed is a story of sisterhood, grief, the redemptive power of art and the strange mythologies that surround tuberculosis. It takes us from Keats's deathbed and the tubercular women of opera to the resurgence of TB in modern Britain today. Arifa travels to Rome to haunt the places Keats and her sister had explored, to her grandparent's house in Pakistan, to her sister's bedside at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and back to a London of the seventies when her family first arrived, poor, homeless and hungry. Consumed is an eloquent and moving excavation of a family's secrets and a sister's detective story to understand her sibling.

Book The Sisters Story

Download or read book The Sisters Story written by R.M. Dalton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sisters' Story - Legend of Queen Brighton and Sister Jasmine This is the story of two sisters who are born into a peaceful and beautiful isolated valley. But fate or Providence has a job for each of them far from home. The story tells of how they find a path over the forbidding crags that hem their valley in, although nobody else believed it even existed, and so they make their way at last to the kingdom their ancestors fled from long ago, though as yet they do not know any of their history. The girls grow into women; they were teenagers when they set out from home, and each finds what seems to be a place in life and a destiny - yet it is not to be. The older meets her prince charming and marries him. For a while they reign happily enough, yet we see the cares and responsibilities that they bear as the rulers. The younger chooses another path and so they go their separate ways, as siblings generally do. In differing ways also, grave trials and despair come to each. Each wrestles with hopelessness and temptations, yearning for the childhood love with which they supported each other, but not finding it. So, still separated, each makes at length for home and peace, where they are reconciled and spend their days fruitfully in happiness, although the way home is not easy either. The story is about conquest and overcoming, through courage, honesty, faith and love. It is about how two innocents go into the World and gain much, and loose much too. They return home, yet in the wisdom each has learned, the gifts they bring from the outside back to their rustic valley are only beneficial. They also leave behind something of the simple, honest and kindly ways of the Valley in the lands they visited. This is not an allegory, although there may be parallels drawn about choices and their consequences and the sincere effort that repentance and returning may require. It is not a fairy story either - there is no fairy godmother, no wizard and no magic unless it be the magic conjured by love for another, and courage and a good heart. It is a story embodying hope and purpose, even when the actors in the story do not know at that time what it may be.

Book Once We Were Sisters

Download or read book Once We Were Sisters written by Sheila Kohler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-01-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE OF PEOPLE MAGAZINE’S BEST NEW BOOKS “A searing and intimate memoir about love turned deadly.” —The BBC “An intimate illumination of sisterhood and loss.” —People When Sheila Kohler was thirty-seven, she received the heart-stopping news that her sister Maxine, only two years older, was killed when her husband drove them off a deserted road in Johannesburg. Stunned by the news, she immediately flew back to the country where she was born, determined to find answers and forced to reckon with his history of violence and the lingering effects of their most unusual childhood—one marked by death and the misguided love of their mother. In her signature spare and incisive prose, Sheila Kohler recounts the lives she and her sister led. Flashing back to their storybook childhood at the family estate, Crossways, Kohler tells of the death of her father when she and Maxine were girls, which led to the family abandoning their house and the girls being raised by their mother, at turns distant and suffocating. We follow them to the cloistered Anglican boarding school where they first learn of separation and later their studies in Rome and Paris where they plan grand lives for themselves—lives that are interrupted when both marry young and discover they have made poor choices. Kohler evokes the bond between sisters and shows how that bond changes but never breaks, even after death. “A beautiful and disturbing memoir of a beloved sister who died at the age of thirty-nine in circumstances that strongly suggest murder. . . . Highly recommended.” —Joyce Carol Oates
