Download or read book Chicago Latina Trailblazers written by Rita D. Hernández and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexican American and Puerto Rican women have long taken up the challenge to improve the lives of Chicagoans in the city’s Latino/a/x communities. Rita D. Hernández, Leticia Villarreal Sosa, and Elena R. Gutiérrez present testimonies by Latina leaders who blazed new trails and shaped Latina Chicago history from the 1960s through today. Taking a do-it-all attitude, these women advanced agendas, built institutions, forged alliances, and created essential resources that Latino/a/x communities lacked. Time and again, they found themselves the first Latina to hold their post or part of the first Latino/a/x institution of its kind. Just as often, early grassroots efforts to address issues affecting themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods grew into larger endeavors. Their experiences ranged from public schools to healthcare to politics to broadcast media, and each woman’s story shows how her work changed countless lives and still reverberates across the entire city. An eyewitness view of an unknown history, Chicago Latina Trailblazers reveals the vision and passion that fueled a group of women in the vanguard of reform. Contributors: Ana Castillo, Maria B. Cerda, Carmen Chico, Aracelis Flecha Figueroa, Aida Luz Maisonet Giachello, Mary Gonzales, Ada Nivia López, Emma Lozano, Virginia Martinez, Carmen Mendoza, Elena Mulcahy, Guadalupe Reyes, Luz Maria B. Solis, and Carmen Velasquez

Download or read book Daughter of Heaven written by Leslie Li and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-12-03 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerful, touching memoir of a critically acclaimed Chinese-American writer, taste becomes the keeper of memory and food the keeper of culture when Nai-nai, her extraordinary grandmother, arrives from mainland China. Leslie Li’s paternal grandfather, Li Zogren, was China’s first democratically elected vice president, to whom Chiang Kai-shek left control of the country when he fled to Formosa in 1949. Nine years later, Li’s wife, Nai-nai, comes to live with her son’s family in New York City, bringing a whole new world of sights, smells, and tastes as she quickly takes control of the kitchen. Nai-nai’s tantalizingly exotic cooking opens up the heart and mind of her American granddaughter to her Chinese heritage—and to the world. Through her grandmother’s traditional cuisine Leslie bridges the cultural divide in an America in which she is a minority—as well as the growing gap at home between her rigid, traditional Chinese father and her progressive American-born mother. Interspersed throughout her intimate and moving memoir are the author’s personal recipes, most from Nai-nai’s kitchen, that add a delicious dimension to the work. A loving ode to family and food, Daughter of Heaven is an exquisite blend of memory, history, and the senses.
Download or read book God Chose Me written by Donna Mills and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journey to finding God is different for every one of us. It doesn't matter who you call God. He calls on us to serve, to love unconditionally. I am a survivor because God chose me to be. I learned to find peace in the storm. My journey does not look like yours, yet when I was willing to stand still, I could find peace because God found me right where I was. How many times have we all asked, "Why me?" at one time or another in our lives? Many years ago, after sharing my story with a trusted friend, she commented, "That's a lot." I replied, "It is, and what I don't understand is, why me?" Her response has helped me through some of the darkest days of my life. She said, "Why not you? God has a plan for you." Putting all of it in a book for the world to read was not my plan; it was God's. I have shared my story with many others over the years, and every time at least one person comes to me afterward and tells me how my story has inspired them to keep moving forward. So before I speak, I pray that one person will hear something in my account to give them a little hope, a spark to make a decision, or encourage them not to give up. I have done my work well if my story saves one person from the darkness and hopelessness of abuse, violence, fear, shame, defeat, or addiction.

Download or read book Puberty Sexuality and the Self written by Karin Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puberty, Sexuality and the Self considers the effects of puberty and teenage sexuality on adolescents. By analyzing interviews with 55 teenagers, Karin Martin finds that girls' self-esteem drops significantly more than boys' does at adolescence. While this finding is supported by previous studies, Martin picks up where these earlier studies leave off by focusing on girls' development and considering different experiences of puberty and sex as an explanation for girls' greater drop in self-esteem. Puberty, Sexuality and the Self examines voice change, breast development, shaving, expectations of sex, the decision to have sex, experiences of sex and how boys and girls manage their emotions and selves throughout all of these new experiences. Comparing boys and girls at adolescence, Martin takes a qualitative look at puberty and sexuality, supporting her theory in the words of the adolescents themselves.

Download or read book Codename Lehi written by Jon Beckmon and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the condensed version of my life. It contains the things I can remember most about what has occurred in my life. It is in effect the autobiography of Jonathan Daniel Beckmon which is my full legal name given to me by my parents Raymond Beckmon and Linda Helms (her maiden name) and assigned to me in the United States of America where I was born. At my current stage of life my only real goal is to get married. I have been looking for a suitable spouse for at least 15 years as of the time this book is being published with no luck. Its very hard to find a decent moral woman with the current state of our society and general lack of moral values in the United States of America. I honestly feel that had I been born in Russia I would have been married long ago. I had much better luck finding women there that were interested in my qualities and that were decent human beings. However I have only managed to make it to Russia once as it is beyond my current financial means to go there a lot until I find a wife. Since I refuse to lower my very high standards Ive lived out my life alone. It is better to die alone than to marry a wicked woman. You can read the book to find where the codename Lehi comes from.
