Or so it seem The truth is that Jazz's life is anything but picture perfect. He's seeing a shrink because his mom and dad found out he's gay; his schoolmates torment him every day; and he keeps bumping into his high school teacher at a local gay bar. To make matters worse, his best friend, Al, keeps pulling him into trouble. Jazz knows he has to keep everything together, at least through finals, so he can get away from this life once and for all. But, in his haste to leave everything behind, he comes to find out that the only thing he can't escape is himself. She remained quiet and clam, like all daytime birds in the dark. She would hear, however. She listened t the wind whistling through the pine needles. The wind-music conjured up images of a strange woods and unknown flowers. The sound was foreign. It was not the soft song of wind humming through the hemlock needles of home. Frightful was a long way from her familiar forest. Suddenly an all-invading passion filled her. She must go. She must find one mountain among thousands, one hemlock tree among millions,. And the one boy who called himself Sam Gribley. The one mountain was her territory, the one tree was Sam's house, the perch beside it, her place. Now at last we pick up the sotry?but this time, the narrative continues through Frightful's keen-sighted eyes.Raised by Sam, Frightful is an imprinted bird. She has no idea how to migrate, mate, or be a mother. She can barely even feed herself, for although she is a skilled hunter, it was always Sam who signaled permission to partake of the kill. Sam, so patient and kind, will support her from afar, and so will bird activists Jon and Susan wood and conservationist Leon Longbridge. But despite a letter-writing campaign by local schoolchildren, other would despoil her Catskill home?designing fatal electrical wires and disturbing good nesting areas with jackhammers and paint trucks. With evolution and a proud natural intelligence on her side, Frightful may yet beat the odds of famine, winter, and human encroachment. Thus began Jessicas journey through a cancer diagnosis. In My Side of the Story, Jessica shares the narrative of how she and her family endured the battle with cancer, from the diagnosis to dangerous surgery to radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Download or read book My Side of the Road written by Dorothy Lamour and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1980 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this eye-opening autobiography, one of Hollywood's most durable personalities reveals a surprisingly dramatic private life that's scarcely suggested by her glamorous screen image. The exotic costumes of the Road pictures hid a woman of extraordinary versatility: beauty contest winner, comedienne, radio star, fashion model, nightclub singer, vaudeville trouper, war bond saleswoman, dramatic actress, musical comedy star, divorcee, stuntwoman--and dedicated wife and mother. Few movie buffs know that Dorothy Lambour was voted Miss New Orleans only after a successful tour on the Fanchon and Marco circuit--only to wind up running an elevator for a living. She sang with Rudy Vallee and Herbie Kay (who became her first husband)--and was one of the most reluctant stars Hollywood ever created. She never accepted Louis B. Mayer's offer of a screen test. Cast as star of her first film, The Jungle Princess, she was mortified by her sarong costume, her appearance in the rushes, and by the outrageous publicity Paramount created to launch her career. She hit her stride during Hollywood's heyday, when off-camera events often eclipsed what the public saw on screen. Here she reveals her experiences with co-workers like Betty Grable, John Wayne, Jack Oakie, Fred MacMurray, Anthony Quinn, Ray Milland, Alan Ladd, Mae West, Cecil B. DeMille, Carole Lombard, John Ford and Robert Preston. Why The Hurricane's crew held a grudge against Jon Hall, and how they exacted their revenge; how love scenes with William Holden and Tyrone Power were ruined by an appendectomy and a whoopee cushion, respectively; the violent and oft-censored behavior of her chimpanzee co-stars; how she doffed her sarong for serious dramatic roles in Wild Harvest, Manhandled, and A Medal for Benny; the inspired wisecrackery on Bing, Bob, and Dorothy's first Road to Singapore, the bitter wrangles over the final Road to Hong Kong--and the name of the woman identified as Dorothy Lamour at Crosby's funeral. After her wartime marriage to Air Corps Lieutenant William Howard, she raised two sons while expanding her career into personal appearances, nightclubs, and the legitimate theater. Even as her film career seemed to dim, she appeared at the London Palladium and later undertook a grueling national tour in the title role of Hello, Dolly! Now, she shares the tragic story of her husband's final illness, and her resolve to keep on fulfilling her duties to her public, her family--and ultimately, to herself. Illustrated with photographs from her personal collection, this is the self-portrait of an artist whose rare honesty and character, warmth and courage have, until now, been known only to a privileged few.--From dust jacket.

Book excerpt: In the National Book Award longlist book This Side of Wild, Newbery Honor–winning author Gary Paulsen shares surprising true stories about his relationship with animals, highlighting their compassion, intellect, intuition, and sense of adventure. Gary Paulsen is an adventurer who competed in two Iditarods, survived the Minnesota wilderness, and climbed the Bighorns. None of this would have been possible without his truest companions: his animals. Sled dogs rescued him in Alaska, a sickened poodle guarded his well-being, and a horse led him across a desert. Through his interactions with dogs, horses, birds, and more, Gary has been struck with the belief that animals know more than we may fathom. His understanding and admiration of animals is well known, and in This Side of Wild, which has taken a lifetime to write, he proves the ways in which they have taught him to be a better person.

Download or read book The House of Yahweh My Side of the Story written by Kay Hawkins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years have elapsed since I was excommunicated from The House of Yahweh in Abilene, Texas. In the interim, this religious organization has come to be known as the largest doomsday cult in America. How did The House of Yahweh, Abilene, get this sordid reputation? As you read, you will come to understand. Buffalo Bill Hawkins, now known as Yisrayl B. Hawkins, the Elder and Overseer of this organization, declared to me, I am The House of Yahweh. He also declares, I am without sin. The scriptures in the editions of the bible that he now publishes have been rewritten, cleverly twisted to fit his own personal doctrines. The scriptures plainly show that you will know him by his fruit, in other words, by what he has produced. I am sharing these fruits with you. How did this organization begin? Why do people who seem rational, who seem to have a sound mind, get wrapped up in something that Yisrayl Hawkins has caused The House of Yahweh to become? Why do these people change their last names to Hawkins? Why do they pierce their ear to a door of The House of Yahweh building in order to go into servitude to a mere man? Why do the men secretly practice polygamy? How would a person stay in a religion like this? Why did I stay as long as I did? Why did I leave? I am writing my personal account to tell you my side of these events. I was there at the beginning when The House of Yahweh was actually a wonderful place to be. I was also there when things slowly began to change for the worse, like a frog placed in a cool pot of water which the fire slowly brings to a boil.
