Download or read book Voice Machines written by Bonnie Gordon and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the castrato as a critical provocation to explore the relationships between sound, music, voice instrument, and machine. Italian courts and churches began employing castrato singers in the late sixteenth century. By the eighteenth century, the singers occupied a celebrity status on the operatic stage. Constructed through surgical alteration and further modified by rigorous training, castrati inhabited human bodies that had been “mechanized” to produce sounds in ways that unmechanized bodies could not. The voices of these technologically enhanced singers, with their unique timbre, range, and strength, contributed to a dramatic expansion of musical vocabulary and prompted new ways of imagining sound, the body, and personhood. Connecting sometimes bizarre snippets of history, this multi-disciplinary book moves backward and forward in time, deliberately troubling the meaning of concepts like “technology” and “human.” Voice Machines attends to the ways that early modern encounters and inventions—including settler colonialism, emergent racialized worldviews, the printing press, gunpowder, and the telescope—participated in making castrati. In Bonnie Gordon’s revealing study, castrati serve as a critical provocation to ask questions about the voice, the limits of the body, and the stories historians tell.

Download or read book The Lisu written by Michele Zack and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings the ironic worldview of the Lisu to life through vivid, often amusing accounts of individuals, communities, regions, and practices. One of the smallest and last groups of stateless people, and the most egalitarian of all Southeast Asian highland minorities, the Lisu have not only survived extremes at the crossroads of civil wars, the drug trade, and state-sponsored oppression but adapted to modern politics and technology without losing their identity. The Lisu weaves a lively narrative that condenses humanity’s transition from border-free tribal groupings into today’s nation-states and global market economy. Journalist and historian Michele Zack first encountered the Lisu in the 1980s and conducted research and fieldwork among them in the 1990s. In 2014 she again traveled extensively in tribal areas of Thailand, Myanmar, and China, when she documented the transformative changes of globalization. Some Lisu have adopted successful new urban occupations in business and politics, while most continue to live as agriculturists “far from the ruler.” The cohesiveness of Lisu culture has always been mysterious—they reject hierarchical political organization and traditionally had no writing system—yet their culture provides a particular skillset that has helped them navigate the terrain of the different religious and political systems they have recently joined. They’ve made the transition from living in lawless, self-governing highland peripheries to becoming residents and citizens of nation-states in a single generation. Ambitious and written with journalist’s eye for detail and storytelling, The Lisu introduces the unique and fascinating culture of this small Southeast Asian minority. Their path to national and global citizenship illustrates the trade-offs all modern people have made, and their egalitarian culture provides insight into current political choices in a world turning toward authoritarianism.

Download or read book Freeburg written by Dan Harkins and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freeburg details how a sick and tired city in Florida became the first in America to institute the universal mandate to vote. A young history teacher named Saul McGinty is prematurely disillusioned by the darkest moments in his own nation’s history – and his own. As he finds himself speechless before his young charges, his life grinding to a lonely halt in Ohio, he’s called back to Freeburg to clean up his childhood home after the apparent suicide of his estranged father, a wounded and whacked-out veteran of the first Gulf War, who’s left behind clues for his son to find that point instead to a nation-changing idea that he’s purportedly been killed to squash. Though sobering, Freeburg is also a silly, studied, heartfelt, and honest depiction of some of our most embarrassing modern mistakes. It offers a seemingly simple solution to many of America’s modern woes and a path of redemption to restore its esteem in the eyes of the world.

Download or read book The Truth About Islam written by Ibn El-Neil and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Muslims in Islamic countries are exposed to the religion of Islam 24 hours, seven days a week, for their entire life (No freedom of choice here). They hear five prayers between 6: 00 AM and 8: 00 PM everyday on radio, television, Loud Speakers and other public address systems that cover every square inch of the country, whether they want to or not. They get to hear the Koran recited for hours every day. The non-Muslim is a second class citizen who is not allowed to rule or hold key position in the country. He can live in the abode of Islam as long as he doesn't preach his religions outside his community, doesn't insult Islam or criticize the Prophet, and he must pay a religion tax. The punishment for leaving Islam is death (most recently a young woman killed in Saudi Arabia and one in Jordan for leaving Islam; Sept. 2008]. Islam gives its followers the right to kill non-Muslims, and take their wives, children, and possessions as a booty blessed by the Koran and the Hadith. Only a Muslim man can legally lie to his wives, and his enemies.
Download or read book Did Muhammad Exist written by Robert Spencer and published by Bombardier Books. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there any sound historical evidence that the prophet of Islam actually existed, or is the entire story of Muhammad fable or fiction? It is a question that few have thought—or dared—to ask. Virtually everyone, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, takes for granted that the prophet of Islam lived as a prophet, as well as a political and military leader, in seventh-century Arabia. But this widely accepted story begins to crumble on close examination. In his blockbuster New York Times bestseller The Truth about Muhammad, historian and Islam expert Robert Spencer revealed the often shocking contents of Islamic teachings about Muhammad. Now, in this newly revised and expanded version of Did Muhammad Exist?, he lays bare those teachings’ surprisingly shaky historical foundations. This updated and enlarged version of this acclaimed book examines even more striking and compelling evidence that the story of Muhammad, who for so long was assumed to have lived in the “full light of history,” could be more myth and legend than historical fact. Spencer meticulously examines historical records and archaeological findings, pioneering new scholarship to reconstruct what we can know about Muhammad, the Qur’an, and the early days of Islam. The evidence he presents challenges the most fundamental assumptions about Islam’s origins.

Download or read book The Voyage of a Shepherd Boy written by Panagiotis N. Symbas and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years during discussions with my family, I mentioned various events of my life to emphasize some facts of life in a historical perspective. Although my sons, during their tender ages, disregarded my comments, later on each one of them on many occasions suggested, and sometimes insisted that I should record my past. However, each time they asked I ignored their comments in order either to write another scientific paper or book, or to devote my available free time to review medical literature, or to spend some time with my family. Now that my remaining years are becoming shorter and shorter, I thought it might be the time to write my story. I will do it first, for the benefit of my children and, grandchildren, and second, for my own benefit, since reminiscing over even the most difficult events of my life is as invigorating now as it was then when I overcame so many obstacles. Also, there are many beautiful and happy memories that I want my wife and my sons to understand, as well as how the struggles of life made me the man that I am. Unfortunately, I have not kept a diary and as a result whatever I write is only from my own recollections. Thus, my biography is subject to the limitations of my memory. However, since my memory on medical subjects and my surgical dexterity as yet have not failed me, as is evident by the fact that Emory School of Medicine is still allowing me to teach and practice, I am confident that the events that I am about to describe are fairly accurate. This text encompasses some of the events, which had a great impact in my life. My wish is that it might convince my children, grandchildren and anyone else who might read it that their dreams, with hard work and determination, are realizable no matter how unrealistic they might seem. So, as Benjamin Franklin wrote, “I shall indulge the inclination so natural in old men, to be talking of themselves and their own past actions, and I shall indulge it without being troublesome to others who thro’ respect to age might think themselves oblig’d to give me a hearing, since this may be read or not as anyone pleases.”
