Book My Rock Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Rock Garden Classic Reprint written by Reginald John Farrer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Rock-Garden Nowadays it is, indeed, becoming for a new 'gardening book to slink into the world under cover of an apology; and it had been my intention to plead, in excuse, that this volume of mine held no presumptuous notion of giving help to any rival gardener (for all true gardeners are rivals). I see, however, that such a plea would at once make publication a mere impertinence. There fore I will frankly hope that some of my readers may consider this book's existence justified by the help it gives them. But if some are inclined to resent the appearance of yet another work on gardening, others may well cavil, I fear, at its confessed incompleteness and inadequacy. To these I plead that only the most stringent considerations of 'space could have compelled the many omissions that they will mark in my pages. I had originally dealt faithfully with all my plants, and if any reader now vainly search this book for a detailed treatment of Aethionema, Silene, Lychnis, Veronica, and many another treasure, let him blame not me, but the pitiless blue pencil that made such a massacre of the innocents. Faced by cruel alternatives, I chose rather. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of My Rock Garden During the last quarter of a century Alpine Gardens have increased in number to a great extent, and the cultivation of Alpine and herbaceous plants has received much more attention than before. This is probably due to the many attractive features in connection therewith, both in the style of gardening and in the plants themselves. In this little book on the construction and the inhabitants of his Alpine garden the author gives a vivid idea of the use to which even a small garden may be put. He shows how in the space of a few square yards it is possible and easy to build, with any available stone, or other material, an attractive rockery, and on this to grow a large number of interesting and beautiful plants. In the chapter on construction there is a mass of useful information that would be very helpful to anyone who contemplates laying out his garden in this manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rock Garden IN the whole history of gardening there has never been soimuch interest taken in the cultivation of alpines as there is to-day. Not very many years ago it was quite exceptional to find a rock garden worthy of the name in any but the largest of our private gardens. To-day, however, a garden of any appreciable dimensions is not considered complete unless it contains a portion devoted to the cultivation of alpines. Book The English Rock Garden Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Rock Garden Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Reginald Farrer and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Rock-Garden, Vol. 2 Nama Rockrothii, from California, has hairy foliage and white or purplish funnels of flowers in terminal heads on stems of 7 or 8 inches. It should be quite easy in open cool soil. Nananthea perpusilla, a very minutely dwarf and rather worthless little microscopic-flowered Composite from Colorado. Narcissus. - The large daffodils are unfitted for the rock-garden, less on account of their stature, indeed, than because they die so untidily, in flopping masses of yellow decay. For its higher reaches, however, if it be large enough in scale, they look superb, and their decadence is not noticed (still less if enshrouded by degrees in the developing leafage of such a thing as Potentilla nepalensis Willmottiae). But the smaller daffodils have their place everywhere in the foreground, and the most delicate of them rejoice in the conditions of the water-bed (and, indeed, they all like a generous supply of moisture at the root while growing). The most exquisite of all, the silver-pale N. Bulbocodium monophyllus, should have, of course, the daintiest corner, in soil almost wholly sandy, and very damp in spring, under the lee of a hot rock; and over the whole garden may be peppered the minute charm of N. minimus, a real miniature golden-trumpet daffodil of 2 inches or less, that is never in the way; and, for the rest, are there not elaborate catalogues consecrated entirely to their worship, their needs, their beauties, and their preposterous prices? Nardosmia fragrans is no more than Tussilago fragrans of former days; and N. frigida is, accordingly, hardly less close itself to the giant Coltsfoots, so valuable for their sweet and dowdy blooms in winter. Book The English Rock Garden Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Rock Garden Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Reginald Farrer and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Rock Garden, Vol. 1 Upon the knowledge that the treasures we possess are but a tithe of those that we may some day come to have. And, since cata logues each year are helping us to fill these voids, it became obvious that such a book as this, to have more than ephemeral value, must run ahead of collectors, and give authoritative notes, not only on all species that are grown, but also on all such as ought to be. In other words, I set myself to peruse my authorities, not only with a view to dealing fairly by the plants we know, but also to anticipating many catalogues as yet unborn, by discovering, through a veil of cumbrous Latin, any promise of beauty in species that we do not possess. So that in future, when confronted with the offer of a beautiful unknown, collectors may be able to refer to this volume, there to ascertain whether indeed it be beautiful or no. That such a guide is complete, or ever can be, I should, of course, be the last to claim: at the same time it cannot but be that this book will be able to make accessible a large amount of information on plants and matter hitherto unknown or buried in learned works of difficult attainment and digestion. But if you were to compile a full list of all plants possible for the rock garden, whether good or bad, no library would hold the number cf volumes to which such a work would run. Therefore (seeing that I have already exceeded the space allotted me by exactly the same amount again) my work has had to be severely selective, and my own personal taste must be held responsible for many omissions; while yet others will have been due to oversight, or to the inability of a botanical diagnosis to give any fair notion of the beauty belonging to the plant it frigidly describes. Download or read book Plants for the Rock Garden 1924 Classic Reprint written by Bobbink And Atkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants for the Rock-Garden, 1924 Another point of great importance is the proper building of the garden. This should be done step by step, building both soil and rock together, which eliminates the possibility of holes between the rocks, as is often the case with so-called rockeries that are merely a heap of stones with soil thrown over them, or vice versa. The rocks should be placed more or less flat, in such manner that the water will run-into'the soil and not drain off. When in this position, the-rocks protect the roots from heat and drought in summer and severe frost in winter. The pockets should be large enough to allow ample space for soil, and in places where roots can grow unobstructed between the rocks. An annual top-dressing of soil in spring_ aids in keeping the trailing stems in place, as well as being beneficial to all the pl.ants The soil should be watched in summer and kept moist by watering. It IS advisable to plant small evergreens throughout the rockery, so that a winter effect can be obtained, even when the flowering plants have died down. The latter should be selected from, those varieties that will collectively cover a long season of bloom. The bog plants, if any, should be near the pool or stream. All the varieties named in this list have been tried and have proved highly satisfactory for Rock Garden planting, the majority being essentially rock-plants. Book excerpt: AHS Book Award winner Rock gardening —the art of growing alpines and other miniature plants in the company of rocks in order to recreate the look of a rugged mountaintop—has been surging in popularity. Time and space constraints, chronic drought in the American West, and a trend toward architectural plants are just a few of the reasons for the increased interest. Rock Gardening brings this traditional style to a new generation of gardeners. It includes a survey of gorgeous rock gardens from around the world, the techniques and methods specific to creating and maintaining a rock garden, and profiles of the top 50 rock garden plants.
