Download or read book A Quiet River s Demise written by Gabriel Zeldis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was begun in 1996, one year after Josiah Young escaped with his life from New Jersey. Experts will say that he should have died. He attributes his life-story to the workings of Jesus Christ in his life. Although here, it is very different. Very real, and very naked. Truth is at the heart of this work. It is written in the common language of the time, and mirrors a culture that constantly denies itself. Yet just as every individual will some day stand alone, Josiah Young faces what confronts him day after day. And this is his past, his fears and fate of his soul. His past is the night of abuse. Living and dying, we can only attempt to explain how love is all that there is, and all that holds us together. Even when there is nothing to love, somehow it is love that sees us through. It is the workings of the divine that bring him to his knees.

Download or read book My Comic Book Mind Series written by Gabriel Zeldis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-02-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I remember the things I felt at that bar in the mountains. The music was over... Some songs played on the Jukebox. The tears welled within me. The dusty road outside... I had my whole life ahead of me, a vision of the indescribable future. Tears fell within. Mountain life was different, but it fit me. A ship set sail on a lonely river. What was love anyway? Complicated. There was no one that could hurt me again I imagined. Just scars. Scars and a desire to make something out of my life. My cabin was just a shadow in the night. And I was supposed to believe I didn't know Jesus? I poured shots and beers that night to the locals. Some who had hearts and some whose hearts had escaped them. I'll never forget the songs that played on the Jukebox. The moon cast weary shadows, and eyes met eyes in the smoky bar. Smoke rising. All I could think of was having a fire for myself in my shell of a cabin outside, by the river. A river that always ran...

Download or read book Moon for Sale written by Richard Price and published by Carcanet Press Ltd. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in Richard Price's Moon for Sale delight in linguistic play, turning over sound and sense with gleeful dexterity. But they are equally visually sensitive: Price's lyricism speaks as much to a cinematic sensibility as to a poetic one, to Terrence Malick's Tree of Life, to the carefully braided documentaries of Viera Cakányová, and to the elegiac filmscapes of Margaret Tait. In the shadow of a culture in which even the moon is up for auction, Moon for Sale records the decadence of our times by incorporating and repurposing that culture's language. At the same time a haven of meaning is sought in the erotic, in the intimate transactions between bodies, that 'rush of unclevering' which both simplifies and intensifies the world.
Download or read book Sailing Uphill written by Sam McKinney and published by TouchWood Editions. This book was released on 2000 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sam McKinney has spent many of the best parts of his life on the water -- sailing a dory along Canada's west coast, crewing on the deck of a river steamer, shipping out deep-sea in freighters across the Atlantic. In the middle of his life, when he sold the hull of an ocean-going sailboat which had absorbed two years of his love and labour, he looked at his boat-building shed and thought, "Hmm. With all this lumber, I could build a boat and go across the continent, instead". So he did. In the Gander he travelled up the Columbia and Snake rivers, down the Missouri, up the Mississippi and Illinois and on, ever eastward, to New York City. It took him four summers and three Ganders, one of which had to be abandoned in the mud of the upper Missouri, but he made it. This is a lovely and evocative memoir by a perceptive and thoughtful writer.
Download or read book Rivers written by David Gaffney and published by Top Shelf Productions. This book was released on 2021-09-22 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three ordinary weirdos, one recurring dream. The acclaimed minds behind The Three Rooms in Valerie’s Head return with a whimsical and ambitious portrait of human connection in the age of digital fragmentation. You meet the strangest people on the internet. Gideon is a lonely I.T. developer, obsessed by a comic book from childhood called Revenge of the Ghoulors, and secretly in love with his co-worker Lisa. Heidi works at home in her pyjamas, makes a lot of soup, and wishes she had time for friends. Peter is a 56-year-old divorcee who delivers classic cars, has a built-in toaster, and thinks a lot about the past. These three people seem unconnected, yet they share something—they each have the same recurring dream. And when a new web service is introduced that helps people share their dreams, what will happen when the three of them find out about each other? Just what is it that links these three lonely souls? Nimbly weaving together multiple storylines (including extracts from Gideon’s comic book, Revenge of the Ghoulors), Dan Berry and David Gaffney present Rivers: a quirky examination of how events from the past can bind people together forever, and a surprising reunion between people who’ve never met.

Download or read book Rivers of Darkness Visions of Light written by Larry A. Whited and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rivers of Darkness, Visions of Light: From Extortion to Salvation is the true story of an extortion attempt and of the life that both precedes and follows the decision to commit the crime. The story involves a maze of psychological and spiritual twists to maintain an element of growing suspense throughout. This true account is told with an unusual transparency, revealing normally hidden personal thoughts, vulnerabilities, and motivations. The first chapter opens with a glimpse into the tormented mind of a young child separated from life and love, and the second chapter has the reader swimming along with the author in the Mississippi River for five miles in a daring nighttime operation to pick up a packaged bundle of cash along a New Orleans riverbank. Action follows with the site being under continual and hidden surveillance by a seven-man team headed by the FBI. The story then reverts to the events that helped shape the life that brought about this crime, and a chronology unfolds throughout the next fourteen chapters that affords a view of human nature that is painfully honest, at times disturbing, and eventually uplifting as reconciliation with God and man is achieved. This is a story of one man reaching out to God, his finding only walls and silence, and his acting out of an absolute sense of futility and frustration. Then, when least expected as that life finally seemed to come together with a notable measure of success as a commercial deep sea diver in the Gulf of Mexico, the real story of life begins. The reader gets a front row seat with an unobstructed view to see how a life plays out when a person first rejects and then ultimately receives spiritual light.

Download or read book All Friends Are Necessary written by Tomas Moniz and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “tender and open-hearted novel," (Nina LaCour, author of Yerba Buena) Tomas Moniz—a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway and Lambda Literary awards—delivers a commanding new story about the power of friendship, community, and the families we create for ourselves. Efren “Chino” Flores has just moved back to the Bay Area from Seattle, jumping from sublet to sublet. In Washington, he was an adored middle school biology teacher with a loving wife, and a child on the way—that is, until a stunning loss upended his life. Now he’s working temp jobs, terrified of commitment, and struggling to put himself back out into the world. But there to nurture Chino is a coterie of new and old friends and lovers who form a protective web around him. Closest to him are Metal Matt, a red-haired metalhead with a soft spot for Courtney Love and a rangy dog named Sabbath, and Mike and Kay, a couple whose literary edge is matched only by the success of their secret OnlyFans account. As Chino begins to date more men and women—and to open himself up again to love—his bonds with those around him grow both rich and profound. Like a fern blooming in the wake of a forest fire, new life comes after even the most devastating upheaval. With gorgeous, heartrending detail and a seemingly infinite catalogue of tender, unexpected interactions, Tomas Moniz has created a striking mosaic of desire and belonging. An anthem to both queer and platonic love, All Friends Are Necessary evinces the wonder of friendship and the joy of giving yourself up to the essential force of community. "Vibrant, alive, and absolutely devastating in its beauty, All Friends Are Necessary is like a late-night phone call with your best friend—exuberant, confessional, and above all, honest."—Chelsea Bieker, author of Godshot and Madwoman

Download or read book Seeing Silence written by Pete McBride and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world ever more congested and polluted with both toxins and noise, award-winning photographer Pete McBride takes readers on a once-in-a-lifetime escape to find places of peace and quiet—a pole-to-pole, continent-by-continent quest for the soul. We tend to think of silence as the absence of sound, but it is actually the void where we can hear the sublime notes of nature. In this National Outdoor Book Award winning work, photographer Pete McBride reveals the wonders of these hushed places in spectacular imagery—from the thin-air flanks of Mount Everest to the depths of the Grand Canyon, from the high-altitude vistas of the Atacama to the African savannah, and from the Antarctic Peninsula to the flowing waters of the Ganges and Nile. These places remind us of the magic of being “truly away” and how such places are vanishing. Often showing beauty from vantages where no other photographer has ever stood, this is a seven-continent visual tour of global quietude—and the power in nature’s own sounds—that will both inspire and calm.
