Download or read book Cell to Cell Mapping written by C.S. Hsu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, I have been interested in global analysis of nonlinear systems. The original interest stemmed from the study of snap-through stability and jump phenomena in structures. For systems of this kind, where there exist multiple stable equilibrium states or periodic motions, it is important to examine the domains of attraction of these responses in the state space. It was through work in this direction that the cell-to-cell mapping methods were introduced. These methods have received considerable development in the last few years, and have also been applied to some concrete problems. The results look very encouraging and promising. However, up to now, the effort of developing these methods has been by a very small number of people. There was, therefore, a suggestion that the published material, scattered now in various journal articles, could perhaps be pulled together into book form, thus making it more readily available to the general audience in the field of nonlinear oscillations and nonlinear dynamical systems. Conceivably, this might facilitate getting more people interested in working on this topic. On the other hand, there is always a question as to whether a topic (a) holds enough promise for the future, and (b) has gained enough maturity to be put into book form. With regard to (a), only the future will tell. With regard to (b), I believe that, from the point of view of both foundation and methodology, the methods are far from mature.

Book excerpt: From the author of Alice, I Think comes a riveting memoir of addiction and recovery. Susan Juby started out as a bright and creative student with an innate ability to write incredible stories. At the age of thirteen her life began to unravel, and like many teens, she turned to alcohol to get her through the awkward stages of trying to find her own unique identity and fit in with her peers at school. In this revealing memoir, she details the painful and sometimes funny experiences of trying to be clean and sober at a time when most young adults are just starting their drinking careers. Juby also looks into how the situation has changed for young people washing up on the shores of addiction today through a series of interviews with recovering addicts and alcoholics. Told with honesty and Juby’s wry wit, Nice Recovery is a candid memoir from one of Canada’s most beloved writers.

Book Polio Voices

Download or read book Polio Voices written by Julie K. Silver and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2007-08-30 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating many rare photographs from the family albums of survivors who tell their stories, Harvard professor Julie Silver, M.D., and historian Daniel Wilson help readers understand the sheer terror that gripped parents of young children every spring and summer during the first half of the 20th century as polio epidemics ran rampant. Interviewed as part of the Polio Oral History Project directed by Silver and funded by Harvard, foundations, and private donors, the people featured in this book describe what is arguably the most feared scourge of modern times. Testimonies are included from people who worked in polio wards, as well as from those involved in worldwide eradication efforts. The book also addresses the emergence of the polio and disability rights movement, the challenges of post-polio syndrome, and the state of polio research and developments today. And it explores the concern that polio could return in an even more vicious form as a result of bioterrorism.
