Download or read book The Awoken written by Katelyn Monroe Howes and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Awoken is a phenomenal story—filled with action, romance, plot twists, and a few big juicy reveals!" —Issa Rae A cinematic, speculative debut about a woman who undergoes cryogenic preservation at the time of her death and wakes up a century later in a world where her very life is a crime. When Alabine Rivers, a politically active young woman with a bright career and romance ahead of her, finds out the devastating news that she has terminal cancer, the only thing that gives her solace is the possibility of a second life through the emerging field of cryogenics. A century later, scientists have indeed discovered how to bring back the dead from preservation, but humanity has been locked in a philosophical battle over the ethics of this new Godlike power, a battle that has turned violent: those who are resurrected, the Awoken, have been declared illegal and are to be shot on sight. This is the world Alabine is brought into by the Resurrectionists, an underground militia fighting for the rights of the Awoken. Finding herself in a completely unfamiliar world, and one where she is an outsider for the first time in her life, Alabine must figure out how to survive and determine her place in this new world, all the while being haunted by lucid memories of her previous life and the man she loved. The Awoken is a gripping, action-packed story full of plot twists and high emotion. It's a look at prejudice, complicity, the fears that tear us apart, and the hope that can bring us together.

Book excerpt: The year is 2103, and the "United" States separated into the Red States and Blue States of America over half of a century ago. The only Purple position remaining holds the most power, and she has eyes in everyone's houses and a hand in every child's education. Dr. Drosera, the CEO of American Education, helps keep the graduation rate high and the unemployment rate low, so she is widely respected and trusted without suspicion. In what is supposed to be her final year, two seemingly incorruptible doctoral students are chosen for a one-year internship to determine who will take her place as Purple. Unfortunately for both of them, Dr. Drosera is not content with leaving at the end of the year. Like the strikingly beautiful carnivorous plant for which she is named, she will trap anyone in her way. “Author Photo” Kate Deemer spent the majority of her childhood in West Virginia and lives in Charleston, South Carolina. She served her community as a high school English teacher for fourteen years. She began writing Logged In: The Foundation in 2020 when she saw the toll COVID had on students and teachers, predicting many educators would leave the classroom as a result. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pretty Pink Ribbon: A Breast Cancer Survivor's Hurricane Katrina Experience By: Joyce Washington Ivery The author was inspired to write this book as a result of her horrific experiences during hurricane Katrina. In March, 1989, Joyce Washington Ivery was diagnosed with breast cancer. One year later she had a saline implant placed in her chest cavity. The implant was removed in August, 2005, fifteen years later, and replaced with a tummy flap. While in the hospital, hurricane Katrina came along with its forceful winds and flooding waters. Joyce was all alone and forced to spend one night in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Amidst the thousands of people there, she and her cousin crossed paths; and he and his family drove her to Natchez, MS, September 1, 2005, where she has lived since that time. The challenges of salvaging whatever possible and moving to a new city and state were stupendous but not surmountable. In 1994, she organized Edna B. and Joyce Fay Washington Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. And on May 25, 2019, the Foundation convened its Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LAin celebration of twenty-five (25) years of service. The very first program organized by the Foundation was a support group – Sisters In Touch – which to this day still exists. Eighteen of the survivors who are actively involved shared their thoughts about how the group has positively affected their lives. Preceding each of the twelve chapters is heartfelt, descriptive poetry; beginning with “The Pretty Pink Ribbon” and ending with “Eight Forty Six”.
