Book My Predicament

Download or read book My Predicament written by Jibrin Idris Inuwa and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S There are various modes of contracting HIV, but the most common one is through sex. People judge HIV carriers differently, most thinking that those who are HIV positive are promiscuous. This way of thinking can put HIV-positive carriers in a very difficult position. Knowing what others think about them often forces people living with HIV to hide their status or commit suicide. My Predicament - A Struggle with HIV narrates the story of Mba Ali, a journalist with Beauty magazine, who contracted HIV from Christy, a deported prostitute from Italy. Back home, Christy knew she was HIV positive, but her admirers did not. The fear of going for an HIV test and being told outright that she was positive, and would be discriminated and stigmatized against, kept her away from clinics until her death. Christy was a tall, beautiful woman, and as HIV was not written on her body, men chased and paid to have her. Unaware of her HIV status, Mba Ali and others befriended Christy, and were infected with the virus. Mba, encouraged by his wife and friends, started the right medication, outlived Christy, and would live positively for the rest of his life with the virus. Mba abandoned his career to pool resources and build a five-hundred bed ward, named Love Ward, to save lives. His inspiring story shows how an HIV-positive diagnosis turned into a positive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are our lives meaningful, or meaningless? Is our inevitable death a bad thing? Would immortality be an improvement? Would it be better, all things considered, to hasten our deaths by suicide? Many people ask these big questions -- and some people are plagued by them. Surprisingly, analytic philosophers have said relatively little about these important questions about the meaning of life. When they have tackled the big questions, they have tended, like popular writers, to offer comforting, optimistic answers. The Human Predicament invites readers to take a clear-eyed and unfettered view of the human condition. David Benatar here offers a substantial, but not unmitigated, pessimism about the central questions of human existence. He argues that while our lives can have some meaning, we are ultimately the insignificant beings that we fear we might be. He maintains that the quality of life, although less bad for some than for others, leaves much to be desired in even the best cases. Worse, death is generally not a solution; in fact, it exacerbates rather than mitigates our cosmic meaninglessness. While it can release us from suffering, it imposes another cost - annihilation. This state of affairs has nuanced implications for how we should think about many things, including immortality and suicide, and how we should think about the possibility of deeper meaning in our lives. Ultimately, this thoughtful, provocative, and deeply candid treatment of life's big questions will interest anyone who has contemplated why we are here, and what the answer means for how we should live.

Download or read book Humanizing Leadership written by Hugh MacLeod and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not a leadership guide. It’s not some leadership 101 class that will draw you a picture of what a leader is supposed to look like and how you can learn to fit that mould. This is a book that will change the way you look at leadership and at yourself. It strives to hold a mirror up to your beliefs about who you are, and leadership in general, to help you discover what sort of leader you were naturally destined to be. While this book uses leadership science authored by academics to anchor principles and concepts, paired with anecdotal insights and perspective garnered through a wealth of professional and executive leadership experience, it should be treated as an instrument for creating dialogue and discussion, and formulating the necessary questions to put your own assumptions to the test. Reflection fuels, people matter, and relationships make a difference. These three threads are used to weave a tapestry of self-discovery and personal growth.

Download or read book Mohawk Interruptus written by Audra Simpson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mohawk Interruptus is a bold challenge to dominant thinking in the fields of Native studies and anthropology. Combining political theory with ethnographic research among the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke, a reserve community in what is now southwestern Quebec, Audra Simpson examines their struggles to articulate and maintain political sovereignty through centuries of settler colonialism. The Kahnawà:ke Mohawks are part of the Haudenosaunee or Iroquois Confederacy. Like many Iroquois peoples, they insist on the integrity of Haudenosaunee governance and refuse American or Canadian citizenship. Audra Simpson thinks through this politics of refusal, which stands in stark contrast to the politics of cultural recognition. Tracing the implications of refusal, Simpson argues that one sovereign political order can exist nested within a sovereign state, albeit with enormous tension around issues of jurisdiction and legitimacy. Finally, Simpson critiques anthropologists and political scientists, whom, she argues, have too readily accepted the assumption that the colonial project is complete. Belying that notion, Mohawk Interruptus calls for and demonstrates more robust and evenhanded forms of inquiry into indigenous politics in the teeth of settler governance.

Honestly, during an unthinkable crisis, wouldn’t it be a relief if your wants and your fears were among the top priorities being addressed? And wouldn’t you like to know that the attention includes both you and your loved ones? Imagine how comforting it would be to have the same nurse, nurse aide, social worker and others give you care for the entire time you or your loved one is on service. And after the crisis is over and all the sympathy calls have subsided, think about the reassuring comfort received from someone who stays in contact with you for over a year after the crisis is over. Author Rick Schneider reveals through his own eye-opening experiences and observations that when time appears to be limited, hospice care gives you the assistance to do what is most important to you. Simple Human Compassion will illustrate as nothing else can how touch, not technology, is what is needed at the end of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bundle includes the first three books of the Mortis Vampire Series. Death Beckons: Working late one night, Natalie Pierce is kidnapped by a creature that looks like a harmless old man, but is something far more terrifying. Waking up in a creepy mausoleum, she is forced to endure three nights of indescribable agony. Her life is forever altered when she is transformed into a monster of myth and legend; a vampire. Lonely and full of despair, she comes face to face with the irresistible and enigmatic Lord Lucentio. Justice bringer for the European Vampire Council, Luc has been sent to Australia to kill Natalie's maker, but someone has already beaten him to it. He quickly discovers that Nat is far from an ordinary fledgling. He suspects that she is Mortis, a figure of both hope and dread among their kind. Natalie is propelled into a dark and mysterious underworld that takes her far away from her hometown of Brisbane. Her arrival was foretold long ago and her fate is already sealed. Nat's entire species is in danger and it is her job to save them. She desperately wants to escape from the burden that has been thrust upon her, but she is inextricably linked to a two thousand year old prophecy. An unknown enemy has begun to whittle down their already limited numbers. If Nat fails to accept her destiny, all vampires will soon cease to exist. Death Embraces: Natalie Pierce awakens to find herself buried in a box that strongly resembles a coffin. After some initial confusion she remembers that she has become a member of a very exclusive club; the living dead. Natalie has three important tasks ahead of her. One: escape from her underground prison. Two: hunt down the creature responsible for imprisoning her. Three: discover who or what is behind the cause of the sentient shadows that only she can see. As the long awaited and highly unanticipated Mortis, Nat has abilities that no other vampire has ever before possessed. She must utilize the strangeness that sets her apart from her new kin to fulfill a prophecy that was written over two thousand years ago. The ancient text predicts that it is her destiny to wipe out the vast bulk of her own kind. Despite all of the weird and wacky powers that she has gained, not even Mortis can avoid her fate. Death Deceives: From the moment she’d been turned into Mortis, Natalie Pierce had been fated to come face to face with the first vampire ever created. Hideously transformed over thousands of years by the diseased blood that runs through his veins, the First had created an army of grey skinned imps. His plan is to enslave humanity and to turn them into a vast herd of cattle to feed his offspring. Nat and her friends are all that stands between the humans and the bat faced, orange eyed imps. Aside from the overwhelming odds against them, Natalie foresaw an even bigger danger. As vampires, they were all highly susceptible to becoming possessed by their shadows. Once that happened, they could then be turned into imps by the First. Luc, Geordie, Igor and Gregor would be doomed from the instant they set foot inside the First’s lair. A recent prophecy had foretold that an army would come to Natalie’s aid. With many of her new kin already possessed by their shadows, Nat was uncertain where this mystery army would come from. She could only hope that the prophecy would come true. If it didn't, she would be facing the First and his growing army of ravenous offspring alone.

Book Motherhood and Single Lone Parenting A 21st Century Perspective

Download or read book Motherhood and Single Lone Parenting A 21st Century Perspective written by Maki Matapanyane and published by Demeter Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century sustains one significant commonality with the decades of the preceding century. The majority of individuals parenting on their own and heading one-parent families continue to be mothers. Even so, current trends in globalization (economic, political, cultural) along with technological advancement, shifts in political, economic and social policy, contemporary demographic shifts, changing trends in the labor sector linked to global economics, and developments in legislative and judicial output, all signify the distinctiveness of the current moment with regard to family patterns and social norms. Seeking to contribute to an existing body of literature focused on single motherhood and lone parenting in the 20th century, this collection explores and illuminates a more recent landscape of 21st century debates, policies and experiences surrounding single motherhood and one-parent headed families.
