Book excerpt: 'My Poetry Depicts You' is an anthology of Kurdish contemporary poetry, which is rare in the sense that there have not been many similar attempts before. It contains 126 poems by 18 poets whose work covers over 100-year period. It is a general introduction to the contemporary Kurdish poetry and its unique features, which may not be familiar to English readers. These poems are from different time periods, under various oppressive Iraqi regimes. Most of the poets included were active during the former ruling Baath Party. Three of the writers, Dilshad Meriwani, Mala Ali and Barzan Osman, were executed under the Baath regime. Abubakir Ali was allegedly killed by Kurdish security services, and Irfan Ahmed died under suspicious circumstances whilst in Kurdish detention. For the remainder, with the exception of three, all the other poets fled for international protection as a consequence of their work.I have listed the poets in this anthology below, starting with two poems by Nali (1797-1869) to provide a flavour of classical Kurdish poetry, which may not be as familiar to English readers. Book Trouvailles My Moments of Yugen

Download or read book Trouvailles My Moments of Yugen written by Shuvashree Chowdhury and published by Cinnamonteal Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trouvaille (origin French) means a chance encounter with something wonderful, a windfall, a lucky find. Whether it's stumbling across a hidden back street, discovering a quaint cafe, or connecting with a local during a journey-the joy they bring is what you call trouvaille. Yūgen (origin Japanese) is a profound and mysterious sense of the beauty of the universe and the sad beauty of human suffering-an awareness that triggers emotional responses too deep and powerful for words. Trouvailles: My Moments of Yūgen is Shuvashree Chowdhury's second collection of poems. They are crafted from the physical and mental journeys she undertook to find herself. One moment she is navigating the ghats and galis of the holy city of Banaras; in another she is gazing at the mighty Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling and Kalimpong; one moment she is experiencing the calm of Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan; in another she is walking along the Hooghly in pastoral Bengal. Then there is travel- in the form of contemplation-undertaken during the Covid-forced lockdown. The poems are not so much about the destinations, but a fresh way of looking at places we already knew about. They are an optimistic and positive reflection on life and death; love and relationships; rejection and resilience.

Book The Math Campers

  • Author : Dan Chiasson
  • Publisher : National Geographic Books

  • ISBN : 0593317742
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book The Math Campers written by Dan Chiasson and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A father and husband's meditation on love, adolescence, and the mysterious mechanisms of poetic creation, from the acclaimed poet. The poet's art is revealed in stages in this "making-of" book, where we watch as poems take shape--first as dreams or memories, then as drafts, and finally as completed works set loose on the world. In the long poem "Must We Mean What We Say," a woman reader narrates in prose the circumstances behind poems and snippets of poems she receives in letters from a stranger. Who made up whom? Chiasson, an acclaimed poetry critic, has invented a remarkable structure where the reader and a poet speak to one another, across the void of silence and mystery. He is also the father of teenaged sons, and this volume continues the autobiographical arc of his prior, celebrated volumes. One long section is about the age of thirteen and the dawning of desire, while the title poem looks at the crucial age of fifteen and the existential threat of climate change and gun violence, which alters the calculus of adolescence. Though the outlook is bleak, these poems register the glories of our moment: that there are places where boys can kiss each other and not be afraid; that small communities are rousing and taking care of each other; that teenagers have mobilized for a better world. All of these works emerge from the secretive imagination of a father as he measures his own adolescence against that of his sons and explores the complex bedrock of marriage. Chiasson sees a perilous world both navigated and enriched by the passionate young and by the parents--and poets--who care for them.

Book Women s Voices from Kurdistan A Selection of Kurdish Poetry

Download or read book Women s Voices from Kurdistan A Selection of Kurdish Poetry written by Clémence Scalbert Yücel and published by Transnational Press London. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of war and violence, social-political as well as lingual repressions, and the challenges presented by a patriarchal society, Kurdish poetesses have been creating meaningful work throughout the centuries. This collection of translated poems brings to light some of these underrepresented female writers, whose work has been essential to the development of Kurdish poetry. Representing various Kurdish regions and dialects, this volume of selected poems touches upon themes such as sexuality, violence, gender domination, intimacy, fantasy, and romantic love. While this collection offers illuminating insights into the work of Kurdish poetesses, it is the hope of its creators, the Exeter Kurdish Translation Initiative, that it inspires further translations and publication of Kurdish literature. This beautiful and groundbreaking collection of English translations from Gorani, Sorani, Kurmanji, and Arabic was achieved through an innovative collaborative translation project in the Centre for Kurdish Studies, University of Exeter. From the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, it expresses women’s voices on politics, nationalism, gender, love, science, education, and everyday Kurdishness in memory, elegy, dream, and discourse. See such haunting lines from Gulîzer as “May those who have stayed not say the leaving is easy./ May those who have left not say the staying is simple.” Or “When two rivers separate/ How do they part their water?” Anyone interested in women’s poetry, diaspora, translation, and transnation will want to hear these poems. – Regenia Gagnier FBA, author of Literatures of Liberalization: Global Circulation and the Long Nineteenth Century and editor, The Global Circulation Project The vivid image of love, lost, hope, beauty, desire, violence, pain, and suffering that are sketched in this book enchant and attract readers to enter into a more intimate lives of Kurdish women. In this exquisite collection of poems written by Kurdish women and translated into English for the first time, we are exposed to a more imaginative way of hearing Kurdish women’s voices. It is in the interstices of lived words and the lifeworld that Kurdish women poets candidly dream freedom and suggest ways to move beyond all forms of oppression and violence. – Shahrzad Mojab, Professor, University of Toronto and the editor of Women of Non-State Nation: The Kurds. Book excerpt: A mix of experiences that you will feel, emotions to make you smile, cry, laugh, and sometimes, weep. Who knows where my poems may take you or what emotions you will feel. The Journey has just begun and will venture through the many unpublished poems yet to come. Some will make you think in thought-provoking ways, others will astound you with the twists. Other poems will make you relate to the experiences you may have had or felt in situations of your life. So the journey begins. This book I wrote for children of all ages from 9 to 99. I hope they are deemed suitable for those who read it. Obviously there has to be some parent guidance for those who are at a very young age. There's a whole range of different experiences that I guess most people will and can be able tolerate to, my sense of humor can sometimes get me into all sorts of trouble and I guess that's why I see the funny side of life. The way I see it is that life can throw an awful lot of trials and tribulations any given time, and let's face it I have had my share of them. Any way kids please enjoy what I have written, and parents if you feel any of the poems are unsuitable please don't read them to the children. The Poems are mainly for older children and teenagers, I hope they make you all understand and maybe smile. Many thanks Terry.

Book excerpt: This collection of poems is largely autobiographical, telling the turning points in a life that began in war-torn Vietnam. Somehow, unlike many, Teresa and her family survived, although her parents were separated for a long time. She, her brother, and her mother escaped Vietnam in a ship crowded with frightened immigrants, and in time they settled in California, bringing with them their nightmares, their memories, their history and culture. Family is a recurring and insistent theme in this book. Teresa devotes her art to her grandmother, her mother, her brother, her son. This is the story of a refugee family who settled in California, bringing with them their nightmares, their memories, their history and culture. “Teresa Mei Chuc’s poems speak from the heart of one woman’s experience, and expand beyond the personal to reveal and record the common experienceof multitudes.... The ‘American experience,’ what is it? Chuc’s RedThread offers us all another piece in this difficult puzzle.” -Lowell Jaeger, Editor, New Poets of the American West

Book Fantasy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ben Fama
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 9781937027476
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Fantasy written by Ben Fama and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Ben Fama's FANTASY operates in a world of Internet, glamor, and lonely 21st century adulthood, through various other sorts of intimacies that happen through global production. Fama's language and affect flatten desire while they maintain a tone of struggle and longing. Fantasy works at the question of how to spend time while alive in a humanity close to burnout, where the value of one's own labor is as inconclusive as the profits of intimacy. The need for things butts up against the living nihilism of late capitalism. "How did Fama invent a tone so perfect and icy, so equal to our times?" Wayne Koestenbaum "Sometimes something gets written and it surprises you, though it feels familiar. An early- twenty-first century decadence with its adderalls. Still the colloquials and the coteries of the New York School, but now with selfies, with crying selfies even. And klout scores. And there is fashion week, the Miami, the Los Angeles. Tans. Pools. I read FANTASY again and again, thinking I could learn to recite its spell on my own. It is a book about an end. An end of our economic empire. Of the fantastical expansion of income. And the poems here just keep going. They keep going to work. They plan what to do when one encounters an active shooter situation. Sort of. Because there is no plan really that makes sense except maybe to keep showing up to work stoned." Juliana Spahr "Ben Fama's softly amalgamated new book, FANTASY, quietly elicits states of mind that we do and do not continue to inhabit. Memory traces, evacuations of past ruins pile up under present day linguistic and textual edifices. The socio-political erupts gently at the edges of fanboy/fangirl communiques in which "fundamentalists decried jolie for using her wealth to surmount death and god." In FANTASY, Fama uses his poetic intelligence to override dilemmas of understanding, and agitate all our ADLs (activities of daily living) no small task for these overripe poetic times." Kim Rosenfield "Fama has many faces, and fame comes in many sorts and sizes from the one- week notoriety of the cover story to the splendor of an everlasting name (I may be quoting), i.e., Anais Nin commiserates with Trent Reznor about the fact that Kate Moss's tan lines are, right now, more famous than either one of them. FANTASY is a Zipcar to cruise by such commiseration on the way to a resort Google maps can't locate, but that "if you can't afford it," at least you can "affect it," and there's still "Glamour all night." Bruce Hainley"
