Book excerpt: Discover what it takes to survive the worst life has to offer. Hans Gruber's life defines the term, "survival of the fittest". Strategically utilizing every ounce of his physical and mental capacity, Hans perseveres through: a chaotic, dysfunctional childhood; the horrors of war; seven years of abuse as a Russian POW; and the trials and tribulations of immigration. His stamina, courage, and ingenuity enable him to overcome the forces of evil confronting him in the form of Nazism, Communism, and the occult. Hans' journey spans eighty-nine years from 1924 to the present, and it represents a microcosm of the aftermath of WWI and WWII. The U.S.A. is a nation of immigrants, a melting pot of ethnicity, and a composition of its parts. Hans Gruber's life is a small, unique component of that composition, but all Americans can enjoy my Odyssey thru Hell because it depicts one man's triumphant quest against all odds to live the American Dream.

Book excerpt: I was only seventeen years old when the knock on the door came late one night. The French police barged in, arresting me and my father as members of the French Resistance. After months of incarceration in French prisons, two thousand inmates were jammed into twenty rail cars. Our destination was Buchenwald, the most horrific camp in Nazi Germany, where we were viewed by our SS keepers as expendable sub-humans and forced to work as slave laborers. I was beaten and starved. I witnessed brutal tortures and senseless murders. But I survived.

Book From Incarceration to Repatriation

Download or read book From Incarceration to Repatriation written by Susan C. I. Grunewald and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Incarceration to Repatriation explores the lives and memories of the nearly 1.5 million German POWs who were held by the Soviet Union during and after World War II and released in phases through 1956, seven years longer than the prisoners of any other Allied nation. Susan C. I. Grunewald argues that Soviet leadership deliberately kept able-bodied German POWs to supplement their labor force after the end of the war. The Soviet Union lost 27 million citizens and a quarter of its physical assets during the war, motivating Soviet leadership to harness the labor of German POWs for as long as possible. Engaging with recently declassified documents in former Soviet archives, archival material from multiple German governments, as well as innovative use of digital humanities methods and geographic information system (GIS) mapping, Grunewald demonstrates that Soviet authorities detained German POWs primarily for economic rather than punitive reasons. In fact, the GIS mapping of the historical materials makes it clear that most of the four thousand POW camps across the USSR were strategically located near industrial, infrastructure, and natural resource sites that were critical to postwar economic reconstruction. From Incarceration to Repatriation is the first book to draw together the distinct fields of Soviet and German history to provide a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of German POW captivity in the USSR during and after World War II. Attending to the ways that the memory of German POWs remains in circulation in both the former Soviet Union and Germany, Grunewald tracks the political repercussions of war commemoration.

Book excerpt: One man's journey into a ten year living nightmare and his astonishing true story of return. Was it an insane delusion or a Satanic deception? This is a tale both incredible and terrible, yet studded with life affirming humor and hope-filled insights into the spiritual realities that surround us.From the first chapter: "...It was then that god showed up. The divine being that had come into my off-campus farm house at Duke one and a half years earlier now reappeared. Then it had been bathed in shimmering light, filled with promise. Now it simply was there. More real than the floor and walls. More real than me. I could sense it with every fiber of my being, but I couldn't see it. Yet, its presence was in this moment more complete than any of the encounters I had had with it since its first appearance. I knew full well its past displeasure with me and shrank inwardly at realizing that it knew also how ignobly I had failed once again to find the way to rise into its higher life..." So began the Descent. Throughout history untold millions have tragically tumbled down the rabbit hole of insanity into the unsearchable depths of a shattered mind. Few have ever returned to tell about it. Part comical romp through the countercultural landscape of the '60s, part expos of the "dark side of the force," Rescued from Hell is a cross between "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and Dante's "Inferno." It is the bizarre tale of an unsuspecting spiritual voyager caught in a spider web of New Age "spirituality" and cocooned in a terrifying, soul-destroying nether land that lasted for a decade. Was it an insane delusion or a satanic deception? It is simply too incredible to have been imagined...

Book Homer s Iliad and Odyssey

Download or read book Homer s Iliad and Odyssey written by Alberto Manguel and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A worldwide exploration of the history, purpose, and inescapable influence of the Iliad and the Odyssey that will inspire readers to think anew about Homer’s work No one knows whether Homer was a real person, but there is no doubt that the epic poems assembled under his name are foundations of Western literature. The Iliad and the Odyssey—with their tales of the Trojan War, Achilles, Odysseus and Penelope, the Cyclops, the beautiful Helen of Troy, and the petulant gods—have inspired us for over two and a half millennia and influenced writers from Plato to Virgil, Pope to Joyce, and Dante to Margaret Atwood. In this graceful and sweeping book, Alberto Manguel traces the lineage of Homer’s poems. He examines their original purpose, either as allegory or record of history; surveys the challenges the pagan poems presented to the early Christian world; and looks at their reception after the Reformation through the present day. In this revised and expanded edition, Manguel ignites new ways of thinking about these classic works.
