All the interesting men they meet get tossed around by this pack of barracudas. Adding to the mix are some drug deals, a kidnapping, insurance fraud, and secrets from the past, making life very complicated, indeed. ----With grit, humor, action, intrigue and romance, My Mother the Man-Eater is a redemptive story about a woman whose search for meaning in life sends her straight into...the arms of God.

Book excerpt: “Pure, perfect suspense. Jack Warner has crafted a riveting tale of man and beast” (Stephen Coonts, New York Times–bestselling author). Most hunts end in a death. This hunt begins with one--Lanelle Jackson’s. A wild tiger has escaped its cargo truck and now roams the dense forests of the Appalachian Mountains. When deer and wild boar run out, the tiger turns its growing hunger towards man. Now it has a taste for easy prey. With a body-count on the rise and the media coming in, Sheriff Grady Brickhouse calls upon Jim Graham, a tiger hunter trained in India to end the man-eater’s killing spree. However, Graham is retired, and at 73 his body isn’t as fast as it used to be. The only edge Graham holds now is a nine-year-old boy who has somehow bonded with the tiger. But, it’s a bond that makes him protective of the beast, even as it circles ever closer to hurting the ones he loves. This hunt will probably be Graham’s last. The question is, will it end with the tiger’s death or his own? In MANEATER, author Jack Warner crafts a tightly suspenseful adventure novel, where death hides in the shadows of small town life. It will have you straining to hear the low growl of the wild before it's too late...

Book The Disobedient Writer

Download or read book The Disobedient Writer written by Nancy A. Walker and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, women who aspired to write had to enter a largely male literary tradition that offered few, if any, literary forms in which to express their perspectives on lived experience. Since the nineteenth century, however, women writers and readers have been producing "disobedient" counter-narratives that, while clearly making reference to the original texts, overturn their basic assumptions. This book looks at both canonical and non-canonical works, over a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres, that offer counter-readings of familiar Western narratives. Nancy Walker begins by probing women's revisions of two narrative traditions pervasive in Western culture: the biblical story of Adam and Eve, and the traditional fairy tales that have served as paradigms of women's behavior and expectations. She goes on to examine the works of a wide range of writers, from contemporaries Marilynne Robinson, Ursula Le Guin, Anne Sexton, Fay Weldon, Angela Carter, and Margaret Atwood to precursors Caroline Kirkland, Fanny Fern, Mary De Morgan, Mary Louisa Molesworth, Edith Nesbit, and Evelyn Sharp.

Book The World of Myth

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Adams Leeming
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1992-02-27
  • ISBN : 0199762724
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book The World of Myth written by David Adams Leeming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-02-27 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hercules, Zeus, Thor, Gilgamesh--these are the figures that leap to mind when we think of myth. But to David Leeming, myths are more than stories of deities and fantastic beings from non-Christian cultures. Myth is at once the most particular and the most universal feature of civilization, representing common concerns that each society voices in its own idiom. Whether an Egyptian story of creation or the big-bang theory of modern physics, myth is metaphor, mirroring our deepest sense of ourselves in relation to existence itself. Now, in The World of Myth, Leeming provides a sweeping anthology of myths, ranging from ancient Egypt and Greece to the Polynesian islands and modern science. We read stories of great floods from the ancient Babylonians, Hebrews, Chinese, and Mayans; tales of apocalypse from India, the Norse, Christianity, and modern science; myths of the mother goddess from Native American Hopi culture and James Lovelock's Gaia. Leeming has culled myths from Aztec, Greek, African, Australian Aboriginal, Japanese, Moslem, Hittite, Celtic, Chinese, and Persian cultures, offering one of the most wide-ranging collections of what he calls the collective dreams of humanity. More important, he has organized these myths according to a number of themes, comparing and contrasting how various societies have addressed similar concerns, or have told similar stories. In the section on dying gods, for example, both Odin and Jesus sacrifice themselves to renew the world, each dying on a tree. Such traditions, he proposes, may have their roots in societies of the distant past, which would ritually sacrifice their kings to renew the tribe. In The World of Myth, David Leeming takes us on a journey "not through a maze of falsehood but through a marvellous world of metaphor," metaphor for "the story of the relationship between the known and the unknown, both around us and within us." Fantastic, tragic, bizarre, sometimes funny, the myths he presents speak of the most fundamental human experience, a part of what Joseph Campbell called "the wonderful song of the soul's high adventure."

Book The Native American Story Book Volume Five Stories of the American Indians for Children

This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native Americans did not write down or record their history, so we have to find out about their past in other ways. They used games, myths, dance, and impersonation to teach the children of their history and ways of life. Their storytelling was filled with family, heritage and stories of the earth. It is through storytelling, that the rich history of the Native American tribes is alive and well today. It has been shared and preserved and still pays tribute to fallen heroes of the past. It is through these glimpses into the past, and these stories much like the ones that are contained in this book, that you can see what a proud heritage they possess and how in tune with the Earth Native Americans really are. Included in this collection are: The Story of the Land of Northern Lights, The Legend of the Bear Family, The Origin of Summer and Winter, The Story of the Buffalo-painted Lodges, The Story of the Camp of the Ghosts, Creation of the First Indians, The Story of the Little Burnt Face, Origin of the Sweat Lodge, Rabbit and the Moon Man, Ghost of the White Deer, Unktomi and the Arrowheads, The Story of the First Pine Trees, Raven and His Grandmother, The Story of the Snow Man, The Origin of Medicine, and many more.

Book His Banner over Me Is Love

Download or read book His Banner over Me Is Love written by Mary Nyambura Muchiri Ph.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-08-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a brief autobiography, not in any way trying to summarize my life, but rather to highlight points of Gods intervention. Coming from a poor rural family in Kenya, Africa, I had no reason to expect much from life. However, my father believed in me at a time when women were just expected to serve men within the home, so he decided to send me to school. Having been taught about God at home, I wanted to know more about Him when I went to school. In 1957, I had a personal encounter with Him, and my life was never the same. I came to identify myself with the Apostle Paul when he says: For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to...all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also as to one abnormally born. For I am the least...but by the grace of God, I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect (1 Corinthians 15:3-10). The book is my attempt to pass on to the younger generation what I have received from the Lord. I have experienced many miracles that culminated in my coming to America, where God has continued to surprise me, almost on a daily basis. I want my readers to know that though they may be the least in eyes of the world, once they put their faith in the God of the Bible, His grace will be sufficient in all of lifes circumstances. He is no respecter of persons. He blesses men, women, and children, black, white, slave and free!
