Book The Son of My Father The Memoir of a Preaching Minister Educator

Download or read book The Son of My Father The Memoir of a Preaching Minister Educator written by John W Waters, PhD. and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book As a sickly child, John W Waters was told he would not live to five years old. His family, large and dysfunctional, was never any help, especially his father, who said John would never amount to much even if he did live to see adulthood. At three, John’s love of reading took over, and with each year that passed, he defied all the odds, not only living long enough to see himself become an adult but earning top grades and graduating at the top of his class in high school. His father never attended his commencement. As his passion for religion and education grew, John earned his PhD in the Hebrew Bible and taught at several higher education institutions, ending his academic career as a chairperson of the Biblical Studies Department at the ITC in Atlanta. John’s passion for the Lord is what drove him to begin a new career in ministry, beginning as a youth minister and moving up through the ranks until he retired as a senior minister emeritus at the Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church. Receiving many honors and awards throughout his life for his community and religious service, John succeeded in a world where most thought he would fail, and now writes his inspiring journey in this one-of-a-kind memoir for those who were always told they would never succeed. For those who see themselves as unworthy. In the eyes of God, you are, and with hard work, determination, and a strong faith, your journey can be just as fruitful. About the Author John W Waters, PhD., enjoys reading, listening to good music, cooking, and writing poetry. After living for more than eight decades, he no longer actively engages in civic and community activities as he had been.

Book My Son a Gift from God

Download or read book My Son a Gift from God written by Jack Pusch and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book to honor my son Bill. He was truly a unique person, and I want the world to know how special he really was. He was an excellent husband, father, and a son we all usually only dream of having. Not flawless, but darn near. Being responsible, doing good work, meeting all of our obligations, while being totally honest about everything, drove him. He said he and I loved each other as father and son and that we were also best friends. We really were. I have strong opinions, and so did he, but we were so close that we could discuss anything that was happening and enjoy our togetherness. His concern for Lisa, Alexa, and Ben about every aspect of their lives was his first duty as he saw it. He personified the words honesty, fairness and decency. A real man's man he was. He loved our country so much that he voluntarily returned to the Army for Operation Desert Storm. I thought my son had given enough, losing the lower lobe of the right lung. He told me about convincing the doctor to take him back because he said it was his duty. Fortunately he was sent to Hawaii instead of Kuwait. After diabetes was found he joined the Army National Guard, and later the Army Reserve so he could again have a military connection. After he had to stop flying because of diabetes and knew he could never fly a Marine Corps Fighter Aircraft, it was hard for him to accept. I guess his thinking was that being an Army JAG Corps Officer was about as good as it could be. His brilliant mind, common sense, humble soul, and deeply rooted Christian Faith made him a wonderful man, and me a proud father.

Book At Home in the World

Download or read book At Home in the World written by Joyce Maynard and published by Picador. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of Labor Day With a New Preface When it was first published in 1998, At Home in the World set off a furor in the literary world and beyond. Joyce Maynard's memoir broke a silence concerning her relationship—at age eighteen—with J.D. Salinger, the famously reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye, then age fifty-three, who had read a story she wrote for The New York Times in her freshman year of college and sent her a letter that changed her life. Reviewers called her book "shameless" and "powerful" and its author was simultaneously reviled and cheered. With what some have viewed as shocking honesty, Maynard explores her coming of age in an alcoholic family, her mother's dream to mold her into a writer, her self-imposed exile from the world of her peers when she left Yale to live with Salinger, and her struggle to reclaim her sense of self in the crushing aftermath of his dismissal of her not long after her nineteenth birthday. A quarter of a century later—having become a writer, survived the end of her marriage and the deaths of her parents, and with an eighteen-year-old daughter of her own—Maynard pays a visit to the man who broke her heart. The story she tells—of the girl she was and the woman she became—is at once devastating, inspiring, and triumphant.

Book excerpt: This book is a survey of the life writings by and about Canadian missionaries at home and abroad, over the last one hundred and thirty years. A general missionary history of Canada appears first, to introduce separate chapters on the forms and themes of this body of literature. The critical problems presented by writing that has resisted modern and post-modern developments are discussed. Partial and fictional life writing, as well as marginal forms, are also explored. The book concludes with general statements about the whole of this literature and its effects. The first attempt at a comprehensive bibliography of Canadian missionary life writing is appended.
