Book The World of Prometheus

  • Author : Danielle S. Allen
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2009-01-10
  • ISBN : 1400824656
  • Pages : 465 pages

Download or read book The World of Prometheus written by Danielle S. Allen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Danielle Allen, punishment is more a window onto democratic Athens' fundamental values than simply a set of official practices. From imprisonment to stoning to refusal of burial, instances of punishment in ancient Athens fueled conversations among ordinary citizens and political and literary figures about the nature of justice. Re-creating in vivid detail the cultural context of this conversation, Allen shows that punishment gave the community an opportunity to establish a shining myth of harmony and cleanliness: that the city could be purified of anger and social struggle, and perfect order achieved. Each member of the city--including notably women and slaves--had a specific role to play in restoring equilibrium among punisher, punished, and society. The common view is that democratic legal processes moved away from the "emotional and personal" to the "rational and civic," but Allen shows that anger, honor, reciprocity, spectacle, and social memory constantly prevailed in Athenian law and politics. Allen draws upon oratory, tragedy, and philosophy to present the lively intellectual climate in which punishment was incurred, debated, and inflicted by Athenians. Broad in scope, this book is one of the first to offer both a full account of punishment in antiquity and an examination of the political stakes of democratic punishment. It will engage classicists, political theorists, legal historians, and anyone wishing to learn more about the relations between institutions and culture, normative ideas and daily events, punishment and democracy.

Book The First Russian Radical

Download or read book The First Russian Radical written by David Marshall Lang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this was originally published in 1959 it was the first full-length biography of Alexander Radishchev published outside Russia and was based on hitherto unpublished material, memoir literature and Radishchev’s own writings. Radishchev occupies a notable position in the history of European social thought, as the first writer to apply the criteria of the Western Age of Reason to conditions in Tsarist Russia. Sentenced to death on the orders of Catherine the Great and subsequently exiled in Siberia, Radishchev stands out as the first great figure of the Russian radical intelligentsia and the first literary victim of Tsarist official intolerance.

Download or read book Alexander Payne written by Julie Levinson and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1996, Alexander Payne (b. 1961) has made seven feature films and a short segment of an omnibus movie. Although his body of work is quantitatively small, it is qualitatively impressive. His movies have garnered numerous accolades and awards, including two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. As more than one interviewer in this volume points out, he maintains an impressive and unbroken winning streak. Payne's stories of human strivings and follies, alongside his mastery of the craft of filmmaking, mark him as a contemporary auteur of uncommon accomplishment. In this first compilation of his interviews, Payne reveals himself as a captivating conversationalist as well. The discussions collected here range from 1996, shortly after the release of his first film, Citizen Ruth, to the 2013 debut of his film, Nebraska. He also mentions the long process of bringing to fruition his most recent film, Downsizing. Over his career, he muses on many subjects including his own creative processes, his commitment to telling character-centered stories, and his abiding admiration for movies and directors from across decades of film history. Critics describe Payne as one of the few contemporary filmmakers who consistently manages to buck the current trend toward bombastic blockbusters. Like the 1970s director-driven cinema that he cherishes, his films are small-scale character studies that manage to maintain a delicate balance between sharp satire and genuine poignancy.

  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd
  • Release : 2017-03-14
  • ISBN : 1788037006
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Elizabeth William and Me written by S. Lynn Scott and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There was Elizabeth the First of England, in all her virginal glory, staring in complete astonishment at my fragrantly flushing lavatory and William Shakespeare, the writer, the genius, the bard of Stratford-upon-Avon, crumpled in sodden heap in my bath with a look of utter dejection that was positively comical.” S. Lynn Scott’s debut novel is a funny, moving and very original tale that takes the reader on a rollicking adventure through modern England – accompanied by the Virgin Queen and William Shakespeare. Ally is living an ordinary life until Elizabeth and William come to stay. Exactly why Elizabeth Tudor should choose her pantry to appear in, or why the Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon should show up later in her bath is a bit of a mystery, not to mention a dreadful inconvenience, but the crotchety Elizabeth has a mission and she is used to getting her own way. Ally too, needs to recover something that has been lost, and perhaps Elizabeth and William will be the means by which she will find it. Elizabeth, William... and Me takes a wry look at modern life through the eyes of two of history’s most famous personalities. Sometimes humorous, sometimes heart-breaking, the trio’s quest takes them from middle England to the cold streets of London, from a shelter for the homeless to the home of the very highest in the land; and from grief to acceptance. Drawing from S. Lynn Scott’s knowledge of Elizabethan England and her experience of directing Shakespeare productions, Elizabeth, William... and Me is an accessible and imaginative novel that will appeal to both fans and non-fans of Shakespeare, as well as readers who enjoy humorous fiction – with unexpected twists...
