Download or read book Esther s Notebooks written by Riad Sattouf and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Arab of the Future chronicles the hilarious and heartbreaking true life of a young girl growing up in Paris. "Funny, well-observed...contains immense daring and depth...Sattouf has drawn a portrait of a generation." —Observer, "Graphic Novel of the Month" Once a week for three years, the comic book artist Riad Sattouf had a chat with his friend’s outgoing young daughter, Esther, in which she told him about her family, her school, her friends, her hopes, her dreams, and her fears. After each meeting, he would create a one-page comic strip based on what she had said. Esther’s Notebooks gathers 156 of those strips, spanning Esther’s life from ages nine through twelve, giving us a delightful look into the daily dramas of this thoughtful, intelligent, and high-spirited girl. As The Guardian noted: “Each page of Esther’s Notebooks is self-contained—there’s usually a neat punchline—but read them all, and you come to see that Sattouf has drawn a portrait of a generation: their hopes, dreams and cultural references; the way that their personalities, backgrounds—many of the children portrayed have parents who are immigrants—and preconceived ideas about sexuality begin to play out even before they’ve begun secondary school. The result is a bit like a cartoon version of Michael Apted’s landmark TV series, Up. These funny, well-observed comics are fantastically daring.”
Download or read book The Notebooks of Capitain Coignet written by Captain Jean-Roch Coignet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notebooks of Captain Coignet (1776-1865) are possibly the most legendary account of the services of a young conscript and his experiences under Napoleon’s consulate and empire. Having distinguished himself at the battle of Montebello, and awarded an arme d’honneur, he is inducted into the famed Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard (having cheated the height restriction with the connivance of the normally strict Davout and four packs of playing cards in his stockings). Despite being illiterate until late into his adult life, due to his rough childhood as recounted in the first notebook, many famous personalities of the Empire are sketched in his honest style, although his own memory has somewhat embellished the facts. Prof. Jean Tulard refers to them as indispensible for understanding the mentality of the “grognard” or grumbler, the stalwart veterans of Napoleon’s Guard. This edition benefits from a preface by Lorédan Larchey (1831-1902) author of numerous French historical works, and over a hundred illustrations. Includes 101 illustrations and TOC

Download or read book The Stolen Notebooks written by SUSAN AUDREY GRUNDY and published by Susan Audrey Grundy. This book was released on 2019-09-29 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into reasons biographers assume Tuscan painter Leonardo da Vinci wrote the Notebooks, hunting down sources and original texts, South African art historian Susan Grundy uncovers it was only Leonardo’s young heir Milanese Francesco Melzi who said these were the artist's Notebooks. In the nineteenth century European scholars began to access these Notebooks in more depth, transcribing the arcane backwards Italian and translating them into English. They discovered a man who did not seem to be Tuscan Leoanrdo da Vinci, as he seemed to be a man from the East. Yet, this reality was closed down by researchers determined to continue with the myth of the self-educated genius from a farm in Tuscany.
Download or read book Kierkegaard s Journals and Notebooks Volume 4 written by Søren Kierkegaard and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, the Danish thinker Søren Kierkegaard (1813-55) has been at the center of a number of important discussions, concerning not only philosophy and theology, but also, more recently, fields such as social thought, psychology, and contemporary aesthetics, especially literary theory. Despite his relatively short life, Kierkegaard was an extraordinarily prolific writer, as attested to by the 26-volume Princeton University Press edition of all of his published writings. But Kierkegaard left behind nearly as much unpublished writing, most of which consists of what are called his "journals and notebooks." Kierkegaard has long been recognized as one of history's great journal keepers, but only rather small portions of his journals and notebooks are what we usually understand by the term "diaries." By far the greater part of Kierkegaard's journals and notebooks consists of reflections on a myriad of subjects--philosophical, religious, political, personal. Studying his journals and notebooks takes us into his workshop, where we can see his entire universe of thought. We can witness the genesis of his published works, to be sure--but we can also see whole galaxies of concepts, new insights, and fragments, large and small, of partially (or almost entirely) completed but unpublished works. Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks enables us to see the thinker in dialogue with his times and with himself. Volume 4 of this 11-volume series includes the first five of Kierkegaard's well-known "NB" journals, which contain, in addition to a great many reflections on his own life, a wealth of thoughts on theological matters, as well as on Kierkegaard's times, including political developments and the daily press. Kierkegaard wrote his journals in a two-column format, one for his initial entries and the second for the extensive marginal comments that he added later. This edition of the journals reproduces this format, includes several photographs of original manuscript pages, and contains extensive scholarly commentary on the various entries and on the history of the manuscripts being reproduced.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson's decision to quit the ministry, arrived at painfully during the summer and fall of 1832, was accompanied by illness so severe that he was forced to give up any immediate thought of a new career. Instead, in December, he embarked on a tour of Europe that was to take him to Italy, France, Scotland, and England. Within a year after his return in the fall in 1833, his health largely restored, he went to live in the town of Concord, his home from then on. The record of Emerson's ten months in Europe which makes up a large part of this book is unusually detailed and personal, actually a diary recording what Emerson saw and did as well as what he thought. He describes cities, scenes, and buildings that he found striking in one way or another and he gives impressions of the people he met. During his travels he made the acquaintance of Landor, of Lafayette, and of Carlyle, Wordsworth, and Coleridge, all of whom stimulated him. In Paris he was so much stirred by a visit to the Jardin des Plantes that he determined "to become a naturalist." On his return to America, still without a profession, he reverted in his journals to the more impersonal form they had taken in his days as a minister, focusing on his inner experiences rather than on external events. Notes start dotting the pages once again, this time not so much for future sermons--although for years he did a certain amount of occasional preaching as for the addresses of the public lecturer he would soon become. Through the thirty-four months covered by this volume, the journals continue to he the advancing record of Emerson's mind, demonstrating a growing maturity and firmness of style by compression and aphorism.
