Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Price was the best of what America has to offer: a hardworking and fun-loving Midwestern boy formed by faith, family, and farm-in that order. When his country called for warriors to fight the Global War On Terror, Dan answered and became the best of the best. As a United States Marine, he served as an elite special-forces operator, a MARSOC Raider, recognized by his peers as one of the finest they had ever seen. Where do these heroes come from? In No Stray Bullets, Gunnery Sergeant Price's mother Ruth tells the story of a church-going, homeschooled boy who went from the fields and barns of Michigan to fierce battles in the cities of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan. Along the way, he developed world-class physical, mental, and operational skills without ever losing the faith and values that were the source of his strength. When he came home, his whole hometown honored his heroism. Dan Price's courage and accomplishments were not products of mere chance, and neither was his death. Ruth Price celebrates her son's life, because in God's wisdom and providence, there are no stray bullets.

Book The Stray Bullet

Download or read book The Stray Bullet written by Jorge García-Robles and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William S. Burroughs arrived in Mexico City in 1949, having slipped out of New Orleans while awaiting trial on drug and weapons charges that would almost certainly have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence. Still uncertain about being a writer, he had left behind a series of failed business ventures—including a scheme to grow marijuana in Texas and sell it in New York—and an already long history of drug use and arrests. He would remain in Mexico for three years, a period that culminated in the defining incident of his life: Burroughs shot his common-law wife, Joan Vollmer, while playing William Tell with a loaded pistol. (He would be tried and convicted of murder in absentia after fleeing Mexico.) First published in 1995 in Mexico, where it received the Malcolm Lowry literary essay award, The Stray Bullet is an imaginative and riveting account of Burroughs’s formative experiences in Mexico, his fascination with Mexico City’s demimonde, his acquaintances and friendships there, and his contradictory attitudes toward the country and its culture. Mexico, Jorge García-Robles makes clear, was the place in which Burroughs embarked on his “fatal vocation as a writer.” Through meticulous research and interviews with those who knew Burroughs and his circle in Mexico City, García-Robles brilliantly portrays a time in Burroughs’s life that has been overshadowed by the tragedy of Joan Vollmer’s death. He re-creates the bohemian Roma neighborhood where Burroughs resided with Joan and their children, the streets of postwar Mexico City that Burroughs explored, and such infamous figures as Lola la Chata, queen of the city’s drug trade. This compelling book also offers a contribution by Burroughs himself—an evocative sketch of his shady Mexican attorney, Bernabé Jurado.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Re)Generation contains selected poetry by Anishinaabe writer Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm exploring a range of issues: from violence against Indigenous women and lands to Indigenous erotica and the joyous intimate encounters between bodies. From her earliest work in my heart is a stray bullet and Bloodriver Woman, through her spoken word works standing ground and A Constellation of Bones, Akiwenzie-Damm’s poetry demonstrates how to represent Indigenous peoples in their full complexity, especially as it pertains to bodily pleasure, love, and loss. Akiwenzie-Damm's afterword speaks to the relations and obligations Indigenous peoples have to one another and their other-than-human kin, as she reflects on the resilient work that Indigenous creative work has done and continues to do in spite of colonial violence. She stakes a claim for the necessity of poetry in the face of ongoing colonialism, not only in the present but in the future and for the generations to come. The introduction by Dallas Hunt locates Akiwenzie-Damm within the field of Indigenous literature and meditates on her influence on the field of Indigenous erotica. Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm writes in service of Indigenous brilliance, love, intimacy, and joy, and speaks with an unwavering voice, one that, to paraphrase Akiwenzie-Damm herself, “shakes the earth.”

The poet visits each leader, living or dead, with equal passion. His curious brush is delicate, ecstatic, melancholic or even celebratory depending on what image or circumstance he pans into view. Book The Joyous Patriot

  • Release : 1989-03-27
  • ISBN : 1473815649
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book The Joyous Patriot written by David Verney and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 1989-03-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Verney was born in 1879. His grandfather, Sir Harry Verne, had married as his second wife, Parthenope, Sister of Florence Nightingale, who was Ralph's Godmother. In 1900 he joined the Riffle Brigade and was sent to South Africa where the Boer War was then in progress. A dutiful son, he wrote regularly to his parents, describing every detail of his daily life. Fortunately these letters have survived and have now been edited for publication by Ralph's own son, David. Quite apart from the intrinsic interest of what the letters actually say, they have another rarer quality, in that they lay bare the standards by which a young man of aristocratic birth was then guided. Old-fashioned they may sound, but not a few still regret their passing. In 1907 Ralph became ADC to Lord Chelmsford, then Governor of Queensland, and two years later falls in love and marries Nita Walker, daughter of a distinguished Australian banker and politician. Now some of Nita's letters enliven the correspondence and soon a baby is on the way. So too is the First World War and Ralph finds himself back with his regiment in France, where he has what must, ironically, be regarded as the good fortune of the wounded. At the end of his first volume we leave him on the road to recovery and to India where he will shortly rejoin Lord Chelmsford.

Book Tracking the Bullet Saved My Child

Download or read book Tracking the Bullet Saved My Child written by Demetri Bell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up in the City of Chicago, attended Rezin Orr High School on the near northwest side of Chicago, graduated in 1980, and attended the College of Automation computer School. I have spent the majority of my life working with computers, which I deem to have been a very rewarding field as well as educational. During my twenty-nine-year tenure in the information technology field, I have seen the computer industry technology really skyrocket into a very sophisticated technology that have affected our lives in so many ways that we depend on computers to the point that it has become a way of life for us. You cant go to any major supermarket nowadays without the cash registers being computerized in some way, shape, or form. They even have check out lines where you dont even need a cashier to ring you up. You can do it yourself by scanning the barcode of your purchases and the computer will check the price through a computerized database and come back with the right price. The most fascinating thing about computers is the security mechanisms that have been put in place to help facilitate protection and control. Even homeland security depends on computers in protecting and saving lives to some degree or another. So it just makes sense to use computerized technology in other areas of our lives that not only enhance, but can also prevent a potential harmful element from ruining our lives. Computerized technology used in conjunction with controlling how a person uses his gun can save lives. And really, after everything else is failing isnt it time we came up with a winwinwin solution to todays problems? This is what this book will present. Solutions that solve problems.

Book At the Heart of it

Download or read book At the Heart of it written by Walt Harrington and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delving into the everyday lives of real, everyday people, Walt Harrington skillfully draws the reader into an intimate relationship with the men and women profiled in this powerful collection of stories--people like V. I. Smith, a homicide detective; Deane Guy, a stock car racer; Jackie Jordan, a social worker in family services; and Sheri D'Amato, a girls' soccer coach. Originally appearing in the Washington Post Magazine, these stories, which capture a cross section of Americans, stand out in the field of journalism because of the unique way in which Walt Harrington uses unheralded, individual lives to elaborate on the great human issues of the day. In "Mothers and Daughters" three generations of women discuss how society affected the choices they made and who they became. "The Mystery of Goodness" follows a Harvard-educated lawyer who handles death-row cases for very little money because he feels the system is unfair to African Americans. In "To Have and Have Not" a young couple with two small children struggle to make ends meet. Harrington describes in detail the creation of a poem by Rita Dove, then United States Poet Laureate, in "The Shape of Her Dreaming." Harrington has adeptly combined sociology and journalism into beautiful prose. As "literary journalism," the stories employ scene, dialogue, and physical description within a narrative framework. At the same time, they also adhere to all the traditional journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, and balance. As a result, At the Heart of It represents a subgenre that is rarely practiced and seldom understood even within the profession of journalism. All of these stories are snapshots, pieces of everyday life in America that are intended to be a mirror held to the lives of readers. These are not stories about which you can remain neutral; even the most casual readers will be moved by the glimpses Walt Harrington provides us of ourselves.
