Book excerpt: Austin Boyd’s vivid writing plunges you into Appalachia with such descriptive realism that you taste the perfume of summer clover and melt into the tender heart of a young woman who would sacrifice anything for Daddy. Hearkening to the myth of Pandora’s Box, Nobody’s Child sweeps you into a world where unprecedented choices never intended by heaven lead to unintended consequences never before seen on earth. Meet… Laura Ann McGehee—Determined to honor her father’s dying request, the young West Virginia woman will do whatever it takes to save the family farm, including using the one remaining financial resource she has—her body. Sophia McQuistion—Thanks to the unusual sacrifice of a woman she has never met, she carries the child she could never conceive. Ian Stewart—In Laura’s time of need, he’s more than just a close friend. He is a source of grace, a man who loves Laura Ann through her many trials. When unusual circumstances place Sophia’s baby in Laura Ann’s care, Laura Ann is now the virgin mother of her own biological son. The media call him “Nobody’s Child.” But somebody wants him badly enough to steal him. Weaving together bioethics and faith, Nobody’s Child dramatizes a future that is already upon us with consequences we can no longer avoid.

Book Reappraising Jane Duncan

Download or read book Reappraising Jane Duncan written by Rita Elizabeth Rippetoe and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-03-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish novelist Jane Duncan's semiautobiographical My Friends series was dismissed by postwar critics as lightweight, at a time when a coterie of "angry young men" monopolized the attention of the British publishing establishment. Yet deeper themes are at play in the 19 novels. Modern readers will recognize feminist motifs, a wide-ranging examination of women's education and work in the 20th century, a woman's view of the rising societal tensions of the 1920s and 1930s, and an outsider's perspective on the racial divide in the soon-to-be-independent West Indies. This book explores Duncan's body of work, out of print for decades, though sought by loyal fans. Her characters run the gamut--drunken tinkers, Lowland housewives, Irish miners, members of the London fast set and English marchionesses, all portrayed with telling detail. Her novels--two of them recently reprinted for a new generation--reveal a charming and perceptive recorder of the changes Great Britain underwent in the past century.

Book The Polar Adventures of a Rich American Dame

Download or read book The Polar Adventures of a Rich American Dame written by Joanna Kafarowski and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive biography of Louise Arner Boyd — the intrepid American socialite who reinvented herself as the leading female polar explorer of the twentieth century. Born in the late 1880s to a gritty mining magnate who made his millions in the California gold rush and a well-bred mother descended from one of New York’s distinguished families, society beauty Louise Arner Boyd was raised during a glittering era. After inheriting a staggering family fortune, she began leading a double life. She fell under the spell of the north in the late 1920s after a sailing excursion to the Arctic Ocean. Over the next three decades, she achieved international notoriety as a rugged and audacious polar explorer while maintaining her flamboyant lifestyle as a leading society woman. Yet despite organizing, financing, and directing seven daring Arctic expeditions between 1926 and 1955, she is virtually unknown today.

Book My Journey

Download or read book My Journey written by Elmer Dreyer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As I write this (2013), it is about one and a half years since Fran died and I moved into my present apartment. My life appears to be settled into somewhat of a routine nature. Each morning when I awaken, I go through a mental exercise of reminding myself of activities or events for that particular day....if this is Tuesday, after breakfast, pick up the recyclables in Hampton Square ; if its Wednesday, is this the Wednesday I print the semi-monthly news bulletin, The Pioneer, if it’s Thursday, I better get my butt in gear and get ready to deliver meals on wheels and print out a joke to read to the Thursday night Pinochle group.... Each new day is obviously different from any previous days, but there is a certain repetitive nature to them all. During the course of my unique journey from infancy to my now twilight years, I witnessed and/or experienced a plethora of events. In the preceding pages, I have written about a scant few of them and I know I have not even come close to covering many of the things that happened in my life. They are the result of thoughts that came into mind as I was writing and followed no specific pattern other than a rudimentary outline of the flow of my life.
