Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do kids come with an owner’s manual? This book is about Jim Minton’s journey of figuring out how to raise his kids and learning a lot about himself in the process. When Jim’s children were born, he focused on raising Division I athletes who would make him look good. He started off as that obnoxious dad we have all witnessed at sporting events. He ended up with thirteen principles for improving himself, plus three amazing kids who bring him great joy as they walk in the truth. Jim loves good quotes. He kept a list on the refrigerator as his kids grew up, many of them coming from legendary basketball coach John Wooden. Jim knew his kids were going to find the bad stuff on their phones and in the culture; it was up to him to get the good stuff in front of them. Along the way, Jim discovered that the Bible is the owner’s manual he was looking for.

Book excerpt: I think Suzanne has a great story and I am glad she's doing a book. —Liz Brody, contributing editor at O, The Oprah Magazine Hiding behind her smile, Suzanne portrayed a perfect marriage of love and honor rather than the distorted vows of deception, deceit, lies, cheating, and felonies. Suzanne, a broken-down housewife, shares a recollection of darkness behind the white picket fence, living a life of bondage to a controlling, abusive husband. Feeling she was a failure who could never escape the marriage of darkness. Through unbelievable, insurmountable challenges, an opportunity to reach for freedom presented itself. Download or read book Hearing the Other Side written by Diana C. Mutz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-13 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Religion and politics', as the old saying goes, 'should never be discussed in mixed company.'And yet fostering discussions that cross lines of political difference has long been a central concern of political theorists. More recently, it has also become a cause célèbre for pundits and civic-minded citizens wanting to improve the health of American democracy. But only recently have scholars begun empirical investigations of where and with what consequences people interact with those whose political views differ from their own. Hearing the Other Side examines this theme in the context of the contemporary United States. It is unique in its effort to link political theory with empirical research. Drawing on her empirical work, Mutz suggests that it is doubtful that an extremely activist political culture can also be a heavily deliberative one.

Download or read book Fifth Quarter written by Jennifer Allen and published by Random House. This book was released on 2000-09-19 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Allen was a top-ranked NFL coach throughout the sixties and seventies, coaching in turn the Chicago Bears, the Los Angeles Rams, and the Washington Redskins. Raised in a home dominated by her three football-obsessed older brothers and her father's relentless schedule, Jennifer Allen came of age in a cauldron of testosterone and win-at-all-costs mentality. Buffeted by the coach's tumultuous firings and hirings, the Allen family was periodically propelled to new teams in new cities. And while her French-Tunisian mother attempted to teach Jennifer proper feminine etiquette, the author dreamed of being the first female quarterback in the NFL. But as she grew up, she yearned mostly to be someone her father would notice. In a macho world where only foot-ball mattered, what could she strive for? Who could she become? Allen has written a poignant memoir of the father she tried so hard to know, about a family life that was willfully sacrificed to his endless fanatical pursuit of the Super Bowl. What emerges is a fascinating and singular behind-the-scenes look at professional football, and a memorable, bittersweet portrait of a father and his daughter, written in a fresh and perceptive voice.
