Download or read book October Cities written by Carlo Rotella and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Returning to his native Chicago after World War II, Nelson Algren found a city transformed. The flourishing industry, culture, and literature that had placed prewar Chicago at center stage in American life were entering a time of crisis. The middle class and economic opportunity were leaving the inner city, and Black Southerners arriving in Chicago found themselves increasingly estranged from the nation's economic and cultural resources. For Algren, Chicago was becoming "an October sort of city even in the spring," and as Carlo Rotella demonstrates, this metaphorical landscape of fall led Algren and others to forge a literary form that traced the American city's transformation. Narratives of decline, like the complementary narratives of black migration and inner-city life written by Claude Brown and Gwendolyn Brooks, became building blocks of the postindustrial urban literature. October Cities examines these narratives as they played out in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Manhattan. Through the work of Algren, Brown, Brooks, and other urban writers, Rotella explores the relationship of this new literature to the cities it draws upon for inspiration. The stories told are of neighborhoods and families molded by dramatic urban transformation on a grand scale with vast movements of capital and people, racial succession, and an intensely changing urban landscape.

Download or read book Understanding and Teaching Religion in US History written by Karen J. Johnson and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2024 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is deeply embedded in American history, and one cannot understand American history's broad dynamics without accounting for it. Without detailing the history of religions, teachers cannot properly explain key themes in US survey courses, such as politics, social dynamics, immigration and colonization, gender, race, or class. From early Native American beliefs and practices, to European explorations of the New World, to the most recent presidential elections, religion has been a significant feature of the American story. In Understanding and Teaching Religion in US History, a diverse group of eminent historians and history teachers provide a practical tool for teachers looking to improve history instruction at the upper-level secondary and undergraduate level. This book offers a breadth of voices and approaches to teaching this crucial part of US history. Religion can be a delicate topic, especially in public education, and many students and teachers bring strongly held views and identities to their understanding of the past. The editors and contributors aim to help the reader see religion in fresh ways, to present sources and perspectives that may be unfamiliar, and to suggest practical interventions in the classroom that teachers can use immediately.
Download or read book Law and the Epistemologies of the South written by Boaventura de Sousa Santos and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern state law excludes populations, peoples, and social groups by making them invisible, irrelevant, or dangerous. In this book, Boaventura de Sousa Santos offers a radical critique of the law and develops an innovative paradigm of socio-legal studies which is based on the historical experience of the Global South. He traces the history of modern law as an abyssal law, or a kind of law that is theoretically invisible yet implements profound exclusions in practice. This abyssal line has been the key procedure used by modern modes of domination – capitalism, colonialism, and patriarchy – to divide people into two groups, the metropolitan and the colonial, or the fully human and the sub-human. Crucially, de Sousa Santos rejects the decadent pessimism that claims that we are living through 'the end of history'. Instead, this book offers practical, hopeful alternatives to social exclusion and modern legal domination, aiming to make post-abyssal legal utopias a reality.
Download or read book Novel Concepts on Domination in Neutrosophic Incidence Graphs with Some Applications written by Siti Nurul Fitriah Mohamad and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In graph theory, the concept of domination is essen tial in a variety of domains. It has broad applications in diverse fields such as coding theory, computer net work models, and school bus routing and facility lo cation problems. If a fuzzy graph fails to obtain ac ceptable results, neutrosophic sets and neutrosophic graphs can be used to model uncertainty correlated with indeterminate and inconsistent information in ar bitrary real-world scenario. In this study, we consider the concept of domination as it relates to single-valued neutrosophic incidence graphs (SVNIGs). Given the importance of domination and its utilization in numer ous fields, we propose the application of dominating sets in SVNIG with valid edges. We present some rel evant definitions such as those of valid edges, cardi nality, and isolated vertices in SVNIG along with some examples. Furthermore, we also show a few signifi cant sets connected to the dominating set in an SVNIG such as independent and irredundant sets. We also in vestigate a relationship between the concepts of dom inating sets and domination numbers as well as irre dundant and independence sets in SVNIGs. Finally, a real-life deployment of domination in SVNIGsis inves tigated in relation to COVID-19 vaccination locations as a practical application.
