December 1, 2023 will be remembered for a film that not only created a storm at the box office but also sparked off an intense debate that shows no signs of dying down soon. ‘Animal’, the multi-lingual blockbuster, has received flak for normalizing misogyny and its controversial portrayal of gender dynamics. In Screen Shots, we talk to some prominent names from the Odia entertainment industry on the ongoing debate that has brought with it its own share of polarization and toxicity. Another issue that has become a matter of debate in recent days is that of paid menstrual leave for women. The issue has taken centre stage once again after Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani expressed her opposition to the concept on the grounds that it could lead to discrimination against women in the workforce. In City Beat, we reach out to people for their views on the subject

Download or read book My City Links December 2023 Issue written by My City Links and published by My City Links. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simple wedding ceremonies of yore have given way to ‘events’ that are as mind-boggling in their choice of themes as they are extravagant when it comes to the costs involved. And this begs the question… is it really necessary to go so over the top, often at the expense of traditions and at the risk of incurring wastage? Our Cover Story for this edition takes a long, hard look at this trend and tries to come up with some answers. For long decades, football struggled to find a place in the minds of India’s sports lovers, overshadowed as it was by the more glamorous and mass-appeal-generating game of cricket. This has changed, albeit slowly, in recent years with a new breed of footballers led by the iconic Sunil Chhetri trying to power Indian football to new heights. In City Sports, we take a look at some key factors responsible for this transformation, including the institutional support that is being provided by the government of Odisha. Winters in Odisha may not be as extreme as in some of India’s northern states but the season still brings with it its share of skin problems. In a special feature in City Health, we talk to experts to bring you some practical skincare tips to deal with this weather. Amid a long list of negatives and controversies, it is refreshing to see winds of positive change weep through the Odia entertainment industry, guided by some immensely talented artists from different disciplines. The section also features the latest series of Savdhaan India, a TV show based on real-life crime stories, which is being shot in Odisha with cast and crew from the state. Arjya Patnaik, who is spearheading this initiative, talks to us about what inspired her to bring the shoot to Odisha.

Naveen Patnaik, who governed the state as Chief Minister since 2000, saw his party – the Biju Janata Dal – lose its grip on power after 24 long years. His legacy, however, is set to endure, much like that of his father, the late Biju Patnaik. Our Cover Story tries to summarize the phenomenon that is Naveen Babu, as he is fondly addressed by many. Music is the universal language of mankind, famous American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote way back in 1835. This holds true even today, decades of evolution and experimentation notwithstanding. June 21 will be observed as World Music Day. In City Lights, we bring you a special feature on the music of Odisha, tracing its journey over the last few decades and how it is changing, thanks to the transformative effect of technology as well as social media. Encouraging the use of eco-friendly material may be a way out to deal with this challenge. Read all about it in City Green. While on the subject of a greener tomorrow, we also look at how cycling promotes the well-being not just of an individual but also the planet as a whole. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize. I AM MALALA is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. Book Who s Afraid of Christian Nationalism

Download or read book Who s Afraid of Christian Nationalism written by Mark David Hall and published by Fidelis Books. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2006, journalists, activists, and academics have produced a steady stream of books and articles warning of the dangers of Christian nationalism, which they define as “an ideology that idealizes and advocates for a fusion of American civic life with a particular type of Christian identity and culture” that “includes assumptions of nativism, white supremacy, patriarchy and heteronormativity, along with divine sanction for authoritarian control and militarism.” According to sociologists Andrew Whitehead and Samuel Perry, 51.9 percent of Americans fully or partially embrace this toxic ideology. These critics, Mark David Hall argues, greatly exaggerate the dangers of Christian nationalism. It does not, as they claim, pose an existential threat to American democracy or the Christian church in the United States. Who’s Afraid of Christian Nationalism offers a more reasonable definition, measure, and critique of this ideology. In doing so, it shines important light on a debate characterized by unfounded claims, rhetorical excesses, and fearmongering.

Book It Wasn t Roaring It Was Weeping

Download or read book It Wasn t Roaring It Was Weeping written by Lisa-Jo Baker and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An honest and lyrical coming-of-age memoir of growing up in South Africa at the height of apartheid, and an invitation to recognize and refuse to repeat the sins of our fathers—from the bestselling author of Never Unfriended “Heartfelt, emotionally charged reflections . . . [a] bracing memoir.”—Kirkus Review “Important. Riveting. Unforgettable . . . a profoundly captivating story that can profoundly change your own story.”—Ann Voskamp, New York Times bestselling author of WayMaker Born White in the heart of Zululand during the racial apartheid, Lisa-Jo Baker longed to write a new future for her children—a longing that set her on a journey to understand where she fit into a story of violence and faith, history and race. Before marriage and motherhood, she came to the United States to study to become a human rights advocate. When she naïvely walked right into America’s own turbulent racial landscape, Baker experienced the kind of painful awakening that is both individual and universal, personal and social. Yet years would go by before she traced this American trauma back to her own South African past. Baker was a teenager when her mother died of cancer, leaving her with her father. Though they shared a language of faith and justice, she often feared him, unaware that his fierce temper had deep roots in a family’s and a nation’s pain. Decades later, old wounds reopened when she found herself spiraling into a terrifying version of her father, screaming herself hoarse at her son. Only then did Baker realize that to go forward—to refuse to repeat the sins of our fathers—we must first go back. With a story that stretches from South Africa’s outback to Washington, D.C., It Wasn’t Roaring, It Was Weeping is a courageous look at inherited hurts and prejudices, and a hope-filled example for all who feel lost in life or worried that they’re too off course to make the necessary corrections. Baker’s story shows that it’s never too late to be free.

As the author witnesses firsthand, Jimmy exceeds even his father’s musical heights through raw talent and relentless dedication to his craft. Jimmy cements the Noone legacy, ensuring the nation remembers what sublime Jazz can be. Book Genetics and the Politics of Security

Download or read book Genetics and the Politics of Security written by Joëlle Vailly and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a social science perspective on the contemporary gaze on the body of the suspect, this book considers how definitions of criminality, offenses, individual rights, and the concepts of identity and difference have been altered by changes in the biological status of the human. Spurred by rapid developments in genetics and information technology, a number of countries, including France, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and the Netherlands, have considerably expanded their genetic databases used by the police and the criminal justice system. Whilst this makes it possible to compare DNA left at the scene of a crime with that of an individual known to the police, helping to identify individuals for the purposes of court proceedings, these innovations also raise a number of important questions, such as how the relationship between respect for the rights of individuals and the security of populations is discussed, as well as for how long this data should be retained. Genetic analysis also raises concerns related to phenotyping and “biogeographical origin” that could lead to the stigmatization of targeted groups. Offering a comprehensively argued view on how DNA acts not only as a tracker of suspicion but also as a marker of contemporary social developments, Genetics and the Politics of Security will appeal to students and scholars, judiciary personnel, lawyers, police officers, and people with an interest in criminology and the use of genetics in the criminal justice process.

Book When the Weight of the Paper

Download or read book When the Weight of the Paper written by Graham Hyslop and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This aviation/travel journal is an account of the author’s experiences in 59 years of travelling the globe. His half-Scottish roots may have something to do with his yearning for a desire to visit a number of cold-weather countries that many of us might stay away from, but might like to read about! There are some tropical visits and temperate ones too, but the latest tally has been 21 landings or take-offs within the Arctic Circle, and photos included in the book show Greenland, Iceland, Faroes, Svalbard (sometimes called Spitzbergen), The Falklands and Antarctica amongst others, but there are some in warmer temperature zones! Over those years of travel 124 separate trips have been made involving over 450 different flights. In the early years, many were propeller aircraft and then later jet transport but over that period 64 different types have been flown, and each is supported in the book by brief technical notes and a photo. The author’s work in airline operations and then later in the travel agency sector allowed him the opportunity to extensively travel the world and see these sights. Later in retirement, the travel bug has continued. Interspersed into the timeline of the book is the author’s autobiography of his time spent in the three countries he has lived in during his working life.
