Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My Charger's Name Was Pegasus: A Cavalryman in the OSS" begins before the war when Charlie was a member of a National Guard cavalry unit. In 1942 he enlisted at Fort Riley, where they were still training horse units. Two years later Charlie was recruited by the OSS. After training, Charlie shipped out in July 1944 for England. After training as a spy, in late 1944 he went to France in an OSS section attached to Seventh Army. The latter half of the book details his experiences recruiting locals as agents to perform intelligence missions, often going behind German lines. During one such mission, things go wrong and Charlie's actions result in his receiving a Silver Star. He was among those who went into Dachau after the camp was liberated. Charlie's job was to locate certain individuals among the prisoners who had been recruited by the OSS as spies and had fallen into enemy hands, and to get them back. Charlie's memoir covers two topics-cavalry and the OSS-that have seen little coverage in World War II memoirs. 13 photos. Merriam Press Military Autobiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Smith Surtees's notable novel, 'Ask Mamma'; or, The Richest Commoner In England, delicately weaves the narrative thread through the amorous escapades and tribulations of two generations within the Pringle family. An exquisite example of Victorian literary artistry, it mirrors the social tapestry of the era, rich with satirical undertones and incisive wit. The literary style of Surtees is well reflected in this work, as it embodies the author's unique blend of humor with a keen eye for social observation, underscored by a tapestry of dialogue that vividly echoes the colloquial speech of the time. The sociopolitical context of the mid-19th century serves as a silent interlocutor throughout the text, where the juxtaposition of wealth, class, and romantic endeavors intermingle with the perceptive delineation of English country life. Surtees, wielding his pen with the same dexterity as a master painter, was significantly influenced by his own experiences and observations of English society. His background in legal studies and journalism undoubtedly contributed to the precision and depth of his societal portraiture. With an insider's perspicacity, he captures the ethos of the affluent classes, while never straying far from the sports and the rural lifestyle that were his hallmark. 'Recommendation to readers: 'Ask Mamma' emerges as a compelling invitation to delve into a vibrant literary past, with Surtees as your erudite guide through the intricate labyrinths of Victorian mores and follies. The book is recommended for enthusiasts of classic literature with a penchant for societal narratives, laced with humor and historical insight. For those captivated by the exploration of family dynamics against the backdrop of a pivotal era in English history, this novel offers both entertainment and enlightenment, assuring its place on the shelf of timeless works that continue to resonate with contemporary readers.

Book The Cavalry Horse and His Pack

Download or read book The Cavalry Horse and His Pack written by Col. John J. Boniface and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is quite simply the most important book ever written in the English language by a military man on the subject of equestrian travel. It was designed to be used by the United States cavalry. Yet it differs from traditional manuals in that it has says nothing about drills and everything about horse journeys. If you want to learn how to properly pack and ride a horse over extremely long distances, then you are holding the cavalry man's sacred text in your hands. At the dawn of the 20th century experts were busy predicting the imminent demise of the horse. Mankind's most historically influential comrade would make way for the automobile, cynics said. Yet the young author of this remarkable volume disagreed with the critics. No machine of steam and steel, of cog or cam, no vapor-fed motor, no craft propelled by batteries or boilers would ever successfully displace the horse from our on-going needs, advised Boniface. Part text book, part history book and all inspiration, "The Cavalry Horse and His Pack" is the lasting tribute to the great horseman and talented writer who foresaw the day when horse travel would once again flourish and a book such as this one would be cherished by unforeseen generations of Long Riders, cavalry students and horse lovers.

Book Life of George Bent

Download or read book Life of George Bent written by George E. Hyde and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bent, the son of William Bent, one of the founders of Bent's Fort on the Arkansas near present La Junta, Colorado, and Owl Woman, a Cheyenne, began exchanging letters in 1905 with George E. Hyde of Omaha concerning life at the fort, his experiences with his Cheyenne kinsmen, and the events which finally led to the military suppression of the Indians on the southern Great Plains. This correspondence, which continued to the eve of Bent's death in 1918, is the source of the narrative here published, the narrator being Bent himself. Almost ninety years have elapsed since the day in 1930 when Mr. Hyde found it impossible to market the finished manuscript of the Bent life down to 1866. (The Depression had set in some months before.) He accordingly sold that portion of the manuscript to the Denver Public Library, retaining his working copy, which carries down to 1875. The account therefore embraces the most stirring period, not only of Bent's own life, but of life on the Plains and into the Rockies. It has never before been published. It is not often that an eyewitness of great events in the West tells his own story. But Bent's narrative, aside from the extent of its chronology (1826 to 1875), has very special significance as an inside view of Cheyenne life and action after the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, which cost so many of the lives of Bent's friends and relatives. It is hardly probable that we shall achieve a more authentic view of what happened, as the Cheyennes, Arapahos, and Sioux saw it.

Book Crack Hardy

Download or read book Crack Hardy written by Stephen Dando-Collins and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dando-Collins adroitly interweaves a compelling family history with the broader canvas of the Anzacs. Crack Hardy is a fine and important book. This is the true story of three Australian soldiers, the Searle brothers. One brother was killed at Gallipoli, another on the Western Front. One came home a decorated hero. Viv, a gifted poet who was planning to be a clergyman before the war, became a deadly efficient sniper. Ray shot himself and was charged with desertion. Ned was a true Australian larrikin, up for anything, and the black sheep of the family. The Searle boys had to crack hardy, as they fought in one grueling campaign after another - from the first wave of the Gallipoli landings to Lone Pine, from Ypres to Messines and Hill 60 in Flanders, to bloody Somme battles at Mouquet Farm, Bullecourt, and Hamel, with their brothers and mates falling all around them. Back home in an Australian country town, their mother, father, sisters and remaining brother also had to crack hardy, as the bad news from the front just kept coming, and coming. Told from the heart by the Searle brothers' great-nephew, award-winning author Stephen Dando-Collins using the letters and journals of the Searle brothers and remembrances of other family members, Crack Hardy is a compelling book that defines Australia and Australians during the making of our nation on the far-flung battlefields of the First World War.
