Book Chaos Theory in the Social Sciences

Download or read book Chaos Theory in the Social Sciences written by L. Douglas Kiel and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-11-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos Theory in the Social Sciences: Foundations and Applications offers the most recent thinking in applying the chaos paradigm to the social sciences. The book explores the methodological techniques--and their difficulties--for determining whether chaotic processes may in fact exist in a particular instance and examines implications of chaos theory when applied specifically to political science, economics, and sociology. The contributors to the book show that no single technique can be used to diagnose and describe all chaotic processes and identify the strengths and limitations of a variety of approaches. The essays in this volume consider the application of chaos theory to such diverse phenomena as public opinion, the behavior of states in the international arena, the development of rational economic expectations, and long waves. Contributors include Brian J. L. Berry, Thad Brown, Kenyon B. DeGreene, Dimitrios Dendrinos, Euel Elliott, David Harvey, L. Ted Jaditz, Douglas Kiel, Heja Kim, Michael McBurnett, Michael Reed, Diana Richards, J. Barkley Rosser, Jr., and Alvin M. Saperstein. L. Douglas Kiel and Euel W. Elliott are both Associate Professors of Government, Politics, and Political Economy, University of Texas at Dallas.

  • Author : Flavio Lorenzelli
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2003-09-02
  • ISBN : 0203214587
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book The Essence Of Chaos written by Flavio Lorenzelli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of chaotic systems has become a major scientific pursuit in recent years, shedding light on the apparently random behaviour observed in fields as diverse as climatology and mechanics. InThe Essence of Chaos Edward Lorenz, one of the founding fathers of Chaos and the originator of its seminal concept of the Butterfly Effect, presents his own landscape of our current understanding of the field. Lorenz presents everyday examples of chaotic behaviour, such as the toss of a coin, the pinball's path, the fall of a leaf, and explains in elementary mathematical strms how their essentially chaotic nature can be understood. His principal example involved the construction of a model of a board sliding down a ski slope. Through this model Lorenz illustrates chaotic phenomena and the related concepts of bifurcation and strange attractors. He also provides the context in which chaos can be related to the similarly emergent fields of nonlinearity, complexity and fractals. As an early pioneer of chaos, Lorenz also provides his own story of the human endeavour in developing this new field. He describes his initial encounters with chaos through his study of climate and introduces many of the personalities who contributed early breakthroughs. His seminal paper, "Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wing in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?" is published for the first time.

And now their possibilities are very much here. But are we ready to handle these advances? Films from the Future looks at twelve movies that take us on a journey through the worlds of biological and genetic manipulation, human enhancement, cyber technologies, and nanotechnology. Readers will gain a broader understanding of the complex relationship between science and society. Book Jurassic Park and Philosophy

Download or read book Jurassic Park and Philosophy written by Nicolas Michaud and published by Open Court. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-one philosophers join forces to investigate the implications of the Jurassic Park franchise for our lives, our values, and our future. Human beings live and thrive by modifying nature, but when do the risks of changing nature outweigh the likely benefits? If it’s true that “Life will find a way,” should we view any modified or newly reconstituted life as a hazard? The new scientific information we could gain by bringing back T. Rex or other dinosaurs is immense, including greater understanding of biology leading to immeasurable medical benefits, but should we choose to let sleeping dinosaurs lie? And if we do bring them back by reconstituting them from ancient DNA, are they really what they were, or is something missing? If life will find a way, then why isn’t the Dodo still around? How close are we, as a matter of fact, to achieving Jurassic Park? Are we really likely to see reconstituted dinosaurs or other ancient species in the near future? How do the different forces—human curiosity, profitability, and philanthropy—interact to determine what actually happens in such cases? What moral standards should be applied to those who try to bring back lost worlds? If velociraptors could talk, what would they tell us? The idea of bringing back the dead and the powerful is not limited to biological species. It also applies to bringing back old gods, old philosophies, old institutions, and old myths. If revived and once again let loose to walk the Earth, these too may turn out to be more dangerous than we bargained for.

Download or read book The Chaos Theory written by Anuvab Pal and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunita and Mukesh are friends. He's cynical, from Calcutta, cocky and well-read. She's clever, curious and amused by him. It's the 1960s, Delhi University. Fashionable movies play at the art deco cinemas, Nehruvian poshness is stylish, The Beatles are the rage. They meet over a quotation game involving William Shakespeare and whisky. They both realise there's something special here. They have burning questions, as young people do, about things literary, philosophical, existential, romantic. The answers lie in an endless set of conversations with Sunita over Scotch, Mukesh imagines. Till she thinks America will be the answer, and leaves for a PhD in her search. He follows her. What happens, over the next forty years, is a journey - to carry on that conversation. Across continents, campuses, decades, marriages and life. To find what it is they really want to say. Chaos Theory, as loosely defined in particle physics, talks of two particles that circle around each other but never connect, which exactly descibes Mukesh and Sunita's situation. Their uncertainties translate into an immigrant's story of intellectual survival. In this exploration of missed connections between the abstract theories of modern physics with the equally abstract emotions of an aging pair of irreverent professors, comic and tragic mix together in a search for comfort which remains, at best, ephemeral and fragile.

Download or read book Chaos Theory written by Matthew Vierling and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-06-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were six academic fugitives from prestigious universities and elite private academies--Connor, Petra, Russell, Octavia, Iain, and Taleah--ronin child prodigies and castaway geniuses too smart for the traditional higher educational system. For Connor Randall, it is the great intellectual challenge he has been seeking his entire life. But there are secrets."Why me? It was this question that made me certain that there had to be a secret plan. But long before then I noticed things that should have been kept hidden." In the beginning, there is an absence of turbulence. Underlying instabilities appear. Flaws in the system are revealed. The second law of thermodynamics law mandates that in closed systems, chaos always prevails. But even in light of this ultimate tendency, small salvations are available within the process. In the end, however, the entire system, finally overtaken by entropy, has to collapse, and the implications are catastrophic.
