Book Camp for Free

Download or read book Camp for Free written by John Soares and published by Get Outside Press. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated for 2023! Did you know that you can camp for free on much of America’s public lands? Boondocking/dispersed camping is growing rapidly in popularity as more and more people take to their vans, RVs, SUVs, trucks, and cars to explore the backroads of America’s forests and deserts in search of solitude and natural beauty. I Have a Lot of Experience Doing Dispersed Camping! I'm John Soares, a writer for businesses and nonprofits for over three decades, and also the author of four hiking guidebooks on Northern California. I've been doing dispersed camping for 30-plus years in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and other states. In this book I bring all my knowledge, experience, and research together to clearly explain everything you need to know to get out into nature on national forest and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands and find primo camping spots, while saving a ton of money in the process. This Book is Your Bible for Dispersed Camping and Boondocking Here’s what Camp for Free: Dispersed Camping & Boondocking on America’s Public Lands covers: -- In-depth discussion of the different types of federal and state lands where you can camp for free, including dispersed camping and boondocking on national forests, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, national monuments, and more -- Clear explanation of how to research the best areas to go dispersed camping and boondocking, and where to find the best advice on finding campsites -- Detailed guidelines that help you find excellent campsites once you’re out on dirt roads in the hills, forest, or desert – and what you need to do to not get lost! -- A list of the key characteristics of a good dispersed campsite, and how to make sure it’s a good fit for your specific needs -- How you can minimize your impact on the land, including applying Leave No Trace principles -- What you need to do to be as safe as possible when camping and exploring -- How to keep your dogs safe -- Advice on where to legally sleep along highways and in and near towns and cities -- A comprehensive list of everything you need to take with you to have a thoroughly enjoyable dispersed camping experience -- A clear definition of dispersed camping, and why I use it more than “boondocking,” which is more common among RV folks. I also define similar terms, such as free camping, primitive camping, dry camping, and wild camping. -- A comparison of dispersed camping with regular pay campgrounds, and why, despite the cost and potential noise and other hassles, it can occasionally be a good idea to stay in a campground. -- Discussion and ranking of the variety of vehicles you can use for dispersed camping: full-size vans, trucks with camper shells, minivans, RVs, travel trailers, cars, and motorcycles. Only have a regular car? No problem—you can still do this! The book includes 25 photos, plus maps showing the distribution of U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands across the United States. What This Book Is – and What It Is Not There are hundreds of thousands of places where you can legally boondock and do dispersed camping in the United States, so this is not a guidebook to specific places. Rather, it’s how-to manual that makes sure you know how to find the best dispersed camping and boondocking sites in the United States, and that you maximize your enjoyment and safety. My Website Has a Wealth of Boondocking/Dispersed Camping Resources In the introduction and throughout the book you'll see my website address. The website helps you find the best dispersed camping spots and get the most out of your dispersed camping experiences. It includes websites and apps that help you find specific campsites.

Book excerpt: For most girls, sleepaway camp is great fun. But for Amy Becker, it’s a nightmare. Amy, whose home life is in turmoil, is sent to Camp Takawanda for Girls for the first time as a teenager. Although Amy despises spending summers at home with her German-immigrant mother, who is unduly harsh with Amy’s autistic younger brother, Amy is less than thrilled about going away to camp. And her reluctance about camp is only the beginning. At Takawanda Amy finds herself subjected to a humiliating “initiation” and also to relentless bullying by Rory, the ringleader of the senior campers. As Amy struggles to stop the mean girls from tormenting her, she becomes more confident. But then her cousin reveals dark secrets about Amy’s mother’s past, setting in motion a tragic event that changes Amy and her family forever. Winner of the Forward National Literature Award and a book-of-the-month pick by the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (NY), Camp is an acutely sensitive and compelling novel that will resonate with a wide readership. Book Sobibor Death Camp

  • Author : Chris Webb
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-04-25
  • ISBN : 3838269667
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Sobibor Death Camp written by Chris Webb and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sobibor Death Camp was the second extermination camp built by the Nazis as part of the secretive Operation Reinhardt—with intent to carry out the mass murder of Polish Jewry. Following the construction of the extermination camp at Belzec in south-eastern Poland from November 1941 to March 1942, the Nazis planned a second extermination camp at Sobibor, and the third and deadliest camp was built near the remote village of Treblinka. Sobibor was similarly designed as the first camp in Belzec, it was regarded as an 'overflow' camp for Belzec. This account of the Nazis' remorseless and relentless production line of killing at the Sobibor death camp tells of one of the worst crimes in the history of mankind. Chris Webb's painstakingly researched volume ranges from the survivors and the victims to the SS men who carried out the atrocities. What makes this work special is the research which has been gathered on the survivors, who by good fortune, courage, and determination survived Sobibor and built new lives for themselves, new families, but bore the scars of this terrible place for all of their lives. Webb focuses on the victims and presents details of their lives which have been found and re-tells them to keep their memory alive, to show they are not forgotten. The cruel and barbaric murder process is described in great detail, as well as the confiscation of the valuables and possessions of the unfortunate Jews who crossed the threshold of this man-made hell. One cannot fail to be moved by the personal accounts of those who survived, their loved ones perished in this factory of death. The book covers the construction of the death camp, the physical layout of the camp, as remembered by both the Jewish inmates and the SS staff who served there, and the personal recollections that detail the day to day experiences of the prisoners and the SS. The courageous revolt by the prisoners on October 14, 1943 is re-told by the prisoners and the German SS, with detailed accounts of the revolt and its aftermath. The post-war fate of the perpetrators, or more precisely those that were brought to trial, and information regarding the more recent history of the site itself concludes this book. There is a large photographic section of rare and some unpublished photographs and documents from the author's private archive.

The end of sixth grade and the start of Camp Amelia can't come soon enough. But then the worst part of school, ex-best friend Maisy, shows up in Bea's safe place and ruins it all. Maisy lands in the same bunk as Bea and summer suddenly seems dire. Never having camped a day in her life, Maisy agrees: it's hopeless. She should be at home, spending time with her little sister and hanging out with her super popular crew of friends--not at this stupid adventure camp failing everything and being hated by everyone. In a desperate bid to belong, Maisy offers Bea a deal: if Bea helps her fit in at the camp, she will get Bea into the M & M's, their town's popular clique, when they enter seventh grade in the fall.
