Book My Book of Favourite Fairy Tales Illustrated by Jennie Harbour

Download or read book My Book of Favourite Fairy Tales Illustrated by Jennie Harbour written by Edric Vredenburg and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Book of Favourite Fairy Tales is a wonderful collection of classic fairy tales such as ‘Cinderella’, ‘Little Snow White’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Bluebeard’, ‘Thumbelina’, and ‘Beauty and the Beast’. These much-loved stories are accompanied by the magnificent colour and black-and-white illustrations of Jennie Harbour. The narratives were originally edited by Captain Edric Vredenburg, a noted British collector of folklore – and appear in his translation. Vredenburg was a military man as well as an editor at Raphael Tuck and Sons; notable publishers of short stories and fairy tales. They produced many exceptional volumes classic tales, retold for young audiences. Jennie Harbour (1893 – 1950) was an immensely talented and popular illustrator. Despite this, very little is known about her life. She managed to capture the public’s imagination with her delicate and ethereal illustrations. They most commonly featured subtle yet bold washes of colour, with few of the thick black outlines so common in other illustrations of the day. Vibrant colours and Art Deco patterns full of energy and emotion characterise Harbour’s work. The illustrations in My Book of Favourite Fairy Tales are presented alongside with the classic fairy tales – both aspects further refining and elucidating the other. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

It is a collection of classic children’s tales, compiled and edited by Dinah Craik, and illustrated by Warwick Goble. In the words of the author, it is intended as ‘the best collection attainable of that delight of all children, and of many grown people who retain the child-heart still – the old-fashioned, time-honoured classic Fairy Tale. It includes the narratives of ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and many more. Warwick Goble (1862 – 1943) was an illustrator of children’s books, who specialised in Japanese and Indian themes. The son of a commercial traveller, he was educated at the Westminster School of art, and specialised in chromolithographic printing. His work is delicate in its colouring, and masterful in its presentation of line and form. Some of Goble’s best known works include illustrations for Charles Kingsley’s The Water Babies, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside My Book of Favorite Fairy Tales: But the old king told him to go out again as usual the next day, and when morning came, the king placed himself behind the gate, and heard how she spoke to Falada, and how Falada answered; and then he went into the field and hid himself in a bush by the meadows side, and soon saw with his own eyes how they drove the flock of geese, and how, after a little time, she let down her hair that glittered in the sun; and then he heard her say- ...But when they had broken open the door they found no one within; and as they came back into the house, [pg 30] Cinderella lay as she always did, in her dirty frock by the ashes, and her dim little lamp burnt in the chimney; for she had run as quickly as she could through the pigeon-house and on to the hazel-tree, and had there taken off her beautiful clothes, and laid them beneath the tree, that the bird might carry them away, and had seated herself amid the ashes again in her little old frock. ...Then her kind friend the bird brought a dress still finer than the former ones, and slippers which were all of gold; so that when she [pg 32] came to the feast no one knew what to say for wonder at her beauty; and the kings son danced with her alone; and when any one else asked her to dance he said, This lady is my partner. ...But it is also said that the story ends in a different manner; for that one day, when Red Riding Hood was taking some presents to her grandmother, a Wolf met her, and wanted to mislead her; but she went straight on, and told her grandmother that she had met a Wolf, who said good-day; but he looked so hungrily out of his great eyes, as if he would have eaten her up had she not been on the high road. ...But as it still wanted three months to the Princesss fifteenth year, warned by the Fairy Tulip, who had taken Desir e under her special care, they refused to let him see their daughter or to let her yet marry the Prince Guerrier, but they showed her the Princes portrait, with which she was greatly pleased, and particularly when it said, Lovely Desir e, you cannot imagine how ardently I am waiting for you; come soon into our Court to make it beautiful by your presence.
